I just installed my new GTC 980 SC last night and powered it up without any problems.  The two ACX fans were not spinning but I assumed it was because the card had not heated up enough.  After 10-15 minutes of light usage (internet searching, TeamSpeak chatting, etc) I started getting some delay in response time - my mouse cursor was moving slowly across the screen and the TeamSpeak started breaking up.  Suddenly, the ACX fans blasted into action at what I assume was 100% power and the screen went dark.  I freaked out and did a manual shutdown.

After that, I discovered that even when I set my fans to come on immediately at 40% power in PrecisionX they would still not run unless I physically opened PrecisionX.  In other words, the fans would not spin until I opened the program.  Even then I still had the response delays.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the current GPU driver with no change.

Could it be that my PSU is insufficient?  Do I need to do something special in the BIOS?  Could it be a motherboard issue?  I'm not an expert in any of these things so any ideas of ways to troubleshoot that you all might have would be much appreciated!

Here are my PC specs:
- Fractal Design R4 case
- i7 4770k (base clock)
- ASUS Maximus IV Hero motherboard
- Corsair HX 750W power
- 2 Samsung SSDs (one for Windows 8.1 and other for games)
- 1 WD HDD
- 2 140mm intake fans in front, 2 140mm exhaust fans in top, 1 CoolerMaster Seidon 120mm fan/radiator intake in rear

Hmm odd...

I have a 700W PSU and I haven't experienced this. Although I am experiencing screen tearing in games for whatever reason. People have told me it's because the GTX 980 ramps up the power to 100% sometimes and that causes the screen tearing.

980 ACX 2.0 fans don't spin up until 60c.

Yes I understand that but I assumed they would have started spinning before the card overheated and shut down the first time, right?  And then once I set the fans to spin even at 0c in PrecisionX I assumed they would automatically kick on at startup, no?  Somethings not right...

They only start at 60C. And you likely saw the issue because the fan was set to manual mode in Precision or some other program, at 0C.

If this is the case the fans will not kick in until 85C.

Make sure fan mode set to Auto in PrecisionX, attach a screenshot if you can.

Correct. I would contact EVGA and ask them to e-mail you the latest vBIOS for the card. Updating the vBIOS on the card should correct the problem if there is something wrong with the vBIOS currently on the card.

Ya see on my monitor program even at idle usage, it showed my acx 980 using about 15% fan usage, i didnt think nothing of it till i found out there not suppose to be spinning untill 60C. I didnt look to see if the fans were spinning myself and no longer have 980 as it has been sold to snag a classy but will check again once i can get one.

So I moved my 980 to the second PCI Slot and it works like a dream.  You all really knocked it out of the park with this new series of cards.  I was getting 120 FPS on Battlefield 4 full ultra settings consistently on my BenQ 1920x1080 144 Hz monitor.  So it appears the issue was not with the card but with my primary PCI slot.....

Has anyone ever had an issue with a PCI slot not properly recognizing a graphics card or causing problems?  Last night I tried that slot again and I kept getting an error notice that there waas a problem with the 344.60 driver and that it was recovered.  But then it happened again and eventually I got the black screen.  I have the ASUS Maximus VI Hero and read that it could be a problem with the way my CPU is seated???  That not recognizing the PCI slot is a CPU problem?

Any ideas people have will be much appreciated! Thanks.

Try updating your motherboard BIOS to the latest version. If updating the BIOS doesn't correct the issue try doing a CMOS reset.

I will try that right away.  But shouldn't I have been able to simply swap video cards?  Shouldn't I just have been able to move from my 780 Classified to the 980 without doing any of that stuff?

Is it possible that my CPU is unseated?  Should I go through the whole process of removing the watercooling and reseating the CPU as well if the BIOS update and CMOS reset don't work?

Your CPU isn't unseated. If it was you wouldn't be making it into windows at all.

I have the same problem with my 970.
If I open any intensive game and forget to open precision my PC will just turn itself off.

This is really annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my Hero 7 MB.

Is this a problem with my card or is it something else?

I don't mean to dig up old posts.

B4 buying a MB you should search for IRQ in the manual. Why would they share this x16 IRQ with iGPU.. lol.
Check page 2-24 of your manual... can u plug I.G.FX (CPU iGPU) into a monitor and install intel graphics drivers and test?
You could try turning off multi-monitor support in the BIOS for iGPU as well... this will turn off the iGPU.. you only need it for things like TMPGEnc anyway.

Also PCIe2 will slow messages slightly and may remove stutter (if you have it). But it is worth trying to see if it fixes other problems. Change to PCIe2 and see if it works better... or swap slots maybe and try (but it says 8x for other slot and it is SATA IRQ as well, PCIe2 is better). page 3-32 of your manual

Sorry I downloaded 6 Hero manual, but just search for IRQ and then Gen3

Anyway I never use software overclocking tools, they never seem to work on factory overclocked cards... better off with BIOS modding or just be happy with the evga sc defaults as they use 180Watts (bang on the real TDP)

I do not have a evga 980 sc ACX2, but am thinking about getting one... just trying to work out if it has a problem first, lol.
