Hi,

I've been keeping my eye on the EVGA GTX 980 SUPERCLOCKED [Reference Cooler - P/N: 04G-P4-2982-KR] since launch to purchase in the coming few weeks, however now I noticed that Amazon and NewEgg show the card as 'no longer available' or 'discontinued'. Is this card truly discontinued? If so, May I know why?

I am not too keen on the ACX2.0 version as I like the design and function of the reference cooler [blower fan].

On Newegg, right now, 1:00 PM Central time, it shows the EVGA GTX 98 SC,  part number EVGA 04G-P4-2982-KR, is showing as 'Out of stock'.  (As are almost all of the 980's.)  Nothing about it being discotinued or no longer available.

Gigabyte TRX40 Aorus Pro WiFi Amd sTRX4 ATX MB, AMD Ryzen 9 Threadripper 3960x, EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 ULTRA HYBRID GAMING, 24G-P5-3988-KR, twin - 28" 3840 x 2160 Monitors, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, M2 NVME SSD for OS, 3x2 TB  Samsung 980 Pro SSD's for storage, Samsung SH-203 SATA DVD Drive, Coolermaster 1000 Watt PSU, Win 11 Pro, Coolermaster HAF 932 Advanced case. Then you've gotten some bad information, the cards are selling out as soon as they come in but it's not discontinued.

Thank you guys - I did see 'not available' on newegg and freaked out [not available usually only shows up on their discontinued products].

Also not to mention a lot of people having some little issue over another with the 980 SC Reference cards [Abnormal clock speeds, boot or screen recognition issues etc]. I thought maybe EVGA found a defect and swapped the card with their own ACX2.0 variant.

Glad to hear the card is still in production - and I dont worry about these problems people post... considering its selling like hot cake and it's a brand new card, we are bound to find some issue or the other... nothing that can't be fixed :)

I'm in the So Cal area...I have been checking daily this on Newegg and Frys. The one on Frys was totally removed... called them and they said it shows "discontinued"?! Checked at Newegg's site and it says "It may or may not be restocked"?!

Can we have some clear and open talk from the actual peeps from EVGA?

...exactly - You can not find the card with simple search in Amazon and if you do access the card - it says "We don't know when or if this card will be in stock".

I second the motion - we need someone from EVGA to clear this out...

Has the card been discontinued? If so, why?

BTW - Living in Pakistan, a retailer has the card for Rs77000 [$770] but i'm not willing to pay premium for it... also worried that these card may have a chronic issue now...

Well anyhoo.. I gave up on trying to get this one:

and just got this one:

I was lucky enough to find and purchase the ACX 2.0 version from Amazon just now and should receive it hopefully in two days with "Prime shipping". It is not as sleek looking as the reference design but two fans with the same 980 chip... let's hope its ideal for me. Just puzzled why its stronger than the stock version but yet it is cheaper than the weaker version. I made a thread about it.

Also looking at the EVGA website - the prices have been hiked up.

980 SC Reference shows for $619 and regular 980 Reference is for $599

The 980 SC was for $569 at launch...

This sucks... :( I dont want to go for ACX 2.0 - I haven't heard positive things about it...

Temps are horrible in SLI when two ACX cards are stacked on top of each other, even with a slot in between them they run hotter than reference style cards due to venting hot air into the case.

There is another thread where someone asked about this and a person from EVGA chimed in and said it's not true...the reference 980's are still in production.

I think that there might be more going on here... makes me nervous... I saw a semi ominous tweet from Jacob about the question and said "Not Exactly", but didn't say exactly if it was true or not.

I really hope its not, I am ready to upgrade my GPU to a pair of GTX 980 SC's (with Reference coolers) as soon as I can... if I can...

Primary System: Intel Core i7 3930K @ Stock ATM / 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz / Samsung 850 Pro 1TB / EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FE
Test Bench/Folding Rig: Intel Core i5 3570K / 16 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz / 1 Raptor 300GB + 1 TB WD Black / EVGA GeForce GTX 480 Superclocked (Or GTX 680 SC / GTX 770 SC / ???)

Im a NVIDIA enthusiast and welcome any questions.
Also if you cant find help feel free to send me a message, and I will do the best I can to help you.

I don't think they will let us Step-Up'ers down. No matter what I'm positive they will make it right.

Thanks for the information.  I have been to Fry's a few times and they just say it is discontinued.

It drives me nuts that they are saying this.  Funny enough they had 2 980 ACX 2.0 SC cards in store, however, they aren't even listed on the Web site.

Weird.. EVGA 900 series page.. right now the GTX-980 SC ACX 2.0 does not have auto-notify or buy button.. it has no button at all.

edit : it's been fixed now. Auto-notify button is back.

Re: GTX 980 SuperClocked Reference Cooler Discontinued? 2014/10/18 16:19:13 (permalink)
Im guessing EVGA probably cancelled all orders for 980 SC so they could apply the price hike.

The GTX 980 SC Reference Cooler card was being sold for $569 - and once the stock went out - they stopped supplying.

Now they've hiked up the price. The new shipment that will probably come after all pending orders are cancelled and the card will be re-shelfed as a new product with new price. Hence vendors claiming it to be 'discontinued'. It would probably show up on their shelves as a different item [i.e. different product code].

I'm just guessing here - but thats how it seems to me now.

A new model number would explain the discontinued status that some retailers are stating.
I wonder if that means the few 04G-P4-2982-KR models that were released will suddenly become a limited edition card.. :)   I have two of them. muahaha!

Could be right but as long as I'm locked in at the original price through the step-up program then I'll be happy.

^ Count yourself lucky. I wanted to step-up my wife's 970SC reference to a 980 reference fan model (which was available when I ordered the 970). I contacted EVGA and was advised they "have no plans to put the Titan-style cooler 980s back on the StepUp list" (but they did add that if you've already put in a request for one while they were on the list, then it will be processed as normal, so you're ok)... so I'm doing a step-up to a 980ACX instead, which I really do not want. :/

If I receive the ACX model and EVGA then put the reference model back on after telling me it wouldn't be, I will not be happy.

Yeah well the whole thing was a little lucky. I bought a 780 and almost 90 days later (just a few days before it was too late) I stumbled on the step-up list. The highest card available was a 780 Ti. I said, "what the hell" and started the step-up process. It was going to cost me almost $200 to get the Ti. Then just 2 days before my 90 days was up, I saw the 980's reference available. So I cancelled the Ti step-up and started one for the 980. But since the 980 was cheaper I only have to pay $60+ extra. A couple more days later the 980 ref was replaced with the ACX (I don't want that one either) and the new prices for the 780 had dropped over $100 everywhere. So really there was only a 3 or 4 day window where I could start a step-up request for a 980 ref and still get the full price for my 780 ($500) from EVGA.

So that is one of the reasons I'm not complaining about being in the queue for a month now...as long as I'm locked in to the product I want and at the price I want, I'll wait ;)

Nice timing, you'll like the 980 card. I have 2 x 980 SC ref cards in my rig - very happy with them so far.
