Hello,
the problem with my 980 SC is that I reach the Temperature Limit of 80°C very fast and the card won't run with the boost clock although the fan is only running at 50% under max. load.

After modifying the fan curve, i can easily fix the problem and get the performance i payed for.

But why do I have to do this manually?
Can we expect to get a BIOS fix so I don't have to run a custom fan control from a semi experienced user all the time?

I don't have this issue with my sli SCs but I do find that the default/factory fan curve is horribly conservative in favor of less noise. I made a slightly more aggressive profile that keeps the cards a bit cooler while also keeping noise down. 50% fans on these is about as much as i can handle while game sound is turned up. Any more than that and these things are like turbines. That said, out of curiosity what are your boost clocks with the SC? I'm seeing people reporting all kinds of different numbers from 1380 upwards of 1443 on factory clocks.

My card is going up to 1366 MHz, BUT when I don't use my custom fan curve this clock won't last for more than 30 seconds because the card is heating up to 80°C within a few seconds.
Consequently the card will throttle down to its standard clock, which is really annoying.

The default fan profile for 780/980 series is set for ~80C at which point the GPU will begin to throttle unless you use a custom fan profile. As this behavior is the default and well known, I would doubt they are going to change it. The GPU's are biased toward quiet fan operation. I personally would have preferred they set the fan to keep the GPU just under the throttle temp...but I don't see that happening.

Yea its not something that's going to be changed anytime soon. I'm using a custom fan profile here as well, 100% fan at 70*C, and it rarely gets to 70*C anyway. Personally unless the computer is in some type of recording environment where it needs to be quiet or it will mess with the recording, I don't get what the big deal is about sound. To each there own, I like my turbine it keep the faint of heart from getting to close.

Yea but I guess there is a difference between overclocked and non oc'ed cards.

I think the BIOS fan curve of the 980 SC is the same as the fan curve of the reference Nvidia 980.
The difference: The stock 980 will run much cooler and is able to stay below 80 degree celcius under full load with the default fan curve.

Under these circumstances the reference card can keep up its Boost clock and the EVGA SC can not.

The only way to fix this is modifying the fan curve which works fine with afterburner or precision.

Nevertheless I really really hope there is a BIOS fix coming from EVGA anytime soon.

Actually 60-65% Fan speed would be enough to keep the card around 77-78°C.
You can definitely hear a small difference in noise between 50% and 60% fan speed but is it worth losing around 100 MHz clock speed just because of that?

Since these gpu's are either constantly folding or similar, I like to keep them as cool as I can. I wouldn't feel to confortable running them near 80* 24/7.

That makes sense, for gaming purposes I wouldn't want to have the card running at 100% fan either.
