Hello,

Does anyone know why the first SLI connectors let the cards flickering if SLI is enabled? ( red lines, red flashing ).
But second SLI connectors working good, no problems and no flickering at all.

Never had this problem before with any cards.

And yes both cards are working perfect, i tested both alone and all running stable and good.
But first SLI connectors aren't working ( no fps drops, just red screen flickering )

I'm alone with this problem?
well is actually not a problem, because second SLI connectors working good, just want to know why this happen lul.

ps: my friend have two 980 SC ACX 2.0 as well, and have the same problem with the first SLI connectors.
He uses EVGA Pro SLI bridge, and i use standard SLI cable.

    hi,
it sounds like you touched the sli finger and transferred a finger print to it... your have to use 99% rubbing alcohol on it to clean it.

    Hello,

I am having same issue. Using first set of connector for 980 reference cards (Step up) in SLI, Games in full screen mode shows red flickerig screen!

Its frustrating but works perfect when using second set of connector :)

I have the red flickering too, only I have it with 3-way SLI. I can run 1 or two cards ok, but when I add the third it flickers red in games and benchmarks unless in windowed mode.

Same problem figured it out the card is bad.
My config PCIE 2.0 16x top and 8x bottom.

If i put that card with the problem in 8x 2.0 its fine but if i put as primary in 16x i get red flickering n SLI. My other card don't have this problem.
I held off in returning but just upgraded to x99 and parts will be in today and i know ill have the problem and wont be able to work around it running PCI 3 x16 and x8 since 8x is essentially 2.0 16x

Im kind of mad because my other card that dont have this problem. But now has other issues. Last night the DVI no longer works correctly. On boot to windows, driver update  I get no signal.
If I unplug for few sec plug back in and it works. Ive already trouble shot its Not driver or vBIOS issue I even loaded backup image of windows and no luck.

So do I RMA both cards at same time wait 2 weeks or send back individually. I got lucky this time around both have pretty much same ASIC same OC, TDP and temps i know im not going to be happy when i get replacements ASIC wise even more so if i send back individually appose to same time.

Just received and installed 2 GTX 980 SCs.   I have not seen what you describe, but will keep an eye out.

When you say first SLI connectors, do you mean the one near the back of the card?

    Hello,
I have 2 of the EVGA GTX 980 SC...My first set of them was RMA'd due to having bad SLI fingers on the far left side. I was not able to get Full Screen to work at in SLI, cards worked great in windowed mode. The replacements cards came and I installed them...same exact issue with the replacement cards, the far left SLI fingers only worked in Windowed Mode. In Full Screen I got the black Screen and the flickering when trying to open the program or game
The second set of fingers...the ones farthest right work great. I am able to use the same SLI bridge and gain Full Screen.

My friend brought his PC over to my house...he has 2 of the Asus STRIX GTX 980 cards...We placed my cards on his MSI board and his Asus cards on my Asus board. Both fingers on his STRIX cards worked flawlessly. I was able to obtain Full Screen on both SLI fingers. My EVGA Cards gave him the same issue I had on my board. Seems it may be EVGA design Problem or 4 cards in a row with bad SLI fingers. Bad thing is with the RMA process I am well over my 30 day return policy and seems I am now stuck with cards that only 1 set of fingers work on. I was and AM under the impression that on all SLI setups you should be able to use either sets of the SLI fingers. If I was ever to go 3 way SLI and needed both sides of fingers I can not with the current design.

Its probably only one of the cards has problem not both.

To find out use a flexible SLI cable to troubleshoot.
You know left is bad on at least one of the cards you need to find out what one.
Plug bridge in left on top card, and on right on bottom card. If you get no flicker then you know th problem is the bottom card.
If still happens then reverse and use left and on bottom and right on the top. If its fixed then its the top card if still happens then its both cards.

What ever the result is have them test in SLI before sending replacement make sure they test both side.

well, the GTX980 SC uses the nvidia PCB.
no clue why the first fingers are defective by a lot of peoples.

    might be a BIOS bug.
maybe three SLI works without any bug with the first SLI fingers.
can't test haven't a mainboard that supports three SLI

Sorry i was replying to rbullis

Its not a BIOS bug i tried new BIOS same problem and if it was an underlying issues in the BIOS it would effect all sc cards.
Also you wont be able to run TRI SLI because you need to populate all the fingers and once you populate the bad finger the problem happens.

funny i was just chatting with support and they asked for this post link and now you post this message please pretending to be a customer?

I already did contact support. And you denied that this BIOS exist, when it does. And keep giving me the run about how it wont fix anything and i said i don't care i would like to update to latest BIOS regardless and then just say well there are no new updates for your card.... EVGA support is a freakn joke that was the first and last time i ever do live chat.

First sorry for coming across the way I did, I was just kind of upset how support gave the run around. I am familiar with flashing vBIOS and thanks for emailing an even newer version it working fine not that i fixed flickering I just wanted the latest.

Thanks for posting link but it didn't fix flickering for me.

They actually cross shipped me a replacement few weeks back. But during the time i waited for it to arrived i looked into it more  and loosened the screw by the SLI connector and flicker seemed to go away. So I sent replacement back but it came back again but oh well its working fine on right side and no plans on running TRI SLI. Its still covered for 3 years so if i ever feel like RMA i will that's if they let me since they already sent me one.

Thanks, what an excellent suggestion.  That worked for me after hours of troubleshooting.  Seriously though, what a bunch of BS that one of my cards is defective.  Pisses me off, and over volt isn't working either.

Actually, that was only a temporary fix.  I was able to fix it permanently by switching out my power supply.  The power supply I was using was an OCZ ZX1250w, a single rail high efficiency PSU that has caused problems for me in the past with Nvidia cards for some unknown reason but has worked really well with AMD cards.  I switched back to my Cooler Master Real Power Pro 1250w which has proven to be an excellent PSU time and again over a period of 6 or 7 years.

    edit again
it's been a few days and everything is still working perfectly and I'm getting higher stable overclocks with this PSU

Currently the PM Team is looking into the cause of the issues, we apologize for the inconvenience.  Until the source of the issue is rooted out and resolved, please do as Chris had stated and please contact us at  or at 1-888-881-3842 option 1.

Has your team found the cause of these issues?  I suspect QC doesn't actually test the SLI connectors.

I purchased a third GTX 980 ACX 2.0 for Tri-SLI, and the first SLI port (the one closest to the end bracket) is faulty.  It produces a red flickering screen in all games when in SLI, same as OP.  When connected to the second SLI port on the card, it works fine, BUT I need both ports working for Tri-SLI.  I've wasted a whole day trying different SLI connectors with no solutions, until I came across this thread and found out it's a common issue.

3 and a half months later and still no trouble.  The power supply was clearly the issue for me, although, there's nothing wrong with that power supply.  I've used to to run SLI GTX 580s, 3 way SLI GTX 280s and X Fire 5970s.  It must be a problem with these cards.  All those cards utilize more power than these do, especially the 5970s.
