I need help making a decision, I need to choose a good GPU that can handle most game on high settings at 1080P. The two main contenders are the GTX 980 or the yet to come out air cooled R9 Fury X. I need help because this rig will be used for years on end.

Damm, ppl are rude sometimes. Okay, as it stands so far the AMD/ATI FuryX is better than a Vanilla 980 stand-alone. But it's not better than a 980Ti, at least with the latest beta drivers. If I were you I would go to the General Industry Forums about a Lot of Info on both GPU's

It really depends on how much money you want to spend, and what GPU maker you like more to. But it looks to me like ur an Nvidia fan. Me Neither side, but i like Nvidia more, I would just like some better bloody Competition.

Also, from Tomshardware.com they person said that the FuryX is better for 4K, then for 1440p Monitors, etc. As the 980ti's are.

EDIT: Okay, some places do have both the 980Ti and the FuryX neck and neck. I DO think the General Discussion Forums and the General Industry Forums can help with ur Decision. Like I was saying and another poster here said, the FuryX is best for 4K users probably.

That hbm memory on the fury x is amazing at 4k...to only have 4 gigs of VRAM to do what 6 and 12 gig cards to and even better....but as we see, it's downside is reduced performance on 1080/1440p.  At least with the current drivers so maybe it'll do better on those resolutions with better drivers.  We'll just have to wait and see.

For 1080p I think 980 is going to be better. If you look at current benchmarks, the Fury X has some seriously underwhelming performance at 1080p/1440p.  Air Cooled Fury is not Fury X, it is supposedly something less than that (7/8th 3500/4000 SP) but has the same TDP of 275W, which is concerning, because like Fury X it will probably not be much of an overclocker, especially on air.  Meanwhile, 980 is a legendary OCer.

For 1080p, i'd go for a 980 unless your planning to upgrade. For a 1440p that would depend on ur wallet for what kind of GPU from EVGA here. If 4K, i'd say do a Lot of Research.

A good question would be, what GPU are you trying to Upgrade from..........

Fury is just released. AMD has a track record of improving performance of just released cards. Plus Fury just looks damn cool!

If i would have to choose between a 980, 980ti or a fury X i would go for the 980ti (though i already got one anyway) but, now that i have seen benchmarks and reviews, especially the Review of Jayztwocents
Showing that the Fury X overclocked to 1128 mhz is slightly better than a 980classy or 980ti reference means that if the Fury is not overclocked its just as good if not slightly less than those nvidia cards.
So if you overclock the 980ti ref card you will be way better with that than with that fury x thing.

Just watch that video from Jay to the end.

What will AMD do to be competitive again or can they without being bought out by a mega company of some kind.

if you just want to play in 1080p you might even consider getting a highly overclocked 970.

I've always preferred Nvidia cards over ATI/AMD, however for only being a 4GB card, the Fury X, especially having a self contained water cooling system from the get go, is truly an awesome card, that I'd own in a heart beat. If you look at benchmarks, the more the resolution goes up, the closer the gap becomes on the Titan X & 980 Ti. But really comparing the Fury X to a standard 980, is not really a fair comparison, as the Fury X is also $150 more, landing in the 980 Ti range, in which most cases the 980 Ti in most tests comes out victorious. Then again, the Fury X is a very cool & unique card, i love it personally. One other option is to grab 2x GTX 970 and SLi them which will produce the best results in terms of performance, but it also has a the draw back of depending on games to actually have decent SLI support.

Overall though, if I had to TELL YOU what you were going to buy, I'd be the GTX 980 Ti without question. More VRAM & better all around performance then the Fury X, and no dependency on SLI support. Just an all around amazing card.

I would probably grab a Fury X for sure at this point. Running neck and neck with the 980's now in low resolution setups and really starts to shine at higher res' is already a great reason. Then you add that they are using the first driver released with the card so their will be some maturity and MORE gains to come for the drivers alone. Its effectiveness in high res gives you some future proofing too, which is always nice. Nvidia cant make a driver to save their lives at this point, it seems. It isn't a great overclocker but really I could live without that since your not buying the ability to overclock, your buying the card as is and anything beyond is gravy. IMO, If a card performs well enough stock you really don't need the overclocks anyway, since all that does is shorten its lifespan anyway. The only real issue I would consider would be what companys card to buy and who has the best warranty/ customer service record in case theirs any problems.

Yeah the fury in crossfire is faster than ti and titan x by a good amount. it wins in 4k performance at least.

Frame rate consistency is an issue on Fury X. Bear that in mind! It may average higher than the 980Ti and 980 in some tests but the lowest fps normally goes to the Fury X unfortunately.

Yeah it does have a low minimum frame rate for some reason, they 295x2 is that same way low minimum fps.
