It says you're not supposed to but yes you can....I did when i bricked one of the bios to fix it.

*I take no responsibility if it messes up your card*  :)

can someone help me? What am I doing wrong? I have a 980 KINGPIN (obviously) and I am using the air cooler. I cant seem to overclock this thing as much as i thought i would be able to. I cant get it over 1505MHz without it crashing. Its only getting to like 54c! its not getting hot by any means. My drivers are up to date, i don't know if my bios is updated, could that be a problem? or did i just lose the lottery :(

More info Mate;

Whats your PSU?

What are you doing when it crashes?

Are u on default voltage?

Does it crash with stock clocks?

Is your memory OC as well?

What are you using to overclock? Precision? Afterburner?   If it's precision try re-installing it.

Flick to another bios using switch on you card, not sure what happened to one of my bios's but it was crashing like hell, switched it to OC and it was fine.

Try adding a bit more voltage by flicking the two switches on rear which will give you 1.34 your card will handle it easily.

Keep away from such tools as the classified voltage tool and until you sort your issues, I just found with precision it can get quite erratic and buggy.

Dont' expect to much out of these cards on air, I'm only able to get 1533mhz game stable.

Vinces Air/Water bios actally works quite well too. ;)

If you look at the writing (tiny) around the lights there are 3...one light each for normal, OC, and LN2 bios....i think they are different colors too...green, yellow and red so you can just look at the color to see which bios you have the card on.

It is the most thought out card I've even seen...those lights, triple bios, the 2 extra power switches, the protection switches that can be turned on or off on the top of the card and the separate lighting effects and not to mention the internals.

I have another question, So now that i can overclock this thing, when I was running Unigine Heaven 4.0 @ 1600MHz, about half way through the screen went black. It was only black for about 4 seconds, then the bench completed. It didn't do anything like that in game. Is that a crash? or just a Unigine/Nvidia thing?

You can check in Administrative Tools > Event Viewer what happen in that moment.
Probably notice something computer, or application crash or worse scenario driver crash.

are the voltage switches the two on the upper right side of the backplate? They are labeled 1 and 2 on one side and ON on the other?

Yes, each switch adds 0.025V. Keep in mind that adding more voltage does not always make you'r overclock stable.

1580MHz is a good OC on stock voltage for this card. I would drop that down to 1550MHz or round about there for a gaming OC and call it a day, especially if you are on the stock air cooler.

Re: GTX 980 Kingpin Exclusive Preorder 2015/04/10 14:42:39 (permalink)
My guess would be, it was not 100% stable.

Just because it passed 1 or 2 games/benchmarks does not mean it will pass all of them at 1580MHz.

I can get much higher stable OC's running synthetic benchmark's vs running certain games. For instance I can run both of my card's ( SLI K|NGP|NS ) at +130 core +300 memory stock voltage and stable in games like BF4, SOM, and Crysis 3, but in WoW I have to lower the OC to +78 core +100 memory. I can reach Higher OC's with more voltage but I only do so for benchmark score's, not for gaming.

If your OC passes in some games and not others it's not 100% stable. Try 1550MHz for a few days on stock voltage and see if that is stable, if you get a black screen or a complete crash lower the clocks.

Work on the core clock first and leave the memory at stock until you find your stable core clock.

Or the ambient temps were low enough to allow it ..... variables are rough to account for.

I have 3 of the KP's (one on the way) and will be doing stock setup, then water and even Ln2 testing to see the differences. I will try to put up a review of the cards as I go into testing.

Running stock clocks should only cause minimal heat. Most people that run into serious heat issues are trying to overclock like they are running the card inside a freezer.

Hi Scarlet-tech,

Please let me know how your testing goes on air/water, I'm interested in how your air OC's transpose to water OC's as I'm in two minds about if I should put my KPE under water as it's quite an investment for a loop if card isn't going to perform.   Whats gaming stable max temps and volts would you expect to get out of your cards under water?

Reason I'm asking is I've done a quick bench on my card with fans @100% with 1.39v@1600Mhz and card does seem to run stable for a minute or two until temps hit around 60 degrees then it artifacts so it's imperative I'm going to able to hold temps at around 50 degrees in order to get decent clocks.

Hey guys,

If I'm not doing any LN2 benching or extreme overclocking, do I still need to plug in the 8pin + 8pin + 6pin power?

Thank you...

Only review I've been able to find, it's nice if like me, you still don't have the card.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kp3FuzyOxrA, wish we had some community reviews.

I guess everyone has already moved on to the Titan X, or looking forward to the 980Ti in mid-May, woe is me.

Re: GTX 980 Kingpin Exclusive Preorder 2015/05/11 04:32:36 (permalink)
Can anyone confirm if this graphics card works with the GeForce Experience GeForce GTX LED Visualizer (Geforce.com/whats-new/guides/geforce-experience-nvidia-geforce-gtx-led-visualizer-user-guide#1)? According to the comments on its page, the software is very buggy. So I just want to know if anyone here actually got it working. Basically I want to know if I can do something similar to any of the following before I buy it:

1) Youtube.com/watch?v=S8ioPcLVdcE -> Apparently the software works with EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclocked ACX 2.0.
2) Youtube.com/watch?v=b7cqkhW2O6Q -> The software also works with MSI GTX 970. I also verified via MSI's website that all of its GTX 960 / 970 / 980 already support various LED effects via its own software too.

Thanks for any help.

I don't trust geforce experience, as it has continuously been found to be a culprit behind issues. The leds work with Precision X 16, which I suggest sticking with for controlling the lights, since it is programmed to control all of the lights on the gpu. Except for the bios (green amber or red, depending on the bios) and the 5 voltage lights. Those are not able to be changed.

Yeah but according to the only video (Youtube.com/watch?v=pBS356osM88) I found so far that describes its settings, there are only:

Static ON
Static OFF
Demo1
Demo2
Demo3
Demo4
PCB Temp
GPU Temp
Power
Graphics

Here's what I really want to know:

Can I put all the LEDs as white (or blue), and have them flash / pulsate in a consistent manner?

The only video (Youtube.com/watch?v=7JQDemDnomU) I found so far that does something similar seems to do it randomly, and someone on this thread reported another similar incident in which it only happened a few times:

Vipergtspa
My coil whine is a good bit loader then the fans on this card, also I to noticed yesterday that my LED's flickered off for about 2 seconds then back on. This happened once while gaming and the other two times at the deck top.

I have not done a lot of OC'ing yet but with stock voltage I was able to pass fire strike and a few games with 1521MHz. Still not sure about this card only having an ASIC of 69% and doing well going any higher with OC'ing on air.
