I have a few questions:
  • Is the GTX 980 Hydro a reference or classified board?
  • Apart from the obvious of water vs air cooling, are there any significant differences between the hydro and classified?

980 hdro is reference design. The classified is non reference and has better VRM and binned chips. There are a few other details, but it ends up if you are OCing the classified is better. Some argue that withput ln2 or liquid cooling the full potential of the classified is never reached. It is unusual they dont have a 980 classified hydro though.

Doesn't the Classy also have dual bios and the HC doesn't?  They're both spec'd the same so if you did classy HC, not sure how much more you could squeeze out of the card.

Main rig: i7 4820, Water cooled, 1000HX, eVGA x58 Classy 3, 16 GBs Corsair Dominato, eVGA GTX 980HC
    24/7 folding rig: i7 2600K OC'd to 4.5 GHz, Armageddon cooler, eVGA P67 FTW, 8GB Corsair Vengence 1600. eVGA GTX 580 HC2, PSU 750TX

The classy has triple bios. I believe a 980 classy hydro would probably have 1400 mhz as a clock.

Yep, and all my fishing gear is ready to go.
Sad news is the Power Steering went out on our boat.

Better fix that steering before the new cards get here otherwise it may be a while because you will be playing with the twins :)

So it would be better to get the classified and wait for ekwb to release a waterblock for it?

The Classified is a Beefier Card -- it has a better power delivery system and also comes with 3 bios's which is nice.

EK will be releasing a block before years end. I would guess about a week before Christmas but by years end for sure according to EK.

Either card will be nice so it's really up to you.

Do you OC a lot or do gaming or both?

The marketplace here at the EVGA forums I'm sure would take them off your hands for you.
