Hi there, i have just bought a gtx 980 and every single time i try to play guild wars 2 i get the blue screen of death after about 5 minutes of play, i have run memtest86 on all my corsair vengeance 4gb 1600 ram sticks and they are all fine, i have a brand new corsair cs850m psu, a 3770k i7 cooled by a H100i that checks out as running smooth as a babys but, all my temps are fine my drivers for my mobo and everything else are all up to date, what i cant understand is i can play a game like assassins creed unity or watch dogs maxed out for hours at a time and no problems what so ever but upon actually playing guild wars 2 a guaranteed BSOD ???, sorry lol just had to edit and add this, my machine works sweet as a nut with my gtx 670, its only when i put the 980 in that this happens.

Have you tried using several older graphics driver sets to see if you experience the same issue with them?

its a fresh install with all drivers done from the manufacturers of my parts so i have all the newest ones all on there, game was only downloaded yesterday from their client so it should be up to date, ive tried everything, and it seemed pointless to go for older drivers as i have read forum after forum on the same problem thats been happening to other people for months.

It might help if you shared the error code (BCC Code) you get with your BSOD...

It would also be helpful if you posted a link to the entire .dmp file for download so we could take a look at it.

The .dmp file should be located at C:\Windows\Minidump. Upload the file to a website like mediafire.com then paste the link here into this thread once it's uploaded. You will need to put spaces in your link to get it to show up on the forum since you don't have enough posts to properly post links.

Re: GTX 980 FTW (BSOD) help please 2015/02/25 13:20:13 (permalink)
You got a BSOD of 0x116...

    BSOD 0x116 & 0x117 causes:

#1 Bad video driver or corrupt video driver.
    #2 Defective video card.
#3 Insufficient power to GPU, defective PSU.

     Solutions to the above problems:

#1 Preform a clean installation of the latest video drivers...
    1. Uninstall Precision X/Afterburner if installed, make sure to select "no" to saving profiles if asked.  Reboot the PC now if you had to uninstall PX or Afterburner.
    2. Download & save graphics driver 347.52 to your desktop. Run the graphics installer located on your desktop once the download is complete.
    3. Select custom advanced install, under custom installation options uncheck all options except the physx system software, if you have a 3D capable monitor and would like to use 3D at some point please select both 3D options, check mark perform clean install, then click next to install the driver, reboot when asked.
Option 2: Test all older video drivers to see if they produce the same BSOD.

#2 Test the video card in another computer to see if you can replicate the BSOD. Option 2: Use a known working video card in your system to see if you can replicate the BSOD. Option 3: Take the defective video card to a local computer repair shop to have it tested. Option 4: RMA the card.

#3 Check and make sure the PSU PCI-E power cable is tightly secure to the GPU & PSU. Option 2: Check and make sure the PSU is putting out the correct voltage to the GPU while under load. A multimeter is required for checking the voltage of the PSU while under load, voltage to the GPU must be within ATX spec. Option 3: RMA the PSU.

But surely if it was my psu it would do it when im playing my other games, watch dogs makes my gpu work alot harder than guild wars 2, its also only 2 weeks old, and yeah with my other card in, my 670 ftw, it works fine, ive already done all the steps above in step 1, as for step 2 i have stress tested the card with valley, heaven and 3dmark all maxed full tesselation and aa and it was fine, ty for the help though guys i had no idea how to read all the stuff in the file.

You should try setting the cards core & memory clock to -105 using msi afterburner then try playing gw2 to see if the same bsod occurs while running the card at reduced clocks. If no bsod occurs while running the card at reduces clocks the card is faulty and needs to be RMA'd. I would recommend testing several older graphics driver sets first before trying to reduce the clocks as the newest graphics driver may not be playing well with gw2.

You'll be fine, it won't mess up the settings. Core & Mem clock should both be set to -105.

Mate thankyou so much for your help, after all the testing and such that ive done every piece one by one running various tests and nothing showing up it turned out to be one of my ram sticks lol, i tested it for hours on memtest86 and no errors but the test must of been missing that tiny little bit of it that was faulty, thanks so much for takin time out to look at my files and stuff though, much appreciated :)

I did as you said with the clocks Sajin and the game is now stable ive been on it for hours with no crash, could this be the card or just the **** optimisation of the game?

Can someone explain to me in detail exactly what the fault could be with the gpu, obviously its something to do with the clocks when im playing guild wars 2 and that they have to be underclocked for it not to BSOD me, but why is the card working beautifly on all other games if it is indeed faulty. i have seen on other threads that there is a big warning to all guild wars 2 players not to overclock or it will crash, but since my card is a FTW edition at a slightly higher clock speed would it not just react the same as if id overclocked it and crash me anyway????

If your card works fine at stock factory clocks in all games except the one you mentioned, then it's just that game causing your issue.

if you get what i mean i can deal with having to turn the clocks down for that game, but in the long run dident want to get stuck with a card that may be faulty, ive ran heaven, valley and a 5 minute maxed out furmark and it sailed through it. but yeah it is just that one bloody game that BSOD's me, after the clocks are down its fine.

Sounds to me like you now know what the issue is (was), just that one game.  Sounds like your GPU is good to go...
