I've had my 980 for a week now and am quite happy with it, but I've been getting "driver has stopped responding and recovered" error while playing one of my games. So far I've played modded Skyrim, Strife, WoW, and Heroes of the Storm with no problems but recently while playing Dragon Age Origins I've been getting this crash; it seems to happen when I'm playing the game and I have a stream or some other video on my second monitor and it occurs usually after about 30 minutes. Running the game by itself seems to be fine but I like to multitask and usually watch something while I play. Running PrecisionX the temp showed around 40-50c while playing DAO, around 70 with Skyrim, so I don't think it's a heating issue.

I'm curious if this is a problem with the driver, the fact that it's an older game, the card itself, or something else (like the PSU). So far I've tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling, and I've tried the 344.16 and 344.11 versions but they both present the same problem. I'd like to get an idea of what the cause is before I start RMAing the card.

My specs:
Win 7 64 bit
i5 2500k 3.30GHz
16GB RAM
ASUS P8Z68-V LX motherboard
GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0
Ultra 750w PSU

if you're running precision x 16, try msi afterburner or precision x 4.2.1 (or something other than x 16).  see if that helps at all - many people, myself included, are having issues with x 16.

    i7-960 LGA1366  / MSI X58A-GD45 / 6GB RAM / SLI evga 560 Ti Crysis 2 Maximum Graphics Edition / 750W PSU / Viewsonic 27" VX2739WM @ 1920x1080 / 3TB across 2 spinning WDCblack drives / some 140mm fans, a couple 200mm / all stuffed in a CM HAF 912 chassis.  And chicken.

Thanks for the advice, I went ahead and gave msi afterburner a try. Unfortunately while I like the program that did not solve my issue.

Update: Had another problem happen for the first time just now. I was watching a twitch stream and browsing the web when the screen froze, the audio became slowed down and robotic sounding, and then finally stopped. I was forced to turn the computer off manually. I wasn't playing any games or doing anything else when it happened either.

This is my first high end graphics card I've purchased so I'm pretty new at this, but it's seeming more and more like there may be something wrong with the card. I could really use someone more experienced to chime in and give their input on the matter. I'm a little nervous now if my computer can even handle the card or not, it was just barely able to fit into my case.

Welcome to the Nvdia Driver Crash and successfully recovered club.  I've filed a bug report with Nvdia about a specific PhysX  > GPU will 100% crash the display driver and Setting PhysX to CPU (off the graphics card) or uninstalling PhysX completely will resolve this specific crash.

I know this doesnt seem to be your problem, but rest assured, there are many issues with the hardware / software drivers for some of these cards.   I'll be returning my 980 SC next week either refund or a replacement; if no replacement Card is available, then I'll then wait out this mess and sit on my cash.  What a pain this has been.
