No, they just haven't been able to keep up with demand. So, more than likely, someone meant they don't know when they will be back in Stock.

They didn't stop making 780 classifieds when the 780ti Classified came out.

Now we  just need some full cover waterblocks.

I already have two ordered and now I have two 980 classifieds ordered as well from EVGA
P/N: 04G-P4-3988-KR , so I am concerned about what type of change was made.
 
Some clarification as to what changed on the VRAM would be appreciated.
 
Lastly, will this card (P/N: 04G-P4-3988-KR) be added to the free game promotion?

This is quite interesting - so when you say 'both are compatible with SLI', do you mean that I can use the 'older' card (2988) with this new one (3988) and SLI them and it should work without issue?
 
How would the different BIOS on each card affect OC'ing ability and stability in general?
 
Anyway, are these 'new' versions going to be available on Amazon or TigerDirect?
 
I want to get two, but I'm apprehensive since I have this nagging feeling that some new but yet unannounced card is around the corner - a la GTX-980 Ti or the new Titan X (or Titan II) w/ 8GB VRAM.

From what I understand, it was just simply a component change.  Probably due to more availability of the VRM components on the newer P/N, but don't quote me on that.  For that, the card would need a different BIOS, reflecting the different VRM components.  The cards will still work perfectly fine in SLI, but you don't want to flash one BIOS to the other, as there will probably be an issue due to a component mis-match.  Any difference in overclocking would likely be just the same differences you would normally have between cards - quality of the chips.  The new P/N is not expected to be better or worse for overclocking; as stated, performance and OC remain identical.
 
As for hints, Jacob won't really say anything until Nvidia officially announces new products.

Just ordered the Classified GTX 980 P4-3988-KR (showed up on EVGA and Newegg's website a few minutes ago), my 1st one was a P4-2988-KR, EVGA support swears the two will play nice in SLI, I forgot to ask if the fancy SLI bridges that light up nice will work on these new cards as they are not listed as compatible on the EVGA website.

Sli bridges do light up, but thats all, no other control options work / at this time

As long as they work and light up, it's all good. Newegg is already out of these cards, wow.
