I'm reading on Videocardz.com that AMD is planning to launch beefed up R9 290x cards with 8gb VRAM to combat the new GTX 980.

An interesting comment at the bottom of the article is that Nvidia is also planning to beef up GTX 980 to 8gb to counteract this move.

Is this even possible? 290x has a 512 bus and the 980 only has 256 bus

Or do you think it could have anything to do with GM200? I've been watching gamedebate and their prediction for the 980 Ti and the Titan X, both having predicted 8gb VRAM

I would believe videocardz waaaay before gamedebate personally, but this news and speculation is fascinating

I still can't post links...what gives? And sorry, I didn't see the other topic already made. I'm having a really bad day

You haven't been around these parts long enough to post links.. (reread that in an old western movie country accent.)

We will see. There is plenty of thread about the vram all over the forums, and plenty that have been running since launch day. One could hope they make higher density vram cards, but speculation is only speculation at this point.

Hehe, thanks, that first part made me smile.

I really like rumor mills when it comes to GPU's. It gets exciting. I'm just wondering what in the world the average consumer would need that much VRAM for. The only games that are going off the charts currently for ram usage are console ports. Perhaps these GPU manufacturers know something about the next evolution of PC gaming that we don't.

But this seems so quick to upgrade to double the vram for a new card. Didn't it take a really long time for the 780's to upgrade?

The 780s upgraded back in... March... I think it was.

I like reading about the rumors too. I just have a hard time following 7-8 threads and try to encourage cramming them together, lol. As far as the usage of that amount of Ram, who knows. They may go crazy simply because of having that out of vram to work with.. It's like having the capability of 128gb of DDR4 on the x99... I am sure someone will figure out how to tax that, but not this guy, lol.

I'm sorry for people who bought last years cards with 2GB.
Example GTX770. That was not fair from NVIDIA side.
GTX770 should came with 4GB reference and NVIDIA knew what will happen with games.
Even our 3GB is on edge literally, with 2GB they can play some games on medium settings.
But whole that series was mistake and from performance side and from video memory side, and GTX770 and GTX780 and AMD destroy them with price and with performance. NVIDIA than launch better card but some people are collateral damage and they pay 400-450e for GTX770 2GB.
One year later GTX780Ti cost same price on Newegg.
AMD think smarter, they launch both model with 4GB, R9-290 and R9-290X and leave space for 1-2 models with 8GB just in case.
With 3GB we are safe for now, just to avoid grey unchangeable options in games.

I understand, sorry for duplicating old news. I should really use the search bar before posting threads x~x

I think this move is honestly just to see who can dominate at highest consumer resolution. Green team still has no answer for 295x2

No answer from side of dual card because Titan Z is not answer, that's mirror of NVIDIA company.
They drop price in moment when GTX980 SLI is 20% stronger than Titan Z.
Duplicate of their politic, weaker and more expensive. But NVIDIA have answer from same money.
That's two GTX980 in SLI are better than R9-295X 20% and use almost half less power.
R9-295X have and hidden problems, they should make better reference board and VRM, problems with drivers,
some games not recognize second chip and must used Mantle instead DirectX, somewhere and that not help. They will fix that 2020.
Card have some terrible long tubes and I can bet gaming is nightmare in games made with PhysX from lag side and micro stuttering even with PhysX disabled from other side NVIDIA much better deal with games made from AMD.
AMD didn't make nice dual card after ATI 5970. That was really monster, I didn't have money in that time because of that I bought HD5870 2GB but I tried Crysis that was same as one card.

I have noticed this kind of trend too Vlad, which is why I am just not impressed with the current 900 launch. We all know Nvidia is holding back.

ANY current card will be like taking a rocket to the moon for me, over my APU in my system, but I'm waiting. I have the money and I want a card that will last me till Pascal hits. GM204 just isn't enough.

    So sli 980's are better than 295x? Sometimes I have a hard time understanding your posts Vlad, i'm sorry ;w;

I don't find the search bar to always be helpful to be honest. It pulls really random threads, with the content of the thread rather than the title of the thread.

It's ok. I got my point across. That's the only thing I wanted to do. Once too many of these pop up, I'll start locking as duplicates. The thread can continue.           =)

Miko, another Just popped up just before XRays last post, as you can see.  It happens all the time, so it isn't much to worry about at the same time.
