Dear all,
on Thrusday I bought GTX970. I am loving it so far, but one thing dusturbes me. Sometimes it makes whistling noises and jumps to 99% usage of GPU, for instance in game menus and on low fan speed (cca 5%) it makes kinda cricket noises.
I've seen another topic with similar trouble, so is it ok? It is not that bad, but my case is on the table so I can hear it a lot.
Btw. I ordered SC edition and on the box was FTW, is there a way how to say what edition is the card?

Thank you for your further replies.
Best Regards,
DZimmy

I am rather okay with world of coil whine. World of coil exploding would be worst.
So I guess it is okay?

If it is just a little coil whine that is OK but if you suspect too much coil whine contact EVGA tech support.

It's technically sound, whether you find it acceptable i can't comment upon. However my coil whine gone the way of the wind after running several heavy benchmarks for a longer period of time. Wasn't a deliberate attempt on my part but it's a nice side-effect. I believe EVGA recommends something similar.

Thank you for your repies, guess I will have to get used to it. I will try to run some benchmarks later on.
Btw. what are ok temperatures for this GPU? I was playing Alien Isolation and max temp is 73°C, fan tachometer is max 1282RPM, and usage is pretty much all the time 99%?
Is that ok? Any idea how to find out which edition do I actually have? Apart from looking at the box.

Your GPU usage should normally be high if its a demanding game.

The coil whine will only happen in menu's and things like that where the fps goes to like 200 fps since there is almost nothing to draw. If you enable V-Sync the coil whine will go away for good but I find in lots of games v-sync causes a TON of mouse lag and it drives me nuts.
The "whine" is literally the movement of the wires in the coils that regulate the power, it's not harmful or dangerous to the card its just a side effect of passing high frequencies through the coils. The fast voltage change causes magnetism changes, causes the wires to push on each other less and more and they move insane small amounts. ()

To see what card you have there is an utility GPU-Z that might help with that.

the model # is on the sticker & When you register it using the serial # sticker info ,  your EVGA  products section will display what exact version it is also.

And BTW, my FTW 2.0 works without any coil whines, I own it for 3 weeks already and nothing unusual so far

Almost ALL GTX 970 make "cricket noises" (coil whine). I hear it in menus or when there is something with extremely high FPS, like some test with 1600 FPS. As long as it's only then (a very faint noise in menus) I think it's ok. Others have cards which make the noise constantly....so I wouldn't worry too much.

Run "adaptive vsync" (in NV control panel or NV Inspector), shouldn't cause any mouse lag. I dont see any in BF4, and to be honest also with "normal" Vsync I had problems "feeling" mouse lag. Another trick is to enter "1" for maximum pre-rendered frames. Adaptive Vsync and 1 max. pre-rendered frame should definitely not cause any input lag. (That being said I can make some tests, aka measuring frametimes to actually see objective numbers...)

Does any of you play GTAV (silly question) an experience this weird buzzing sound? It sounds like coil whine, but a lot lower sound. It is only in-game, when I pause the game it goes away. Temps are around 69°C.

EDIT: Setting the fan speed to higher % doesn't work like in this topic. Also I spotted this only in GTAV, for instance in Alien Isolation there is only coil whine in menus and in-game it's quiet.

It probably is just coil whining. When you pause the game you pause a large amount of activity your card has to do, hence no whining when it'spaused

@MrImSoGood Does that mean it is harmless?
I contacted EVGA support, so we will see. I just wonder if anyone else have this problem in GTA V. I haven't spotted it in any other game yet.
