GTX 970 SSC/FTW+ cooling design?!

I have the FTW+ 970, and without taking the card apart, am I safe to assume that apart from the addition of a backplate there are no other physical differences to the design between the FTW+ and the SSC?
 
If so, judging from the pics in this teardown of the SSC, is everything (vrms, memory) that is attached to the cooling plate via thermal pads not also cooled by the heatsink - that only cools the GPU?! If so, how effective is the cooling plate on its own (with the fans aiding cooling)?

    there are no other physical differences between the FTW+ and SSC.
    the cooling plate spreads the heat to a wider surface which is then better and easier cooled by the fans.
    this bigger the area the better the cooling...
