Hello everyone,
I built a new rig yesterday and I have x2 GTX 970 SSC SLI and my idle temperature is sitting around 60. While playing dying light it goes between 70-80. I'm not sure what the deal is or if that is normal. I would like some advice on what to do if it's not. They are in a 750D corsair tower with a H100i cooling system, Intel 4790k for cpu, 16 gb of vengence ram and 1000 w full modular corsair power supply. CPU temp is about 56.

Are your cards running above 324MHz at idle with nothing open on the desktop? You can use msi afterburner to view the clock speeds.

Do you have a single slot space between cards?

You need to scroll down the msi afterburner hardware monitor graph and locate Core Clock, MHZ to find out what your current core clock is at idle. The one you told me is for adjusting and tweaking your graphics card core clock.

Yes, I have a single space between the video cards and my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-z97x gaming motherboard.
GPU1 core clock says 963 Mhz and GPU2 core clock says 135.

They should both be at 135 at idle. Here are the top reasons for the core to be clocked up at idle with nothing open on the desktop & how to correct them...

#1 You're running multiple monitors. Fix: Enable mutil display power saver using nvidia inspector.
#2 Your machine has a virus. Fix: Scan computer using malwarebytes.
#3 One or more programs running in the background are using your GPU. Fix: Perform a clean boot of windows.
#4 Power management mode inside the nvidia control panel is set to prefer maximum performance. Fix: Set power management mode to adaptive then reboot your computer.
    #5 Running a resolution of 2560x1440 @ 144Hz. Fix: Change refresh rate to 120Hz.
#6 K-Boost is enabled inside Precision X. Fix: Disable K-Boost.
#7 Shadowplay is enabled inside geforce experience. Fix: Disable shadowplay inside geforce experience OR completely uninstall geforce experience from your machine (highly recommended)

    #1 running 1 monitor
#2,#3 fresh install as of 22 hours ago
    #4 already adaptive
#5 I am running 2560 x 1440 @ 144 hz. Monitor is the ASUS ROG Swift (I wanted 144 hz for gaming, can I not keep it at that?)
    #6 Kboost was not enabled
#7 Shadowplay was not enabled, but I uninstalled as you recommended.

MSI afterburner says GPU1 core clock is currently 540, and GPU2 is at 405
Precision X says GPU 1 Clock 962 MHZ 63 temp Fan Speed 325 rpm, GPU 2 Clock 135 MHZ 40 temp Fan Speed 0 rpm.
Is there something wrong with this?

Looks like one of the programs is reading the clocks wrong. Do not run both at the same time, use one or the other. You can still run 144Hz inside your games but to make both cards idle at the desktop correctly you should set the desktop refresh rate to 120Hz. Make sure to close everything on the desktop before checking the clocks inside precision/afterburner.

Okay so I'm using only MSI Afterburner now and GPU 1 and 2 Clocks read 135. Temp for GPU 1 is 55 and GPU 2 is at 40.  I changed the desktop refresh rate to 120 Hz but how do I ensure that I am getting 144 hz in games? I never knew that you can have different refresh rates.

If your screen has a high refresh rate it wont allow the 970's to "idle" at a low temp. Set windows refresh rate to 60Hz and you should see temps return to normal.

When opening whichever game you choose to play you should be able to choose/set which refresh rate you would like to use inside the video settings menu inside the game.

Are you having performance problems, like in game stuttering or something that make you think it's over heating?

I have a set of 970 SSCs in SLI and those temps seem okay to me. They run a 4K monitor and idle is around 60-63, and 80 is the top end. No problems playing anything. Hopefully the SSC backplates coming soon will knock off a few degrees as stated. You could try the other fan curve I guess.

    Here's my idle temps @ 1920x1080 with 60Hz.

Mind you the fans are NOT working until 60'C
