Hi,

It's the first time I post in this forum... Sorry if my English isn't perfect, but I'm Italian... I have a serious problem with my graphics card.
I have built a new PC in February 2016 and I have chosen an EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 as a graphics card, which has been working fine since two weeks ago. When the GTX 970 is put under a slight load (even while watching a 1080p video) my monitor loses HDMI signal from the videocard, but the PC seems to work normally and to make the card work again I have to hard reset my computer, but then the same thing happens. Sometimes the computer won't even start, as everything I see is a black screen with the sentence: "PLEASE POWER DOWN YOUR COMPUTER AND CONNECT THE PCIe POWER CABLES FOR THIS GRAPHICS CARD" when everything is connected properly. I've been trying everything, from uninstalling all the video drivers to removing and installing again Windows (7, by the way), but I didn't work. Could it be a GPU BIOS problem or a hardware failure?
Thank you in advance!

PC Specs:
-Motherboard: MSI H170 Gaming M3
-8 GB HyperX Fury DDR4 RAM
-XFX 550W PU
-EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0

Monitor: Asus VX279Q (if it can help)

Try using the 365.19 drivers. They are working fine for me and completely stable with Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium.

How old is your psu? Have you tried using a different set of pci-e power cables to power the card?

If you're using GeForce Experience I would recommend removing it. It has been known to cause many many issues. Select 'Custom(Advanced) Install option. Uncheck all boxes except for Graphics Driver, PhysX and Audio Driver(if you get audio from a HDMI cable). Check the box for 'Clean Intall'. Remember to reboot after installing the drivers and you should be good to go.

Hi and thanks again for your answers,
My PSU is brand new, and the cables, I have not tried to change them yet. As for GeForce Experience, I will try to uninstall it and all the other drivers in Safe mode (I didn't say that before, but in Windows Safe mode the videocard has never crashed).
I'll let you know if it works.

Good to hear. Hopefully it will last. Usually the "PLEASE POWER DOWN YOUR COMPUTER AND CONNECT THE PCIe POWER CABLES FOR THIS GRAPHICS CARD" is related to a faulty psu/psu power cables not being properly connected.

EDIT: Nope. False victory. After half an hour the screen has turned off again. Unfortunately, it didn't last as I hoped and I'm afraid It's an hardware failure... I had tought to have resolved the problem but it has only shut off later than last time...

As Sajin said earlier, the PSU is probably flaking out. Try testing with another PSU or get this one replaced by whoever you bought it from.

One moment, I have a question. If it really depends on the PSU, shouldn't the whole PC turn off? I have noticed that, like last time, the PC continues running...

It could be a problem with the cables going to the video board or the +12 rail that supplies that power if it is a multi-rail PSU.

Best thing to do at this point would be to either test the card in another machine to make sure the card is ok or buy another psu to try in your system.

I've still got my old PC, but its PSU is way less powerful than the one I have now, and it's built into the case, so I can't remove it... Eventually I will try to return the XFX to Amazon, as the warranty is still valid.

Hi everyone. I have been surfing the Internet almost all day, to find out if it could have been some other sort of hardware failure, and I have discovered that it could be the motherboard. I have tried to boot up the computer again and, like I was expecting, the screen has gone black after 5-10 seconds Windows had started. I have checked out the keyboard to see if it worked, by pressing Caps lock and Num lock keys, but the LEDs on the keyboard don't event light up, so the computer is completely frozen. Could it really be my Mobo that has died?

To me it sounds like the PSU isn't supplying a steady enough power source, and the slight increase in load causes the freeze.

I'd try getting the PSU replaced under RMA.

It's very strange, because, like I said in one of my previous posts, I can access the BIOS and boot up Windows in safe mode without any issue... but when the computer freezes the fans don't turn off, they keep going... Unfortunately, my knowledge on these problems is very limited, and I'm very unsure.

UPDATE: I have cleaned the CMOS memory, by resetting completely the motherboard... at the moment everything's working fine, but I will wait a few days to see if it lasts...

Hello, I have the same card and have experienced the same problem (and have read that a few others have as well).  The solution that worked for me was to underclock with MSI AB to the non-superclocked speeds and set a custom fan curve. It's not much of a speed difference and now it's stable, but it's a bummer it can't run at factory settings.

Hi, and thanks for having posted. I'm using my computer right now and it's working like a charm after the Mobo reset...I didn't touch anything in the BIOS, but now the screen doesn't go black anymore... I hope it will continue working like that! I also wanted to thank you all for your kind support. Have a nice time!

I believe I have similar problems about blackout but it seems to be a issue of software control on the gpu fan. This is was I notice when it resets or does the blackout I notice the cards fans are not turning. So I always have a spare drive that has minimum bare windows on just in case I have to troubleshoot. Install that drive and still notice gpu fans is off reason for reset and blackout since it heats up.
Then with further testing I concluded it was more of a hardware/software control issue. I reinstalled the pc hard-drive then card fans is still off with manual setting to max on MB fan control, but card still has fans off or barely spinning. At first I thought the fan was broken so I cleaned it and it didnt have a problem turning. So the after reading a evga manual I assumed the fan control was on the software which is PrecisionX 16. I install that and saw the settings for fans and cranked it up and what do you know it was spinning fast. Problem solved? No on auto fan control a week later it was blacking out and notice fan was barely spinning thou gpu temp was at 46'c. So crank up the speed to 75% and it solved it, but my main concern is if I put that fan at high rate of speed all the time eventually it will give.(Note my PC is almost 24/7 on with full tower and 10 fans on case) Is there a better way to make that gpu fan control not fail on auto setting or am I stuck on manual setting?

If cranking up the fans manually fixes the problem, then you have a bad card and you should see about an RMA.

FWIW, ACX 2.0 has "0 dB operation" in which the fans will not turn on until the card reaches 60C. That is by design.

And yes, cranking up fan settings on your motherboard does nothing for GPU fans.

And yes, anything mechanical (including fans) will wear down eventually. That's partly why EVGA has a 0 dB mode - the other being to reduce noise. The good news is that EVGA uses higher quality fans and bearings, which helps with longevity.
