Hey guys, I know this topic has been brought up quite a few times already, but I wasn't really sure about my card. I just finished my very first build yesterday and I was very happy to get to use an EVGA GTX 970 card but was very disappointed to discover how loud it was.
My build uses a Define R4 black pearl case, so I assumed it that it would be relatively quite, however this is not the "case" (ha) at all. I can be like 5 meters away from it and still hear the noise and I think I have isolated the noise to the graphics card. In other threats people have posted with their GPU- Z stats, so here is mine.

Have you tried testing each fan to see if it's only one that is louder than the other? Or are both sounding loud?

GPU: EVGA GTX 970 FTW

While the computer is on, lightly press against the center of the GPU fan until the fan stops. Try this with both of the fans separately. See if one is louder than the other. Or do they both sound the same?

Not a problem. If one sounds louder than the other, I think it may need to be RMA'd (since I've read from 2 other people on the forum with similar issues). Though a rep will know for sure.

the issues with the card being loud in idle was also mentioned in the TPU review.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GTX_970_SC_ACX_Cooler/24.html

that's definitely an issue EVGA should look at, other manufacturers pay big attention to noise in this series.
ASUS and Zotac don't even spin up the fans until a certain GPU temps are reached.
I'd love to see something similar in ACX 2.1.

I was looking at my gpu-z info and I noticed that GPU-z shows that I only have 32 ROPs on my EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX. Also the Direct X version is only 11. Then I came onto the forums and saw your GPU-z screenshot and yours says the same thing. Is there something wrong with GPU-z or these cards? Also aida64 says that there are only 32 ROPs as well. Also, how can you tell the ACX version? I didn't know that there was different versions.

I have gtx 970 ACX1.0 and I can say that the card is louder than GTX 780 Ti ACX at 100% fan speed.

But like Im rarely using the card at 100%, is it also as loud when it is in idle?

any other inputs on the noise level? My GTX 970 ACX 1.0 will arrive next Thursday and I already considering refusing it after reading so many awful reviews about it. I have been a life time eVGA fan and I might have to take my money elsewhere this round if the fan is really that loud.

The fan on mine gets really loud, but only if i set the fan profile to aggressive in precision x16. If i set the fan profile to quiet then all is good.

idle is fine. I can hardly hear anything. But as soon as I game, I can hear the fan (with auto fan settings 50c @50% fan speed - 80c @100% fan speed).
When I'm gaming the temp is less than 80c and I can totally hear the fan. I have 5.1 speakers and when I game I set the volume to an average loud.

Dear Flodian,

I can confirm that this fan should not be loud if the card is idling and I am very sorry for any inconvenience. Please email me the serial number for your product to chrisb@evga.com and I will work with you to have your product exchanged if it is not working properly.

I just installed and tested my new GTX 970 SC ACX 1.0 and it is whisper quiet at idle and load.  Cranked up to 100% manually in precisionX and it makes the normal warp speed fan noise, nothing louder than any other 80mm card fan that I have owned...  no buzzes or whines from the fan.

Is there likely to be passive cooling firmware update for the ACX1? Mine isn't particularly loud but never drops below about 1400rpm when in the low 40c range.

My fans on my two cards are also a bit too loud for my taste. Definitely much louder than on my old GTX680. I don't have much of a problem with a loud fan in general but it is high pitched and annoying.

If its more of a high pitch whine, that might be coil whine and not the fans. Using something like afterburner, does the whine get louder if you set the fan speed higher or only when the card is under a higher load?

What you could try to do is use msi afterburner or evga precision to set a less aggressive fan profile. This will lead to higher temperatures but it will be quieter.

I am also very disappointed with my 2x EVGA GTX 970 SC cards. I had 2x GTX 780 FTW cards and I thought it would be an upgrade...
Well perfomance-wise it's an upgrade, however the EVGA GTX 970 SC cards make way, way more noise that GTX 780 cards did.

I really, really regret getting the EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX cards. Thinking about selling / ditching  them as soon as possible. I really starting to doubt EVGA. Maybe it's time to move on and try MSI's videocards instead... Really disappointed.

And FYI; with the 2x GTX 780 FTW's I could only head my case fans, but now I hear the 2x GTX 970 SC's instead of my case fans. They did really change something about the GTX 970 SC ACX. I don't know what, but I can hear it... Sigh.

use evga prec V5.2.3 everything on normal settings. but that is not the appropriate thing to adjust something.

Well after a few days of testing, I just must conclude the noise is really bad. Since I still have some faith left in EVGA, I went ahead and pre-ordered 2x GTX 970 FTW cards.

I hope they will arrive within the next 3 weeks, so I will be able to get the backplates also. Will sell the regular GTX 970's shortly after.

Just a random question. Does the gtx970 have a light up logo/title on the side?

I have the issue of loud sound from the GTX 970 SC ACX 1.0 during some Heavy games, but I have made some tests and seems like the coolers are not the problem.
The sound does not start in all games, no matter how hight load is. At the same cooler rpm (according to EVGA Precision X data)  there is a sound in some game, and there is no sound in other. Also I tried to manually stop each of 2 coolers separately to define which one of them are whining, but the sound didn't changed, so either both of them whining or the issue is not in the coolers.

Also I can define that sound like electric buzzing in one frequency, not cooler whine with changing frequency depended from rpm.

You must check your both the fans are working in which way. I mean press your both fans of the GTX in the middle of the fans one by one. You must observe the noise in both the fans. If both giving the same noise then no problem but if only one is giving noise then there is the problem in that fan.
