I'm working on compiling data, mostly to sate my curiosity, related to ASIC and its effect on a card's stock performance.

If you want to contribute, you can grab your ASIC score and Boost GPU Core Clock easily from GPU-Z. To get your card's ASIC, open up GPU-Z, right-click in the top left corner, and select "Read ASIC Quality." To get your boost clock, an easy way is to get OC Scanner X, select the 3d test "Plasma (1M-particle)," then run it and note your GPU Core Clock listed under load in the Sensors tab of GPU-Z.

Here are three EVGA GTX 970 FTW cards with their ASIC scores and their boost clocks with 100% default settings. I also took a look at the BIOS of the 970 FTW and grabbed the index of the Boost Table (out of 74) that most likely correlates with each.

My Data
ASIC 65.0% | Boost 1379.5 MHz | Boost Clock #62 (1380.0)
ASIC 67.9% | Boost 1392.2 MHz | Boost Clock #63 (1392.5)
ASIC 76.8% | Boost 1417.5 MHz | Boost Clock #65 (1418.0)

Additional Data
ASIC 64.3% | Boost 1379.5 MHz | VulgarDisplay88
ASIC 65.0% | Boost 1379.5 MHz | OP
ASIC 66.2% | Boost 1379.? MHz | Nicscap92
ASIC 67.9% | Boost 1392.2 MHz | OP
ASIC 68.4% | Boost 1392.2 MHz | Premise
ASIC 68.7% | Boost 1392.? MHz | un4givn85
ASIC 71.1% | Boost 1404.4 MHz | glynn93
ASIC 71.4% | Boost 1404.8 MHz | bain64
ASIC 73.0% | Boost 1404.? MHz | hanson1979
ASIC 73.1% | Boost 1404.? MHz | hanson1979
ASIC 73.1% | Boost 1404.8 MHz | traneland

ASIC 76.8% | Boost 1417.5 MHz | OP
ASIC 77.7% | Boost 1429.8 MHz | ManBearPig
ASIC 78.3% | Boost 1430.2 MHz | ManBearPig

Overclock @ Stock
For those of you who are comfortable with overclocking and know how to properly test for stability, do you mind posting your maximum stable core clock overclock as recorded in GPU-Z with OC Scanner's Plasma test?

I consider stable to be no artifacting or driver crashes in Fire Strike, no issues with Furry Donut v2 (I tend to test for 5-15 minutes, but it usually crashes very quickly once I reach unstable numbers), and no issues running Valley benchmark Extreme HD.

ONLY adjust your core clock, not your power, voltage, or memory. It'll help us compare apples to apples again.

ASIC 67.9% | OC @ Stock 1442.? MHz (+50 Offset) | OP
ASIC 68.7% | OC @ Stock(?) ~1525 MHz| un4givn85
ASIC 73.1% | OC @ Stock ~1480 MHz | painis4thaweak
ASIC 75.?% | OC @ Stock 1510 MHz  | staypuft
ASIC 76.8% | OC @ Stock 1496.6 MHz (+79 Offset) | OP
ASIC 78.3% | OC @ Stock 1581.2 MHz (+151 Offset) | ManBearPig
ASIC 79.8% | OC @ Stock ~1490MHz | painis4thaweak

I can also tell you that the higher ASIC card overclocks much more stably on air without any adjustments apart from core clock speed.

I found Furry Donut 2 (part of EVGA OC Scanner X) to be a pretty reliable indicator of stability. It crashes almost instantly when a card's core is clocked too high.

I couldn't go much higher than a +40 offset on the ASIC 65.0% card (failed to write down exact numbers for this, but it was below +50). I can go to +50 (core clock of ~1442MHz) on the card with an ASIC of 67.9%. I can get to +79 (core clock of ~1496MHz) on the ASIC 76.8% card.

Once voltage is applied and/or BIOSes are edited, the numbers can certainly change (e.g. the ASIC 67.9% card can get to a stable boost of 1531MHz with BIOS changes on air while remaining well below 70 °F), but the majority of users are going to stay away from editing their BIOS, even on a card like the 970 FTW that provides multiple BIOSes to protect you for wrecking your card.

I suppose if I make that argument, though, most users aren't going to overclock their pre-overclocked cards anyway.

If the are other 970 FTW users out there who can post their ASIC and Boost clock at stock, we can compile some useful information, even if it's just for the sake of our own interest and examination and yields nothing tangibly useful.

It's also possible that it would be better to do this with the Gigabyte G1 Gaming since it seems be the most popular GTX 970 with overclockers. I'm still sticking with EVGA because their customer service is amazing and they are based in the US.

    ASIC: 73.1%
    Stock Boost: 1404.8 MHz
    Overclocked Boost: 1524.3 MHz | Core: +120 Mem: +400
I'm pretty sure my overclock is stable. I ran Unigine Valley, Heaven, Firestrike, Guild Wars 2, Battlefield 4, Skyrim and it hasn't crashed on me yet. *fingers crossed*
Although I've never used furry donut for longer than 1 minute since I was told by many people that this is potentially a dangerous software to use on your card.
If there's any other info you need that could help you then feel free to ask!

Thanks, guys! This data is very interesting.

So far, it seems the hypothesis that higher ASIC directly correlates with stock boost is true. We'll need more samples to extrapolate a lot of useful information from it, but so far...

It appears there's a ~5% range for each boost bin.

Something like this seems to be developing:
    ASIC 61-65% = Boost Bin #62
    ASIC 66-70% = Boost Bin #63
    ASIC 71-75% = Boost Bin #64
    ASIC 76-80% = Boost Bin #65
    ASIC 81-85% = Boost Bin #66

The last one isn't supported with data in this thread as of yet, but the Hardware Canucks review had its 970 FTW stock boost at 1430 MHz, which likely means they had a higher ASIC card than the rest of us for the review.

That's because the ASIC value (based on a binning table) is used to set the boost values and the default vid of the card. This is already known.

    970 FTW 1:
    ASIC = 78.3%
    Boost = 1430.2 MHz

    970 FTW 2:
    ASIC = 77.7%
    Boost = 1429.8 MHz

That is with everything stock.  I don't know what my maximum OC is yet, haven't pushed them that far since there is no game that needs that much.  But I was able to get them up to 1550 MHz and I when I game, they are at 1525 MHz.

    ASIC: 70.3%
    Boost: 1367MHz

That is the stock overclock, not the actual boost. You can see your boost by grabbing something like GPU-Z (look at the Sensors tab) and running OC Scanner's Plasma test. Your boost is likely 1392 or 1405.

Here are my results at my maximum OC.  This was using my 970 FTW that has 78.3% ASIC.

Max OC with stock power, memory, and voltage.  Only thing changed was the clock offset which I did +151.
    Stock max OC: 1581.2 MHz

I then gave power 110%, voltage +87 and clock offset +151 to get my real max OC.
    True max OC: 1593.9 MHz

    970 FTW Card 2: ASIC - 79.8% ; Boost - ~1490MHz (under F @ H)

Both cards have returned successful work units up to 1510MHz core. Haven't attempted a higher OC.

Some of these results look pretty good. Thanks for doing this!

I posted my overclock results in my original post but I adjusted power and memory. Didn't know you wanted just the core clock to be adjusted! Sorry!

My SSC has a 68.7% ASIC. Stock boost is 1392. Max oc for folding so far is 1525. Those same settings get about 1480 due to the power limit.

ManBearPig, those are beastly numbers. Holy crap.

julizs, that sucks that you had to RMA the card. That's the highest ASIC I've seen. I have some minor buzzing on my current FTW, but it's little enough that I don't hear it when playing games with sound on.

that's exactly what I thought as well reading the numbers.

which bios version do you have guys? my one says

The bios version on my 76.8% ASIC card is 84.04.28.00.71.

The bios version on my 67.9% ASIC card is 84.04.1F.00.75 (pretty sure I updated this from the official EVGA thread).

They're also 1KB different in size (176KB for the former, 175KB for the latter).

The bios seems to be compatible with either. I flashed my newer/high ASIC card with a bios I modded for the other and it worked just fine. Got my boost clocks to >1540 MHz with it while remaining below 65 °F. Went back to the normal bios, though (with fan mods because I don't like it running at 0 RPM), because I can get to 1520 MHz with maxed power (110%) and voltage (87mV).

I do hit the power limit really fast without modding the bios though, which is a little frustrating (e.g. in 3DMark Fire Strike, it throttles down to ~1468, sometimes lower, due to power). The biggest weakness of the FTW card is its power. These could clock even higher with higher stock power limits.

so can we say 84.04.1F.00.75 is the most latest one? I did not update the bios.

did you use r0ach's modded bios? he has increased the power limit as far as know.

Nope. I used the NOLIMITS/GameStable thread on Overclockers.net and looked at the 970 bioses there as a guideline, then manually edited the bios myself.

do you notice any difference between 84.04.28.00.71 and 84.04.1F.00.75 versions?

Are you guys happy with the build quality of your cards? Apart from the loud buzzing this is my experience:

The cooling solution of the 970 FTW is way worse then for example the MSI 970. I was able to compare both, and subjectively the MSI fans spin half the speed of the FTW fans and still kept the card almost 10 degrees cooler in my case. Also, the FTW fans have a weird turbulence sound at a certain (relatively low) point of rpm, sounds a bit like a racing car starting. And when the FTW fans "shut down", they still try to move every 5 seconds making a small squirking sound (I have a non dampened windowed case standing on a shelf, still the MSI was silent as a cat lol).

So all in all, I'm not amazed by the quality of the 970 FTW, especially at 390 euros. Imo Evga should at least for their FTW series invest in better parts instead of just doing marketing (acx 2.0 50% cooler, 30% more quiet, compared to WHAT?). I get that the cool thing about Evga cards is that you can change the cooler without garantuee loss, but they still should try to improve the stock cooler and not move backwards. How about 100mm FDB fans for the FTW? Now that would be premium and an innovation.
