Bought a 970 FTW+ last week. It had coil whine, returned it, the second one had it, returned it again, the third one has it too. Should I just give up at this point? I really want this card but if they are all gonna make the most irritating sound in the world, there's no way I'm keeping it. I'll try my luck with another brand or...get a 290x. Does anyone have a 970 FTW+ that does not whine?

the 970 destroys the 290x... I read some posts that people ran Heaven benchmark at lower resolution and ran it for awhile which helped them get rid of the coil whine. if it doesnt go away, then get an RMA on it, and then decided to take your "chances" on the 290x.

stalinx20the 970 destroys the 290x... Yeah that's exactly why I want to stay with Nvidia. Don't really want a space heater that performs worse, but if every 970 I have whines, that's the only option to me. stalinx20I read some posts that people ran Heaven benchmark at lower resolution and ran it for awhile which helped them get rid of the coil whine. if it doesnt go away, then get an RMA on it, and then decided to take your "chances" on the 290x. So run it at like 1366x768 nonstop for a couple days then I guess? I've got time cause Amazon is out of stock on the FTW+ now, guess I've returned too many lol. Not gonna mess around with RMAing with EVGA, much easier with Amazon and they pay the shipping and send me a replacement immediately.

What power supply do you have? Coil whine can be caused by other components, and since it is a very obvious recurring issue, it may not be the gpu.

Not exactly the same, but I have two 970 SSC ACX 2.0+ cards. Luckily, neither have any coil whine.

Forgot to add that info. I have a Corsair TX550m, but its not the problem because I went to the store and bought a Corsair AX860, which is a much better PSU than the TX550m I have, and tried it on the first two cards that had the coil whine and they still did it. Maybe its my motherboard, I sure hope not cause I don't really wana buy another Z77 board cause of the dead end LGA 1155 socket.

Your GPU fan should be pretty high under full load, not sure how you'd hear it with all that racket. Anyways coil whine isn't really a problem, its normal for some cards. My old GTX 770 had some coil whine but no big deal. Its not like the card is defective for one reason or another. Just turn your fan up higher! Less coil whine noise, cooler GPU win win!

Well the card has been running haven all night, hasn't been 24 hours of run time yet but I don't think it's going to fix it. Gonna try putting it in an old HP computer thats about 7 years old to test if its my motherboard, if it still does it, its going back to Amazon again.

There's a good chance it won't work in that PC unless you can get an updated BIOS that supports the 900 series GPU's. But you can try it to be sure.

Yeah I was wondering about that, it had an old 7600 GT and it has a pci-e 2.0 slot so I'll see. I unfortunately don't have anything else to test it in.

Well I got the card working in the old computer, was unable to get haven or valley benchmark to work so I used Furmark instead, and sure enough, it whined. Realized later that I should probably use a program less stressful than Furmark, so later I'll try to get 3DMark or some other program to work on it. Here's a picture of what it looks like, had to take the board out of the HP case cause the card wouldn't fit.

I just received my fourth card from Amazon today (was surprised to receive it this quickly, their website says delivery in 1-2 months) and sure enough, it whines. I have tried everything suggested to fix the problem. I have used a different power supply, a different computer, run haven for over 24 hours straight, use different power cables to connect the card, and nothing fixed it. I don't pay over $300 for a computer component so that it can irritate me with an endless high pitched noise, I have absolutely no idea how some of you put up with it. I am giving up on the 970, hopefully AMD's 300 series will actually outperform everything Nvidia has now so that prices on the 980 get lowered enough for me to consider buying one.

What I'm saying is that it doesn't have standoff pins for the MoBo to ground itself to the case and discharge any electricity. So the next time you touch your MoBo you may end up shocking it with 100V which you couldn't feel.
There are also other things that could happen and it just wasn't a good idea.

Yeah, you're right that it wasn't a good idea, I was just so frustrated that all these cards were having the same problem and wanted to make sure that it wasn't my main computer's motherboard. The card wouldn't fit in the HP's case so I had to take the board out. Wouldn't care too much if the board died anyways, the computer hasn't been used regularly for over 3 years, I guess it could have ruined the card but I was returning it anyway, could care less what happens to it as long as its not on fire lol.

What are you using to test said "coil whine"? Something I have noticed is that most "coil whine" happens with Synth benchmarks and is mostly non existent in real world games. I have two 970 GTX FTW's in two separate machines and both coil whine like crazy in 3DMark but not at all in GTA V or other games maxed out. Make sure you arnt basing your problem on a synth benchmark. Tbh coil whine has been around for years on many cards. It by no means is an indication of an issue or a potential issue. From an engineering stand point of you fully understood what a graphics card does its pretty mind blowing.

Yes I realize that all four cards functioned and performed properly, but to me, paying over $300 for a card only to have it produce one of the most annoying sounds in the world (constant high pitch) while in use is completely unacceptable. My current GTX 660 has no coil whine whatsoever, and neither did my old GTX 260.

I totally would, but all they will do is ask me to RMA the card and send it back to them at my own expense. Shipping costs for all of these cards would be at least $10 each, so going this route for the four cards I returned to Amzon would cost at least $40, most likely ovet $50. I got free return shipping with Amazon, which is why I laugh at the statement in the box saying not to return the card to the store, do they seriously think I'll pay to send it back to them when I can do it free with Amazon?

I'm sorry you've had so much trouble with coil whine on your 970 FTW+ cards. It's extremely unusual to have so many cards in a row produce significant coil whine. Do be aware that while the coil whine is coming from the card, it's not always caused by the card itself. The same card may whine on three different systems, but have no whine whatsoever on another three systems. Many times it comes down to the combination of hardware used, or even "dirty" power from the wall. As others have stated, high loads on the card, or extreme frame rates can produce excess coil whine as well. Generally keeping the framerate below the refresh rate of your monitor can help if you're playing games that can push 150+ FPS by enabling V-Sync. 3DMark Fire Strike and Furmark can also put a significant load on the cards, and cause an otherwise quiet card to whine. Also be aware than coil whine is becoming more prevalent with newer, more powerful cards, and a faint whine under load when you get close to the card is not all that uncommon anymore. If it's loud enough to be heard a couple feet from a closed case though, it's enough to be considered abnormal. We can always assist you with an RMA for a hand-tested card to help eliminate the odds of getting a card with coil whine. We can also assist with the shipping cost within 30 days of purchase per our warranty terms, so you don't have to pay the shipping to us. The statement on the box to contact us first before returning the product is there so we can assist with troubleshooting potential issues and save the customer time sending back a product that may not be faulty. We have no problem with you returning products to the place of purchase if that is more convenient for you. Give us a call at 888-881-3842 or email at support@evga.com if you like so we can assist you further.
