Hello everyone, I am very excited for I just built my very first rig 2 days ago with: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Motherboard Intel iCore i7 4770k @stock (atm) Corsair H100i Cpu watercooler Ripjaws x DDR3 2133 8gb (2x 4gb) EVGA gtx 780 SC ACX Corsair HX850 Gold Howver, I am very disappointed to hear some really loud high pitch screeching/ squealing/ coile whine whenever I try to play older games that yield high fps (280fps+). Also when I run some light benchmarks (1st test on 3dmark. I used the demo which only has the option to run all three tests) the gpu can't seem to handle the amount of fps that it causes my whole system to crash and shut off then restart (no blue screens just sudden shutoff/restart). I know this because turning on v sync eliminates the issues. I know that I will have no use for all the extra fps beyond my monitor's refresh rate, but I expected everything to work without any issues especially for a high quality card. I did spend about $650 after all for this one card. Is this normal for all cards or have I gotten a lemon? Does this happen to you guys?

It is not a lemon, coil whine happens. Normally it will go away over time but if you don't want to wait just RMA it.

And if I RMA it, the new card won't do the same?

No way to find out really... it's not a very common issue. My GTX 780 works just fine.

As CAxVIPER states, it usually will go away after some use. Otherwise, on those older games, you should try turning on vsync either in game or in the NVidia control panel, this way it will not allow to have those really frame rates, which should quiet things down.

Same thing happens with my GTX 770 but only when I have vsync disabled and running benchmarks I noticed it the most when running 3dmark vantage, 11 or firestrike, But when I cap it to 60fps (my monitor refresh rate) then its fine with no squeal.

Its normal yes, but however for those running on a 120hz or 144hz monitor, even that framerate can probably cause a bit of sequal too on older games. This is why Nvidia added a adaptive (Half refresh rate) option to the Nvidia Control panel to force the vsync down to 60fps on older games.

My PSU whines at very high FPS too. Really only during 3D Mark when FPS hit over 1000.

The coil whine occurs when the onboard power supply/regulators are under high load. When you use lower frame rates (as with vsync) you lower the power loads and power output. Not all coils on all boards will exhibit whining. Whether this is "normal" is a matter of opinion. Some manufacturers will support an RMA for this problem, others will not.

Sure you can RMA it, but they can't garantee you get a replacement without the whining

I had the same problem, but it turns out it was the PSU which died suddenly about a month after I started hearing the whine. After I got a replacement, the whine went away completely. Have you checked your PSU voltage lately?
