Both companies need a little blowback of angry consumers from this tiered release approach.  It maximizes profits sure...but when you have people dropping $700 to $1k on a card only to have it beaten in less than a few months ought to get some people having at least SOME buyer's remorse.

We all know that new tech comes out and makes old tech look obsolete,  but this isn't new tech.  It's the same tech with all of it's parts enabled.  And they got you, especially you Titan and 780 buyers, hook, line, and sinker.  The few of you that aren't furious should be.  Must have more money than sense......
I enjoy Nvidia but please, AMD create some real competition!

And for full disclosure, I'm thoroughly enjoying my 2x 670FTW I got for ~$700 a year ago.  At 1080 and 1440, I'm hanging right in there with this card for the same price....for the entire last year.

I agree 100%.

You get the sheep telling you well its your fault for "jumping the gun" or "no one put a gun to your head".  They just don't get what's happening here.

I know back in the days, if a company tried pulling stunts like this, they'd feel the wrath of the customers.  Now you get robots defending them.

That's because profile of customers...
You can't sell craps and cheat someone who want to buy Ferrari or house or plane and earn money for that.
But 70% of gamers are completely different profile of people who behave as addicts, they fall in collapse when CEO show in peace of silver plastic and start to talk every year about best graphic card... I mean every year humanity see best graphic card, same as best card ever, best TV ever, that's normal... NVIDIA, and special Asian people use that to build own Empire on west money. Because such disrespect of customers as NVIDIA sell and present to world, such disrespect of people who overprice their product and other money, time, is unseen except maybe mafia against prostitutes, because in any other part of criminal you lose head if they saw someone who don't respect other people.

Translator is good when you translate from German on English or English on Italian, but some language...
you can't believe how that text look.

Is double precision enabled as it is on the Titan? ..or is it just 2880 cuda cores w/o DP?

Titan destroys the 780Ti in compute.

So DP is diabled on the GTx780 Ti??

Not completely disabled. For gtx780(Ti) the DP/SP ratio is 1/24. For Titan it is 1/3. So Titan has a huge compute advantage.

Re: GTX 780 Ti 2013/11/09 23:44:10 (permalink)
It is a matter of the DP units' clock speed. The GK110 architecture has 192 FP32 units and 64 FP64 units per SMX, with a total of 15 SMX.
Titan has 14 SMX activated: 2688 FP32 + 896 FP64 units. Normally, the FP64 units will run at 1/8 the clock speed of the FP32 units (resulting in 1/24 DP performance of SP performance). However, you can enable the Titan's FP64 units to run at full speed. This will disable GPU Boost and force the card to drop its base clock if needed to maintain power and thermal profiles (FP64 units can put a but more stress on the card); however, it will give you roughly 1/3 DP performance of SP performance.
780 Ti has all SMX enabled: 2880 FP32 + 960 FP64 units. However, there is no option to run the FP64 units at full speed, keeping them running at 1/8 the clock speed of the FP32 units.
As I see it, Titan was more a kind of card to let the masses try out high-end DP performance. It really wasn't design though for serious DP work due to the lack of ECC memory protection, HyperQ’s MPI functionality, and GPU Direct’s RDMA functionality.
Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6760/nvidias-geforce-gtx-titan-part-1/4

If you really want to get DP work done, it makes more sense to get either a Tesla K20X (same performance as Titan in DP mode, but with the 3 features mentioned above that were lacking in Titan), or a Quadro K6000 (even faster, being a full GK110, and with the ability to run visualization work, not just compute). Now those will cost you $4000 and $5000 respectively, but for 4x or 5x the cost, you also get the features you need for professional work. As a gaming card, DP performance doesn't factor in at all.

780Ti beats a Titan gaming....and thats what most of us do ;) For Compute Quaddro or Tesla....wonder how many folks actually purchased a Titan for Compute vs gaming :)

WRONG.  Overall NO.  People don't really know what a Titan is capable of.

Ya I think i have decided to sell my 2 EVGA titans for 2 780 TI classifieds when they come out. I have had fun with my titans, added ACX coolers and backplates on the both, and they have treated me well. But I have been doing less and less compute and only game on a single screen now. So i think these titans should go to a good home where they will be used to their full potential. Now the battle begins if i want to wait for classifieds or get some ACX superclocked versions now.

How did the 780 Classifieds do over the Reference 780s?

^^^^ I'm swapping out Tri SLi680 Classy's for a couple of 780Ti SC Cards, figuring I'm going to get almost equal performance with these Cards vs 3 680's....now if I had SLi Titans I certainly wouldnt give them up for a couple of Cards with a few more unlocked shaders......dont quite see the "reasoning" there....but enjoy!

What about Titan SC vs 780ti stock? I had no idea EVGA produces Titan SC version too, but it should be close to 780ti performance WITH 6gb of ram.

ive been testing my 780ti vs my volt modded titan clock for clock and max oc for both.

titan on water with 1.35v vs 780ti on air with 1.212v the 780ti is roughly 2 to 3% faster so far, once the 780ti gets under water and 1.35v on it, its going to rip the titan a new one imo, my 780ti can do 1330 core with 1.212v, and 3900 mem so far.

That's true. But the higher the number of pixels, the better the Titan and the worse the Ti performs respectively, getting even beat by the Titan in some games. So, for multiple monitors and 4K, unfortunately, the 3 GB VRAM of the Ti sucks ass. Trust me, I do not appreciate this at all. I've been waiting for the "ungimped" version of the GK110 since the Titan came out, and Nvidia, true to its roots, had to gimp something in the Tis, being the VRAM this time. I would just hold onto the Titans until there is a fully unlocked Maxwell. Probably this time next year. Longer if AMD can't keep up.

I still have 60 days left before my Step Up runs out and I think I'm gonna swap to a 780 Ti if they release a 6GB version. However, knowing EVGA, I doubt the 6GB version would be eligible for Step Up because it's not reference or some bull.

Just be glad AMD released those 290 and 290x's.  Nvidia would have probably held the release on this  fully enabled gk110 and made it the 860.  Or hell rebranded gk110 into the entire 800 series, bumped performance 5-10%, and charged $100 more across the board.  It would be the 8800 all over again.

Instead of smashing AMD at every release Nvidia should focus on improving their surround to compete with AMD's eyefinity.
