Re:GTX 680 - problems resuming from S3 sleep

Just to chime in I am using a EVGA GTX 670 and a Z77 motherboard from another vendor. I too cannot resume from S3. For me the system appears to come back up but the display remains off. I have also noticed that my USB keyboard is not active. On my previous system I had intermittent issues with waking from S3 where either the display wouldn't wake or the keyboard wouldn't wake. I looked in the mobo BIOS for the Internal PLL Overvoltage setting but I don't have that - I have do have a CPU PLL setting in the voltages section which I assume is the same thing but there is not a 'disabled' option for this, only 'Auto' or specific values. I am using the 302.xx driver set for Windows 8.

The 304.84 Beta Driver didn't solve this problem either... Would someone at EVGA or nVidia please FIX this Problem! I want my damn S3 Sleep back without buying new hardware.

I did not have the resume from sleep problem until I installed the latest beta Nvidia driver 304.79. I installed the 301.42WHQL, 301.40 beta, and 304.48 beta and all resumed from sleep without a problem. I am having this same issue with a 670 and an 59 classified board. I am pretty disappointed that there still is not a viable solution to this problem months after the first post. Am I to believe that EVGA has given up on this issue? Having to leave my computer on all day is somewhat of a bother.

@ majcric: Care to enlighten us? Can't give much credit to what you've posted. @ General: So for the past Week I've been in talk with the Local EVGA Techsupport trying to figure out if this Problem can be resolved or at least be identified by going through a more personal Conversation testing various BIOS / Hardware Changes. At first we tried to check the RAM by underclocking it which left my system quite unimpressed thus not solving the issue. We then tried to check if the PCIe SSD might cause the problem so I installed Win7 on a spare HDD which then would actually allow me to return form S3 but not without doing the dreaded full restart. PCIe SSD + GTX480 = Perfekt S3 HDD + GTX480 = Flawless but slower S3 PCIe SSD + GTX680 = Broken S3 including full Restart HDD + GTX680 = Working but really long S3 including full Restart
I'm now waiting for a reply on monday for what to do next as I was only able to test it shortly before Weekend.

S3 sleep is not broken with any of the drivers I've tried with my gtx 680. After having such a diffcult time with the GTX 560ti, ie producing rainbow streaking desktop, green blankout youtube videos. display driver has stopped responding, etc I'm just happy the GTX 680 is working like it should, at least for now.

EVGA_MatthewH Can anyone having the issue with sleep please do the following: Make the subject "680 sleep issue". Model of motherboard: BIOS version: CPU: Yes I have tried S1, S3, S1&S3: What happens when you resume from sleep?: This will help me reproduce the issue and work on it for you guys. I have an EVGA GTX 670 also having a problem resuming from s3 sleep. Motherboard EVGA 132-BL-E758 BIOS Version 83 CPU Core i7 920 OS Vista Ultimate 64bit Driver Version 301.42 Chipset drivers version from EVGA 9.3.0.1019 I have an EVGA GTX 460FPB that works fine resuming from s3 sleep. While I had the GTX 670 installed I tried the three setting options in the bios: the 670 does not resume from s3 sleep with the BIOS set for s3 or s1&s3, however the 670 does resume from s1 sleep. To me, the s1 sleep is almost like keeping the computer on, so that is not an option for me. Trying to resume from s3 sleep with the 670 results in the fans starting and I assume everything else except video to my monitors which are not getting a signal. Not being able to resume from s3 sleep is a real pain for me, so, I will continue to use the GTX 460 until a resolution for the 670 is issued. I prefer the 670 if it would work, so,I'll wait for a while longer before requesting a RMA. If there is any other troubleshooting I can do safely, please let me know.

Model of motherboard: EVGA x58 SLI, Part # 132-BL-E758-A1 BIOS version: 83 CPU: i7 920 @ 3.8 without HT, Prime95 stable Yes I have tried S1, S3, S1&S3: What happens when you resume from sleep?: Computer restarts, gives "Recovered from error" screen. When I select "Start Windows normally", it shows the words "Starting Windows", but the windows logo never appears and windows does not actually start. I usually hit the restart button on my case, and it will boot fine. Usually cycles for a few seconds (can be up to like 20 seconds) through the little F8, F6, F3 repeat stage before hitting C1 and beeping, and actually booting. btw I have a 670 FTW

Soooooo... Today I received the reply I mentioned in my 2nd last Post and I'm certainly not amused about the results. It's not an official statement but at least it's an explaination as to what went wrong. The Techsupport I've been talking to explained the following ( loose translation as I'm not using the English Techsupport ): "In this case it appears as if the installed Hardware is overwhelming the Motherboard. The X58 Board has a set amount of Option ROM through which the connected Devices are beeing loaded. Bla bla bla ( some talk about the specific Hardware I'm using ) bla bla bla. The reason why it worked with the GTX480 would be the lack of RAM it has in comparison to the 600 Series which needs to address more Bandwidth. You could attempt to disable all Onboard Devices you wouldn't need like the 2nd LAN port or the Onboard Sound Chip if they aren't used. We can't guarante for this to free up enough ROM in order to get the GTX680 working like expected." Needless to say it didn't work but it somehow makes sense as I remember a Thread in which they explained why at some point the Firmware wouldn't allow any BOOT Logos anymore - Not enough space to have it loaded into it. I'm mad as hell about this.

Yeah that is a crap answer. If I had known that this card would not allow me to sleep my PC then I would never have upgraded from the 580 which worked just fine. I hope that is not the final answer to this problem and it can still be fixed with some sort of driver update. Unbelievable.

"If my HDMI monitor turns off, then it seemingly loses the monitor and will not come back. I have to physically unplug the monitor from the back of the GTX 680 and plug it back in for it to be recognized again. " This and the sleep were the main problems i was having OK!!!!! so Good news! hopefully... lol so i dont know if this problem has been solved But if it has not been i found a solution that worked perfectly for me (hopefully i dont make a fool out of myself) Alright so here is what i did; all while hooked up to display using a VGA i uninstalled all drivers reboot installed latest beta drivers 304.79, reboot, then unplugged vga and plugged in HDMI windows recognized the display as a second monitor and made it the primary went to control panel and asked windows to detect a display and when it couldn't find the VGA connection, windows got rid of the original VGA display . So now i was left with just my HDMI connection Then finally i went to the power settings within windows and told it to sleep my display after an amount of time. i put 1 min. after waiting for my screen to go dark i powered off the display then powered back on... waited a few seconds... 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... moved mouse erratically!!!! and my GTX 680 came back to life i then just set the sleep to whatever time i want and the GTX always come backs. oh yeah! hopefully this helps and again sorry for my horrible english its like 3 in the morning now... supertired.... good night everybody... zzz ZZZ zzz ZZZ zzz QUICK UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just when i thought this was perfect... After Doing this your sound though the HDMI is disabled!!!! so if you use built in speakers just re-route audio through AUX, Optical, or someother way like external speakers. it is disabled because it tricks your card into thinking that your HDMI is a DVI... IDK why.

I have the same problem as ReaperV. Whenever windows 7 starts my tv (Panasonic plasma) does not recieve the video signal from the vga. I have to unplug the hdmi for a few seconds then I plug it back on and works perfectly everytime. Same issue if I turn the tv off. My specs: gigabyte sniper m3 z77 mobo intel core i7 3770k evga gtx 670 sli Everything else works just fine. I don't know about S3 sleep issue since I don't use it. So it doesn't matter the mobo model, nor the cpu chipset (amd/intel). This must be a driver issue ... windows 7? nvidia drivers? I'll personally wait until this has a official solution

Here is my request for the appropriate person at EVGA to give an update on having a resolution for this problem. I posted information about my problem with a GTX 670 and also sent the information to EVGA by e-mail. I've had no response. Also, with NVIDIA's forum being down for an extended period of time, there is no information from their web site at all.

I'm having this same issue with my system not recovering from sleep after extended periods (presumably dropped into S3), after installing an EVGA FTW+ GTX680. I had an EVGA GTX 295 in the system before, and had no problems with sleep states in the last year, until I upgraded my video card to the GTX 680. The problem started immediately after that, and seems to kick in only after the system has been in a sleep state for longer than 4 hours. Initial symptoms are the same as most have reported... upon resume from sleep everything seems to power up except the video card. I have not been able to get a video signal by unplugging and then reconnecting the monitor cable on the card (using HDMI). I have to actually power off the system to recover... resetting it will result in a boot up to a brief view of the login screen, and then the video signal drops again. Actually powering off the system (holding down power button for 10 seconds, etc.), will result in full recovery. Watching this thread to see if there is an answer soon. System specs: PSU: Zalman ZM1000-HP MB: ASUS P8P67-M, AMI bios ver 1102 Proc: Intel i7 2600K RAM: 8GB SpecTek DDR3 GPU: EVGA GTX 680 FTW+ (4GB), with Nvidia 301.10, or 301.42 drivers OS: Win 7 Pro, 64-bit

Guys all these sort of problems will get worse with new equipment trying to save more energy ! They have been around for a while, I used to have to use a "gefen dvi detector" on a media center so the gfx card would see the TV after S3 standby. I currently run my media centre on VGA so If I have too many beers and miss the end of the movie it shuts the TV off :D HDMI and Game port may be more problematic than conventional DVI or VGA for sure, there use to be software around that from a hot key could reload the display driver....anyone tried that ? There are workarounds which I think you may have to look towards for a fix, even a fast SSD should get to windows desktop a couple of seconds slower than S3 resume after it's initialised network adapters etc..

Same problem here.... monitor doesn't wake when resuming from S3, and computer winds up rebooting since switching from two GTX 260s to a single GTX 670. Running the 304.79 beta drivers on an X58 SLI LE with an i7 920.

After working with EVGA tech support trying many different options with MOBO bios, settings in Vista and powercfg that did not work, EVGA did have a final resolution: Don't use S3 sleep. So, the otherwise great GTX 670 is going back.
