Hey guys,

I've installed my second GTX580, (Both are 015-P3-1580-AR) first and third slot on an X58 FTW3 I used the bridges which came with the mobo.  1200 PSU, I have connected both the 3 way and 2 way sli bridges both upside up and upside down. I have played with the nvidia panels, bios has been reset, everything and the PC detects the 2 GPUS but does now show as if linked by the bridge.  I have reinstalled drivers and so far no luck.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!

You say, that the "PC detects" the two cards, so I am assuming that you are looking at the device manager snap-in.
What do you see in the Nvidia control panel under "View Sli and Physx configuration" SLI has to be enabled in this screen.

No Sir, i have gone through all the settings on nvidia control panel and no sli information is provided. When i see the physx configuration tab it shows the two gpus but no sli green bar underneath.

Go into device manager and then to the properties of the network card. Then select the driver tab at the top. Once there click the roll back driver button. Once that is done reboot the pc and you should get the SLi option. There have been issues with the Microsoft updated network card driver causing SLi not to work.

    ^this

Then go here http://www.evga.com/support/download/default.aspx to download the latest network drivers for your mobo.

Um i dont think im ready for that part yet. If anyone's got more suggestions, please :)

...furthermore, I see that my two GPUs have different BIOS on system information tab on NVidia control panel. Let me know if this has anything to do and how to fix if so.

What drivers are u using? I have had the same problem with drivers released after the 270.61 whql. I was using drivers 275.33. My pc would detect both cards, turn sli on but in certain games, not utilize sli what so ever. So i went back to 270.61 and havent had a problem since then. Hope this helps.

Different Nvidia BIOS's have no effect whatsoever on SLI or performance. My cards each have a different BIOS....
The videocard BIOS is not your issue

I'm waiting with bated breath to see if you can resolve this issue without a Windows reinstall. This looks like the classic Microsoft network card updated driver issue. If the roll back driver option didn't do the trick then the person more then likely did driver update to the Microsoft driver update which can not be fixed with the roll back driver option. Only other thing a person could try is find the default Microsoft network card driver that came on the installation cd and install those. I had found them at one time off the net, but I don't know where I saved them too and it was a pita to find them on the net.

Sooooo, After a long troubleshooting session with Maniacvvv, whose help I greatly appreciate,  we removed and reinstalled drivers for the graphics card, motherboard; LAN drivers, considered the possiblity of a conflicting MSI afterburner installation, as well as trying both the 3 way and 2 way bridges in all possible ways, we were not able to have my system detect the SLI configuration.

We then moved to hardware troubleshooting and switched the GPUS between slot 1 and 3 and proceeded accordingly but the problem still persisted. After all these attempts with no luck but having already made sure the basic drivers and installation were properly accomplished I decided to finally work around the many cables interrupting access to the 2nd slot in order to consider the possiblity of a faulty 3rd slot, I connected the two GPUS right on top of each other with the 2 way flexible bridge, booted up and there it was. SLI capability, now accessible.

I will definitely try again to plug the GPU back on the 3rd slot and make sure that it is sitting properly this time now that when I plugged it in the 2nd slot I thought I had broken my motherboard when it clicked and fit right into place. I will make sure to follow this procedure on the third slot and will report back to let you guys know whether it could have been a faulty slot or if the  Realtek drivers, MSI Afterburner or Nvidia drivers were at fault due to an improper installation!

Stay tuned and Thanks a whole lot to everyone & Maniacvvv!

Great job bro, was a pleasure to meet you.... CONGRATS! you did all the work

At least now you know the cards, drivers, sli bridge and Windows are fine...
That leaves just the slot or how the card is seating in it with those front panel wires

Re:GTX 580 SLI NOT WORKING BUT DETECTED 2011/09/05 00:09:41 (permalink)
Hey guys, so, after playing and benchmarking for a while with the GPUs on slots 1 and 2, I decided to try again to fit the cards in the third slot as I felt very uncomfortable with GPU1's fan at full speed trying to get some air from the very tiny gap between the two GPUs. I plugged in GPU 2 in slot three made sure it clipped and seated properly. I put as much pressure as I could and as far in deep as it could go and then tightened the screw and used both bridges again but no luck.

The computer starts up, the GPUs fans start spinning they are both detected in device manager without any problems, both are also detected on nvidia control panel and their appropriate information is displayed in system information and any software that tries to pull information on my peripherals BUT no SLI option is given on the physx screen in nvidia's panel.

Im still trying to understand why this slot would seem to be operational but not assist with the SLI detection. I believe my X58 FTW3 (768) has no jumpers since I have looked at it inch by inch as well as no indications in the manual so this should not be the problem.

I have also found several threads in different places including here in EVGA where they state the same problem I am having. One person even rma'd the mobo and the second mobo had the same issue. Something tells me it has to do with software.

Just wanted to keep you guys updated and if anyone finds the miracle so many of us need, please share!

Soo, went out and purchased windows 7 since i was going to upgrade anyways in one or two months since vista had started acting up pretty badly, just to remove any doubt with vista, i reformated and performed a clean install of windows vista, then installed the motherboard drivers from the cd which came with it and then the latest gpu drivers from nvidia with both cards on slot 1 and 3. Right after the restart requested by the drivers the gpus were both identified right away and sli option available. I am currently installing windows 7 and hope to get the same results and have this issue solved again with a good OS and finally enjoy the upgrade!

Hope this thread helps a few!

Just make sure you do not let Windows update the network card driver and you should be good. I use the default network card driver that comes with Win 7 and they work fine, no need to update them.

Funny thing is after it was noticed it wasnt hardware failure i proceeded to let windows vista update all drivers including two network drivers and even after unplugging the cards and switching bridges, it still allowed SLI. might not be the network drivers after all.

Microsoft may have fixed this. This was an issue over a year ago. You probably updated to the bad drivers back then and never knew they threw a wrench in the SLi workings as you were not running SLi. I hardly hear of this issue anymore, but it still shows up now and then. I still won't let Windows update the network card driver anymore after that debacle.
