So I bought the ultra wide screen LG 34UM95 34 inch 21:9 3440 x 1440 display. What... a... beauty...

I was fully expecting to have to upgrade my tried and true 4-way SLI GTX 480 hydro coppers (nvidia max res. spec 2560x1660), but I was pleasantly surprised to see the GTX 480 to support that native res of 3440 x 1440 at 30hz over the 4 year old mini HDMI cable.

This monitor supports HDMI at 50 hz (displayport at 60hz) so I was still planning on upgrading to 290X, but then I was able to actually get 50 hz refresh to work via custom resolutions.

So now I'm in a bit of of conundrum, should I milk my GTX 480s a while longer and cancel the 290X and lose 10 hz of refresh rate (gtx 480 has no display port tech) to wait for the next big thing from Nvidia or AMD?

Or... proceed going the 290x route? looking at the powercolor 290x water cooled units....

It could prove difficult to get an unbiased answer/ opinion to your question.  Only you can decide that.  And now that you know you can use the cards you have, and if you're happy with the performance, you have options now...

Extremely jealous on that monitor ....

but anyways , the 480's are beasts- I have my son still running them in his rig ,so I think you could hold off if you need to ...but the 290x are quite nice cards for the money. - & from my comparisons of using both Nvidia & AMD cards, I have found the AMD to produce better colors/picture quality versus the Nvidia cards .
They both have their pluses and minuses - if you aren't hurting for the money, give the 290x a try - if you don't like it you should have no problem selling it off.

since the 480's are working fine for you I would wait for the next big release so you can check things out and then decide what to upgrade too.

If you're happy...wait. If not, then upgrade.

I would plug along for now with the 480's cause they really are no slouches and def skip the Nvidia 8xx cards and whatever AMD will call there next line, 3xx?, since those lines will just be cut downs of what will come out for there refresh after, the Nvidia 9xx and AMD 4xx or 3x5. If you buy into those new chips that drop shortly you'll probably feel ripped off down the line when they drop prices and refresh, like they've been doing since 2006 at least.
