I learned today that the #3_x4 slot should be used for a dedicated PhysX card and not the #2_x8 slot, thereby allowing the #1 slot the full use of x16 for the GPU. I built my new system with Fermi in mind, and I'm thinking of using my GTX 260 for PhysX, but I'm wondering if the GTX 260 will be too much for a x4 slot.

Yes it will work, and for physx it should be fine. having the 260 run in a 4x slot will hurt its performance, but for just physx it shouldnt cause any problems.

darkpit Hello, Wait a minuit, I have 2 x 260 in slot# 1 and the 2nd in slot# 3 on EVGA x58 SLI Classified, should I change the one in slot# 3 to #2? Appreciate comments Pit The OP is talking about a P55 motherboard, some of those boards have a PCI-E x16 slot with x4bandiwdth running off the P55 chipset instead of the CPU PCI-E Controller, due to the P55 chipset being connected via a DMI interconnect the speed is not really suitable for a rendering graphics card and is intended for Dedicated PhysX card or any other card that doesnt need a super fast connection like a Soundcard or WiFi card etc. On the E760 Classified however you will want your cards in PCI-E x16 slots 1 and 3 because they will give full x16 bandwdith, its not really an issue for GTX 260's as they dont need more than x8 bandwidth but for future cards those will be the best slots to use. if its the E759 Classified then PCI-E x16 slots 1 and 2 would have full x16 bandwidth to both cards but so would slots 1 and 3. For the E762 PCI-E x16 slots 1,3,5,7 give full x16 bandwidth so you could use any combination of those slots on that board.

So I just got a EVGA GTX 770 SC. I'm running an Asus P877V-LK SLI/Crossfire MB. So I have 3 pci-e slots. I'm going to put the new 770 in in the first slot, second slot empty and put a GTX 460 in the 3rd x4 slot for dedicated PhysX. Are you saying this will work fine and give me the full 16x bandwidth in slot 1?

Yes I'm running the same 2 cards, slot 1 (16x) and 3 (4x) on my Z68 SLI board as well. 16x on 770 4x on 460

Wow, blast from the past. So folks are still using PhysX cards? I gave up awhile ago realizing that the 260 didn't really add much. Are games better at PhysX these days with a dedicated card? I'm still holding on for an 800 card...probably the second best. I bet my vanilla 570 could make a good PhysX card.

There are a lot of games that use NVidia PhysX. I can't paste the link here yet, but if you go to NVidia's website and look up PhysX you'll seen a pretty good list of game that use it. I have a couple like Metro 2033 and Last Light. I've run them with and without PhysX and there is a big difference between the 2. Running with PhysX is so much more realistic as far a the overall graphics and what you see with it. I don't know quite how to explain except to say that while I don't play games with PhysX very often, if you have the capability to run a dedicated PhysX card, why not do it. Not that much drain on the system at all.

I have Metro 2033, to be honest, I've only played the beginning...it was kind of tough. I really need to revisit the game, as the story seemed good too. I did play around with the benchmark for awhile, and that is when I decided the 260 didn't add much performance for the power it was consuming. It seems like modern day cards are doing all what PhysX needs...although, I may be wrong here. Low power consumption (with performance) is what rings in my book.

Yeah, a 260 running Metro 2033 with PhysX on is pushing that card to or over what it can do for that game. If you use your 570 as the main card and your 260 as dedicated PhysX in the 4x slot, you would really enjoy the game. It's pretty good and so is metro last light. They are both pretty hard and that makes them even better to me. As far as power consumption, the new cards like my 770 need a minimum of 600 watt power supply just for it. I'm running a 750 watt and it runs my whole system just fine without pushing it. So I would say that the new cards are power hungry, but worth it. BF4 recommends at least a GTX 660, but it doesn't use NVidia PhysX . All new games use PhysX of some kind. but it is part of the code for the game and doesn't require a PhysX card or software.

dedicated PhysX cards work better then you think they do guys, even with modern cards, here is my results on mafia II with my 770 alone, and 460 running with it http://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2125809 It helped a bit in Borderlands 2, Mass Effect 2 and 3, Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light as well.

I was running 2 760 sc's and then tried to pop in my 260 as a dedicated physics card. No go. Stripped the drivers and the board would not see the pair of 760's, only the 260 in slot #3. On my noard its slot 4 for physics, so that may be it. Dang PSU is in the way in my small case so it snot really an option.

I wouldn't bother. I did some benchmarking and testing with Batman Arkham City, using my GTX 680 SC and a 9800 GTX+ as a PhysX card. The 9800 is just a step below a GTX 260. It actually hurt my FPS performance when I ran the PhysX card. With the 9800 as PhysX: http://steamcommunity.com...ledetails/?id=33797571Without: http://steamcommunity.com...ledetails/?id=33797572Now maybe with a 460 or higher, it might helps some. Also, notice that the original post is from 2010 - 4 years ago. At that time, a 260 might be a decent PhysX card, but not so much today.
