Hello, I am on my third gt740sc. My first one lasted a few months playing fallout 4 and other games. Then I thought it died. The second one wouldn't work, now the third only partially works through the Dvi to vga to component adapter. If I am lucky enough to blindly log in, I can press alt ctrl and delete and get an options screen. If I click on task manager, the picture goes blank.the screen with the options has a green part on the right hand part of the screen, and the background of the options is black. The letters are purple. I can't get the mini hdmi port to show anything at all.Even though I don't get a picture, the computer is on and the fan for the video card works. Could this still be a power supply problem even though I had been using it for months with no problems? Thanks for any help.      Dell Inspiron 3847, Win. 8.1, 8gb ram, intel i3

Although a power supply can give out at any time I don't think it is your problem here since everything else is powering up. The video board only draws 64 watts, From your description it really sounds like the VRAM on the video board has failed or is failing. The first thing I would try is a different video cable, then a fresh installation of the latest video drivers from nVidia: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Use Custom(Advanced) Install and not the Express install. Uncheck all boxes except for graphics driver, PhysX, and audio driver if you are getting audio through an HDMI cable to your monitor's speakers. Check the box for 'Perform a Clean Install' and then remember to reboot when finished. Report back with the results after a fresh video driver install.

Thanks for replying. I am using onboard video right now. If I install the latest NVidia drivers, will my card automatically find and use the NVidia drivers upon startup with the card? I used to have the NVidia icon in the lower right portion of my screen, but it is not there with the onboard video. Thanks again.

The nVidia icon won't show up until the drivers are installed or if it is 'hidden' under your Taskbar Properites. Open your Device Manager and make sure the GT740 is listed under 'Display Adapters'. If it is installed and is listed in your Device Manager go ahead and try installing the drivers. If it has a yellow triangle next to it open the Properties Panel and see if Error 43 is listed. If it is then the video board has failed. If the GT740 isn't listed use the drop-down menu under 'Actions' and then scan for hardware changes and see if it shows up then.

Will I be able to install it with onboard video? For the heck of it, I tried to install GeForce experience and it wouldn't  let me with on board graphics. I am slowly downloading the newest drivers.

I should have been clearer. The only display I get with the card is if I use cntrl alt delete. All options cut the display off. I may be able to properly shut computer down with that screen and make the card show up in device manager with on board graphics.I'll try that.

I can turn it off with the card but it doesn't show up in device manager after I shut down.

First, GFE won't work with the Intel onboard graphics. It needs a nVidia video board installed. There might be a setting in your BIOS to switch from internal graphics or IGP to the video board or PCI, PEG, PCI-E. Different manufacturers use different terminology. See if you can try the video board in another PC. If you don't have a friend with a PC you can borrow then a local PC shop might test it for you. My Dell automatically switched from internal graphics to the video board as soon as I plugged it in but not all PCs will act that way. If your internal graphics are also giving you odd colors I would suspect a bad video cable or bad monitor also.

Hello oligopolycorp,

I took a look at your account and did see that the two previous cards you sent to us, did pass testing. I did not see any mention if you have tried the card in another system or with another power supply, but this is precisely what I would recommend doing.

Gosh, the last time I used component cables was from my set top cable box to my old 28" Panasonic tube type TV. I occassionally had to twist and reseat the cable ends but that was it. I bought my component cables from Walmart. They are pretty sturdy, around 1/4" think with full sheilding and a thick rubberized coating. They're still going strong as audio cables from the RCA jack on my new JVC HDTV to my Home Theater System.
