This is an awesome effort! This just goes to show that the EVGA Family is like non other. Thanks to slayer_27 for introducing me to this thread. Owe you one, my friend. To be honest, I dont even know what is folding. I only know that it has something to do with keeping your computer on 24/7. But for Afterburners, ill start folding; now. Anybody please brief me more on folding. (too bad i cant have my computer on 24/7. Is there any other alternatives?) Thanks in advance! (i just hope none of us spill the beans.)

(i just hope none of us spill the beans.) Fundamental biology concept: Protein folding is the process by which our bodies are made. A string of amino acids (literally a small line of them, which you get from breaking down meats/proteins) lines up. Then the string folds in half, in a sort of 2D way ("secondary structure"). Then it folds the other way, as in, the 3D way ("tertiary structure"). Finally, what was once a single long string congeals every which way like a tangled ball of yarn ("quaternary structure"), depending on how the molecules making up the amino acid string happen to chemically attract/repel. This fourth stage can create enormous complexity and leads to all sorts of subtle yet different shapes, much better known as... drum roll... protein. Proteins make up your cell walls, and your cells make you. Ta-da! The way proteins fold is strongly influenced by your DNA, even a small change in your DNA can cause a small variation in the structure of your proteins, and a small difference can cause cells to go out of control: cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc. Folding @ Home uses computing power to try to figure out in what ways proteins incorrectly "fold" -- if researchers can understand this, they can correct it or prevent it and cure major diseases. Obviously when dealing with strings hundreds of molecules long (there are only about 20 amino acids, but they can form thousands of different proteins within a person or population depending on how the long strings are assembled) there is a LOT of different ways a protein could slightly misfold (i.e., not follow the directions given by DNA). This means that billions of different structures have to be simulated and analyzed by computers. Rather than trying to buy billions and billions of dollars worth of super computers, Stanford University (and some other academic institutions) offer a small downloadable client allowing you to crunch all the different configurations a protein may take. When you finish crunching that protein, you upload the results to Stanford's server and start a new one. The aggregate total is statistically analyzed by Stanford medical researchers. Any person who Folds stands a chance of crunching that *one* protein that explains a certain type of cancer. Some Fold 24/7 so they can continuously upload and download protein work units, some do it when they're surfing the web, etc. Lots of reasons to fold: self-preservation, avenging the death of loved ones who die of these diseases, contributing to the good of us all... and especially a cool excuse to build more computers There are only so many hours you can play games before you run out of ways to use that snazzy hardware. Many crunch only on their CPUs, but GPUs are drastically faster and shoveling data and have recently jacked up the research rates. Here's info on the team, less complicated explanations, guides, etc: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=83613

I understand the folding for AB thing, but why don't we just fold to fold. Afterall, during the last EVGA folding giveaways I wasn't even in the list. I fold 24/7 on my PS3 while not using it and am a member of the EVGA group, but my folding points do not total to my points here. I wont ever get a prize for what I do with my PS3, but I still do my part.

OK..... Wow..... Overwhelmed... This is by far the best medicine to see. I am beyond words really. Thank you all. It is amazing to see those that fight for just a few hundred a day all the way to major contributors and back to never have or used too, are stepping up. Still shaking and very hard to type. I am overwhelmed with emotion. Thank you all. Thank you EVGA for allowing this and for giving us this type of environment to give. WOW....... I will never be able to give back as much of all this. Thank you. I will try of course! Just give me time. I feel guilty even getting online. Still have not actually played any games on the Eyefinty sitting in my game room. This outpouring of support has made me feel much better and has moved me greatly. Please do not misunderstand me. This loss is beyond any expression of words. My Son and I worked together on the computers and was one of only three Father/Son things we did. So it is a struggle for me.... Thank you all so much, and I assure you when my wife is strong enough I will show her this amazing support.....

Afterburner I'm a little upset someone tipped you off, but am really glad this helped even just a little bit. After all the years you've been helping out here and always being a positive, encouraging, and funny voice we all just wanted to show that we've got your back no matter how rough things get. It is really moving that your son saved several lives as an organ donor. I would add one small thing to that -- as people have asked what's new today, I tell them about how a friend's son died, and how a community of anonymous people stepped in to do everything they could to help. Every person I tell about your son's story gets very quiet and even a little teary. Everything that has happened to your family is devastating, but it has reminded a lot of people just what good there is in the world. In that sense, your son (and all the good you personally have done around here) has created something inspiring out of a heartbreaking situation. I hope that eases the loss
