Hi everyone,

Forgive my ignorance here, just bought a 6GB 780 to replace my 560 Ti and my first port of call was cranking all my game settings up to ultra, as you do. Been a bit surprised by the results - it hasn't been shrugging off games like I hoped it would at 1080p.

I tried Watch Dogs, though obviously the problems with that game on PC are very well known at this point, but I also tried Assassin's Creed IV and Batman: Arkham Origins, both of which dropped frames, and that's even with limiting ACIV to a maximum of 30FPS (B:AO was at 60FPS instead).

Is something in my setup bottlenecking the card, or have I just chosen bad PC ports to test?

My setup is as follows:
6GB EVGA GTX 780 SC ACX
i5 2500K OC'd to 4.4GHz
Crucial Ballistix Elite 8GB DDR3 RAM
Antec SG-650 650W Power Supply

Windows 8.1
Latest WHQL Nvidia drivers (337.88)

Thanks for your help!

Hi and welcome to the forums!

Both AC and Batman all maxed out including PhysX are hard on just one 780 even at 1080p. For AC to go closer to 60 (hard frame cap) you need to disable v-sync. For a better frame rate on my system (sig) i've put PhysX on normal and use SMAA for AA (I prefer this against other forms of AA in this game as it's the only one that doesn't blur the picture more than it should).

For Batman you should get slowdowns only in fights when you activate those electric gloves (again PhysX related frame drops..). I've used 4x MSAA again for better framerate opposed to 8x. Your card has more power than mine but play around with settings and see what you like as in fps and image quality.

For Watch Dogs try to use these settings from this review .
Depending on your cards boost you should get similar framerates to what you see there.

Its now proven that Watch Dogs has a game coding bug, the extra vram doesn't solve the issue, only helps it a bit.

As for AC and Batman, these are 2 demanding games, a sinlge 780 will not be able to max these games out. PhysX should be set to low or off. Even with 2 780 ti's in SLI, I have PhysX set to "normal" on AC on 1080p if that gives you an idea. If you don't have it already, install GFE(Geforce Experience), its pretty darn good for automatically optimizing your settings for games supported. THe only game so far its been wrong on(and its probably not wrong due to game programming bug) is Watch Dogs, as it currently has textures and AA settings too high currently. But again, that's probably due to game coding bug, not GFE itself, because once the first patch is released I will assume the hitching issue will be eliminated for the most part.

Unless you have textures set to medium, no way your playing smooth as butter. And this is assuming a single 1080p monitor too. Temporal SMAA or SMAA, or even no AA, the game has a known software bug where there is a hitching/stutter issue.

    Thanks for replying!

Alright, so it's PhysX and TXAA that might be bogging things down huh? I'll tweak a few settings and report back!

If you want MONSTER 1080p performance on ALL the games with all the settings maxed or nearly maxed playing at 60fps or higher, a pair of 780's in SLI as a minimum. A single won't cut it.

I copied someone elses settings and they are everything maxed except AA
temporal AA  is used and in the NVCP i clamp LOD, add FXAA and turn off texture optimize
these are the settings the guy on youtube gave me and it plays like i said "smooth as butter"
driving is 45-50 fps and walking around hacking and doing assorted things is a avg of 60 fps.
I saw his watch dogs walkthrough vid and was impressed he had it so smooth with a good FPS and asked him for the settings on his gtx 780 sc.
I have no reason to BS nor the time. I am too busy enjoying my favorite game yet!

It doesn't matter what settings you copied, there is a software bug, if your textures are on high or ultra, you will get hitching/stuttering. Feel free to post up a vid though to prove otherwise. ;)

Gotta watch this on Youtube with speed set to 2x. It makes the video run at almost 60fps!
