The CC only lasts what, 5-6 days? Is that really going to kill your month points? IMO if 5 days hurts you that much you had no chance of getting the 250k for that month anyway. I plan on folding for the CC regardless of the 5 bucks I might lose just because it is fun and we need to kick the OCN.

My bad, I thought it was something that lasted for awhile, I asked before about getting instructions but did not get a response. I did not have the chance to participate last year so I do not know the paremeters.

It's fine. Just general info as I figured you would not be the first concerned about this. Not trying to call you out or anything.

I like this milestone idea and can't wait for it to start so I can get some new case badges and 2 backplates for my 260s.

Cool man. I just registered and need to complete the process when I get my email. I thought they only had back plates for the 275's right now, am I missing something? I would like to get a back plate for one of my 295 dual PCB cards.

I like the folding details for the upcoming year thats totally doable on my setups, 250K a month, and 3 million a year is good.  The summer months are gonna be a bit tough though folding on Hot Days, but thats what A/C is for at least.

The only down side that I see on this method is even if you hit 3 million before the year is over, you still have to fold 250K a month for it to count, so thats going to delay alot members upgrades that need the evga bucks for it. (Understandable though since alot stopped at 1 million this year)

Thanks for the information shane.

Just the 275s but it will fit a certain version of the C 216, of which both of mine are.

Re:Folding@EVGA Year 3 EVGA Bucks Promotion!! 2010/02/16 15:47:58 (permalink)
I enjoy folding. I like the nuances of figuring out how to maximise output and things like that. And ultimately I find the concept and science behind both distributed computing and protein folding interesting. But I am a student and my finances are tight to say the least. As such last year I was really only able to fold while I knew that the EVGA bucks were offsetting the power bill. This will change years into the future when I am more secure and able to contribute more consistently.

Anyway my point is, it's not particularly hard (for me) to slam 25 000 PPD for 10 days and then not do it the rest of the month - I'm just not in a position to do more. But doing so would not be difficult for those that only came for the million and left. I just don't see this new promo as a way to ward off that sort of behaviour at all. And for those that got the bucks and stopped altogether rather than going back to another team, this new promo might put them off in it's tedium. That could potentially be hundreds of people who would have contributed at least 3 million.

So having said that - why would it be any different to just pump out the 3 000 000 straight up? Arguably a straight up 3 million is far more valuable to Standford than the same amount over the course of the year. Also I can't fathom why it would not be reasonable for people in unsuitable climates to go into overdrive and compensate in cooler months, which they now can't. And as others have mentioned having to wait the whole 12 months to collect up all the bucks significantly diminishes the perceived reward in my opinion - it's just kind of impractical.

Wow. I just read the link page a little better. How incredible that EVGA contributed $50,000 to us for folding. I am pretty sure most of that went to additional folding gear. That is a lot of money.

I knew that there would be some folks unhappy about having to do 'endurance' folding to get the award, but in the end it will work out  for the best. While we will likely lose some folks who were planning to fold a short time, we will probably gain new loyal team members. That will serve us better in the long run, and serve Stanford better to have committed long term folders than those who would only fold a month and go away.

I feel like the smaller contributors are getting shafted not only would I have to fold almost the entire year, I have to get 200,000 more than last year, for 40 bucks less...

I have a feeling many smaller contributors such as myself will walk away, its just not worth that much time, I would have gladly folded 4 months nonstop to get the million before summer hits, b/c summer folding in Florida is nasty...

I was originally drawn to the EVGA team for the bucks, but I stuck around because the forum community here is great and extremely helpful and interesting all round.

And the promotion is a cool thing to do, attracts good will and all.... but make no mistake, it would seriously surprise me if by 'giving away' $50 000 they have not made that many, many, many times over by attracting new customers. Especially in the long run. It's marketing really. Someone who came to EVGA for the bucks who didn't normally care what brand their gear was and gets a $400 card for $300... EVGA isn't giving away $100, they're making $300. And if that customer is impressed with the product and comes back for other parts, then they have made thousands and lost nothing. I don't fault them for it, it's clever business.

As far as promoting folding with the new promo, it seems like the people who are most enthused to be folding all year round are the people that were already doing that anyway. Seems like there are a lot of people who are prepared to walk away over it though.

I too was originally drawn because of the points, I said to myself well EVGA has given me good hardware in the past (socket 939 amd board still working to this day) I might as well fold for them, the points was a bonus.

I wasn't necessarily "ready to walk away" it just seems like it rewards the large contibutrors a lot more than the small contributors. a small contributor that makes around 6,000 ppd would have to work the entire year only to make 60 bucks, whereas a large contributor (some of you) would only need to fold for one day to meet the entire months milestone, someone who makes 250,000 ppd for example. I think the majority of the team makes up the small contributors, it should have focused more towards them.

Yes and no. You have to look at marketing money as a trade off. Focusing that much money on one small sector of business (1400+ active folders) along with the folding milestone giveaways that probably come close to the $50,000, puts a lot of marketing money in a small community for marketing. So approximately $100,000 in money directed in marketing to a group of 1400 people that come and go. So they have to ask themselves is it money well spent to focus $71.50 per person in a marketing campaign? What is the average sale $$$ for that group. They have to sell a bucket full of stuff to start paying back for the money spent per person. What if the folks use their $100 to buy something that is only $130 like a GTS 250?
I still say this is extremely generous however you look at it.

Fantastic program. Much easier on those wanting to contribute, but still be careful on the electric bill while maintaining the longevity of the group. Perfect!

Hey Shane, I think sirgrinalot has a valid point, I just checked the team stats on EOC and 80% of our current folders fold less than 6000 PPD and our team average is 5836 PPD. So that means that the vast majority of our team members will not be able to qualify for the 10 EVGA bucks per month. Would somone please verify that I am correct on this.

That is correct.  That said, when we started the promotion last year, only about 30 people would have qualified for the full 100 EVGA bucks in March of 09.  We are expecting the team to try harder.

Yeah, as it stands, exactly 125 people would qualify for the full 120 bucks. However, I totally agree with Shane in that this promotion would motivate many more to increase their folding efforts. I expect that at least 500 people would get at least 100 bucks this year...

OK, being of an innocent mind set, I was looking at it from the perspective that there are a lot of people who would like to fold more but cannot afford to buy the additional hardware needed to meet the 8500 PPD needed for the full rewards. Sorry, my innocent and trusting nature blinding me again to reality and I am not being sarcastic, I see your point of view.

Exactly, like students for example, but luckily I have been saving for a while and will be getting an i7 rig with an EVGA classified motherboard in about 2 months. My output will be 36,000 ppd so I could contribute 1 week out of every month and make the quota.

Re:Folding@EVGA Year 3 EVGA Bucks Promotion!! 2010/02/16 17:46:52 (permalink)
I thought the promotion is also to buy evga hardware and contribute to f@h too. it makes perfect sense, buy an evga card to get more evga bucks for you next evga card. the monthly system prevents abuse too. i am in a situation where i can either output 30K, 10k or 5k per day. my main rig no longer does bigadv for a few reasons but it would suck to end up with 249,999 points. i am likely to end up making the $10 so it will be a hard push to reach my goal. hopefully i can get my damned linux machine to work or else i dont have a chance.

I agree with Shane and theGryphon, that the goals needed to be raised due to new technology and people making upgrades.  Fermi sits in the range of 15k-20k on one card (supposedly).  This would let someone hit 250k in half a month.  Even if you don't upgrade for half a year to Fermi as an example, you would still get $90 for the year total.  This is outside of using CPU clients or adding GPU's on the cheap.

I admit, not everyone will upgrade, and the new promotion will hurt them.  But there are many many people on this forum who over the next few months will add something new to their system, raising their PPD.  Some will benefit, and some will not, but I think the overall balance will remain the same with the new promotion and how many people finish.

And as a final note, and my own opinion, people need to remember this is charity work.  This is not a job, and you are not being paid to fold away your own money to your detriment.  I will be sad to see anyone leave who feels they can no longer handle the financial burden of the new promotion.  But I am hoping in time if things change you would come back to the team, or just folding in general, to help the cause.

Those of us who can will continue to pursue our goals, and welcome you back to the "fold" when you are able to help once more.

Afterburner

Wait one minute..... This program clearly shows that there are folks working @ EVGA with common since!!! O..... M..... G.....

Fantastic program. Much easier on those wanting to contribute, but still be careful on the electric bill while maintaining the longevity of the group. Perfect!

We should start calling it uncommon sense.

Yeah, as it stands, exactly 125 people would qualify for the full 120 bucks. However, I totally agree with Shane in that this promotion would motivate many more to increase their folding efforts. I expect that at least 500 people would get at least 100 bucks this year...

That number may be down a little, I know my 24h average for a week or so has been 0 from AB folding. But I do see your point.

Please stop deleting WU's.

I know there are many people who couldn't afford better hardware but they're not loosing out much. For example, say a person can produce 3500 PPD each and everyday through the year, and nothing more. Last year, he got his 100 bucks, right? This year, he'd get 60 bucks. I don't think it's too bad. I mean if the purpose is to motivate more people to fold and everybody to fold more, it makes all the sense to up the goal, don't you think? I'm sorry if I'm coming off as a prick, that's not my intention... I'm a poor b45t4rd myself with a bad tech-addiction...

What about the electric bill? Lower end folders can still get 60 bucks for the year and not cry when they open their power bill. Yeah, you could have gotten 60 more bucks, but you would have just paid that in electricity. Even with the promotion. Folding still costs money. The people who put up big numbers put down a lot of money on hardware and energy costs. I think in the end, the promotion is very fair for everyone. Its really flexible compared to the 3 milestones in last years promo. Nobody said you had to get the whole 120
