Has anyone heard whether the [link=mailto:F@EVGA]EVGA[/link] bucks' program will continue through year 9 for folders? I know it's not much, but it is nice to throw the dog a bone now and then. It gives me a little incentive to buy new products.

No announcement yet. We should hear in the next couple days or so. I hope they do continue it, but if the don't it's been a good run and I appreciate what EVGA has done to this point.

I think it is Fair if needed to keep it going.
1.5 million and 2.5 million may be a better upgrade though.

I would have to run one machine with a 750ti graphics card (not OCed) for an average of 25 to 30 days to get to the 1.5 million mark. How about 5 EVGA bucks for 1.0 million folding points, 10 EVGA bucks for 2.0 million points, and 15 EVGA bucks for 4.0 million points. I'd guess that most members don't own a quad SLI rig of all 980 cards.....

Of course, the present tiered structure is fine, as well.

Raise the first goal to 1 mil. and the second goal to 2.5 mil. This way you get a increase of at least 250.000 from older systems and 1.25 mil. from others. Lets face it some people can hit 3 mil. in a day. But it is Evga's program so you can work the numbers anyway you like. Thank you for keeping the program going...

I don't see any issue with 1.5m and 3m, but my system can churn that out in 3 days.

The points have been steady for a few years now. Most folders should be able to afford a decent upgrade if they have been folding for a while, and if the points go up, they could possibly add a card in to help boost their production.

These are exactly the numbers I was thinking would make sense for the upcoming year.  Granted as a folder I would personally like the thresholds to be as low as possible making them easier for myself to hit, but we also have to recognize that this shortchanges our total team production as the 'bucks folders can hit the current tiers too easy on the most recent hardware.

The 1.5M/3M is historically in line with the general folding effort required to meet the tiers with current hardware.  Given the large increase in PPD of current hardware, which has been available for a while, and new hardware is expected later this year I see no reason to deviate from these numbers.  Yes, there will inevitably be those claiming that it is unfair that they can no longer hit these marks with outdated hardware - that happens every year. An idea that has sometimes been used in the past is to give the lower tier a break in points - something like a 1.25M, 3M tiers.

At the end of the day I will be happy if EVGA continues this incredibly generous promotion in any way!

    Thanks for the response Rob,

1.5/3 sounds fine. I can see a few folks out there that fold a few days, grab the bonus cash and shut down until next month, but for the most part the top 75 or 80 folders are fairly dedicated to the task. Everyone here, including myself, surely  appreciate the gesture by EVGA.

The t-shirt issue has been brought up several times in the past and the primary problem is that there is not sufficient demand for a folding t-shirt such that EVGA could order them in large enough quantities to achieve a reasonable price point.  But for the record, I too would like a EVGA folding t-shirt.

While I understand chrebean1's position, I agree that the numbers should go up.  I too also support 1.5M & 3M, but I would also like to request again as has been done in previous years a very high level goal.  Perhaps 10M.  1.5M and 3M are not unreasonable with a single GTX 970, it could be reached in about 10 days.  But the goal should not be to meet minimum goals with decent hardware.  It should be about reaching for the stars.

What I would propose is an annual tshirt giveaway for top tear folders.  Say you have to put in 10M a month for 10 months out of 12 months, you can get an custom tshirt from EVGA as your thank you and extra advertisement for both EVGA and F@H.

If we look at median and average number for active folders we get the following
    Median PPD=42,624 and PPM=1,278,720
    Average PPD=143,831 and PPM=4,314,951
Of course median numbers are a more accurate picture of the "average" folder's productions. Given these numbers I think the current goals are adequate.

I would argue that any folding rewards EVGA is generous enough to offer should be designed with forward-looking incentivizing structure.  Setting the bar at a point that most people can easily hit (currently many can hit it with minimal effort) does not achieve this.  While we have a tremendous amount of diversity and love to celebrate the contribution of every folder, the basis should be the PPD produced by a reasonable investment in current hardware and a reasonable amount of sustained effort through the month to hit the goals.

    Re: Folding year 9 2016/02/27 14:06:42 (permalink)
Granted, it's easy to meet the present tiered goals or 750K and 1.5 million points. The new nVidia Maxwell chip architectures allow greater GPU computing levels while using less energy, with subsequent energy bill savings. Additionally, increasing the point thresholds would positively benefit Stanford U. and other researchers, by receiving more computing time from Team EVGA members trying to attain any new point thresholds.

But, personally speaking, the main motivation in this endeavor is to eradicate Alzheimer's, various cancers, and other physical maladies, by voluntarily allocating computing time to crunch protein folding simulations. The secondary motivation is to earn EVGA bucks toward future personal upgrades. Since there is no tax deduction benefit to voluntary computing time allocation (and the energy bill along with it), earning the EVGA bucks is a welcome, motivating, ancillary benefit to all of us. EVGA is to be commended for their involvement in the program, and incentivizing us to participate accordingly.

That being said, and reiterating what I mentioned in a previous post, I agree with troy that a new tiered points structure should "raise the bar" to foster new goal levels, but, in my opinion, new levels shouldn't be way out of reach for the majority of the EVGA folding community. Healthy competition between EVGA and other folding teams through higher point totals, while serving the common good in medical research, is a great reason to push all of our rigs a little harder.

I think those numbers are more than fair. Doubly-so considering what Pascal & Polaris are probably going to do to performance figures.

1.5 and 3 million sound good to me, I like the idea of an extra high tier, but then people might complain that it isn't possible to reach it without expensive hardware and electrical bills.

I appreciate EVGA continuing the program but higher goals to reach is out of the question for me. I'm not made of money and feeding my electric company is not on my bucket list. It's hard enough trying to pay my electric during the Summer and Winter months while using my electric heat and AC. I Fold when I can for as long as I can when I have extra money. As far as saying yipee yahoo it's going to benefit Stanford I have to ask what has Stanford ever done to recognize the contributions that come from the Folding community? Has anyone ever seen or heard Stanford say, "Thank you, we couldn't have done it without the help of the Folding at Home community"?

+1. I have to watch my electricity costs and here in Europe utility costs are higher. An increase to 1 million and 2 million would be better.

Based off PPD averages for active folders right now only half would make the cutoff for 1.5 mil and one third would hit the 3 mil mark. I agree with Zuhl, some can't afford high end equipment and ones that could make the cut folding all the time might not be able to spare the money for electricity and thus be limited to the amount of time they can fold.

The EVGA bucks are supposed to be an incentive to upgrade. I know in the two years I have folded, I have earned 240 evga bucks. That is the cost of a 960, which can produce ~115k ppd while sipping power off of a very low PSU.

Boosting the requirement would probably force the hands of some that have been holding onto their bucks.

Many people only fold long enough to get their PPD requirement and then stop for the month. This is easily noticed at the beginning of the month and during folding events with prizes.

Many people only fold long enough to get their PPD requirement and then stop for the month. This is easily noticed at the beginning of the month and during folding events with prizes.

Some also run BOINC Projects that use the GPU as well, lets not leave them out.

An increase in points would be great for the team, but I know myself, my power bill would skyrocket if I had to fold during peek and and mid peak prices.  My system while folding pulls over 310 watts of power.  I use it to keep my room warm at night during winter, and it does a great job!

We have indeed decided to continue to support the folding community.  Our folding pages have been updated : http://www.evga.com/folding/promo.asp.  Due to hardware advancements, increased efficiency, and user feedback, we have moved the levels to 1.5M and 3M.  Thank you all again for helping to support the research advancement toward curing disease.

    Thank You,
    Rob

PS. Please don't forget to submit any points for Year 8 before March 31st, 2016.

I will continue to Fold through the night in order to reach my 60 million point milestone for my 60th birthday. After that I have to say goodbye. You have placed the limits way beyond the benefits to someone on limited income like me. Thank you for your continued support to the community in its fight against cancer.
