Hey guys. I'm hoping you can help me here. I've read from a few sources that my chip can be overclocked up to 4.2ghz. I must admit, I've very green to this overclocking business. I've read a few guides online but some of the fields in my bios are different to what's listed in the guides. Here's the equipment I'm running and hopefully one of you can help:

i7-950 (D0)
Mobo part number: 121-BL-E756-TR (EVGA X58 SLI Micro)
I'm running 24 GBs of Patriot memory pg34g1600el

Here are the guides I was trying to follow:  forums.evga.com/EVGA-X58-Overclocking-Guide-m20028.aspx

overclock dot net/t/538439/guide-to-overclocking-the-core-i7-920-or-930-to-4-0ghz

Thanks in advance

It's been too long ago, so I don't recall some of the BIOS settings or how exactly I had my 950 set up.  I can give you most of my settings that I had written down.  Some tweaking and testing on your part will be needed I'm sure.  Always keep an eye on core temps while stress testing.

I used a 188 Bclock with a 23 multiplier.  Turbo disabled which netted my CPU clock speed at 4313MHz.
My Vcore used for this was 1.35625v set in BIOS with Vdroop disabled.
I ran my QPI and IOH voltage at 1.20v and my VTT voltage at +200mV.
I ran my memory speed at 1500MHz.  I don't recall the ratio. 2:8 or 2:10 maybe??

Here's my stability test pic...

Hey Bdary thanks for the info. I entered all the values you mentioned and unfortunately I couldn't get it to POST. At first restart the motherboard gave an error code of 63 but after restarting again, it displayed an error code of 62. I've attached some screenshots of my bios after I entered in all the settings. The only thing I added that you didn't mention was the memory timing.

If you look at your 1st pic, you'll notice that you're running a memory frequency setting with a 2:12 ratio which shows 1600MHz.  But since you're using a Bclock of 188 instead of the stock 133, you're actually trying to run your memory at over 2200MHz.  You need to reduce that ratio to 2:8.  Then with your Bclock of 188, your ram should be running at ~1500MHz.  Also, set your Dimm voltage manually to the spec printed on the sticks.  Example: 1.5v or 1.65v, etc...

Because you're trying to run a high amount of ram, it will be harder to achieve a stable OC this high.  Keep in mind that back in the prime X58 days, 6GB (2GB x3) or 12GB (4GBx3) of ram was the norm.  Running 24GB will put a more stress on your memory controller.

Adjust your memory setting like I suggested above and see how that goes and let me know.  We'll take it from there.  You may need to increase your VTT voltage for that amount of ram.  Possibly vcore as well, but we'll see.

Could you also post a pic of your main "Frequency/Voltage control" page.  That will help refresh my memory on a few things...

Ok I was able to load to windows with the settings you suggested. Bios said it's running 4.32 ghz. That right?

Yep, The BIOS would round it off so, 4.32 is right.  Good to hear that got you up and running...  Now for some stability testing.  Make sure if you crash while testing you get the codes so we can see what voltage(s) might need tweaking.

Your pic is with stock settings I see.  If you have any trouble while stress testing, maybe you could post that same screen pic but with your OC settings.

exactly, with 12GB i could get my 930 full stable to about 4ghz, not to shabby getting a 1.1ghz oc. but with 24GB i got maybe 3.2~3.4 max stable. and that was with good dominator RAM.

Yes those early days of the on die memory controller were hit and miss, especially if wanted to run higher than stock. Mine hates all 6 slots full, does all kinds of weird stuff.

Ok I had to back the multiplier back as it was causing stability issues. It seems to be running ok now. Thats the only change that I made. It's running at 4.13 ghz now. Let me know what you think. I included some more screenshots as well. Also, does extreme cooling need to be turned on? What exactly does it do?

Looking good...  I will offer a suggestion though.  Since you were having stability issue's using a 188 bclock & 23 multi, what I would do is leave the multi at 23 and reduce the bclock instead to achieve about the same CPU clock speed.  It's always harder to get stability the higher the bclock goes.  So if you use a 181 bclock & a 23 multi, you'll end up with about the same clock speed as you have above.  But it's up to you.  Either way will work.

If you find that you're stable at your 4.143 CPU clock and still using the same vcore we talked about above, you could try lowering it a bit more now to see if you can still be stable.  Less vcore, less heat...

Extreme cooling should be left disabled.  It's for LN2 (liquid nitrogen), etc...

Hey bdary. Thank you again for all the help. You've really taught me a lot. As you can see in the other thread I decided to do the Westmere mod on my board and try that route since it was a rather cheap upgrade. Everything seems to be running smooth so far. As far as speed/performance goes, I'm not sure if I'm seeing any differences yet although I can say this, with the Westmere processor, it def runs a lot cooler. BTW, I took your advice about the ram and dropped it down to 12 gigs.
