I would by the w3680 for around 100$ on ebay, it is a hexcore and is fully unlocked.
The xeons are 32nm and overclock better and run cooler than the 45nm CPUs. With DX12 the extra cores may come in handy.
If you plan on doing the mod for sure, no matter what. I would by the w3680 and see if it works without the mod.
I have heard a couple people say that the W3680 and 90 will work in any board that an i7-980x will work in.Since it is a single QPI CPU and is the same CPU as the 980X
I can not say for sure it will. If I had a board like that I would try it.
Worse comes to worst it does not work, get the mod done.
If you do try it, please let me know if it worked or not.

    Hello,
We have another forum user who has said he managed to get the W3690 working with the westmere mod on the X58 linked here http://forums.evga.com/X58-SLI-MB-and-Xeon-W3690-m2367243.aspx
Our official information regarding CPU's that have been verified working are listed here, though we do not have this exact CPU listed: http://www.evga.com/support/motherboard/legacy/
Please let us know if you need any additional information regarding this.

Not sure what you ended up doing but I just bought a W3690 from Ebay and tried to install it in my X58 SLI (132-bl-e758 Rev 1.0). I didn't know about the mod when I tried it so it my machine did not post. It would turn on but nothing would show up on the monitor. I read that updating the bios could help so I reinstalled the previous i7-920 and updated the bios. That didn't change anything so after more digging I found out about the westmere mod. I didn't know for sure if it would work for Rev 1.0 but I didn't really have anything to lose so I attempted the mod and everything works great now. I can confirm that a Xeon W3690 will work on an 132-bl-e758 Rev 1.0 after completing the westmere mod (though I did upgrade the bios previous to doing the westmere mod so that may be beneficial)

    Hello ljport78,
Thank you for sharing that information and good to hear the mod worked for you.  I personally have not done the mod on mine yet though I am considering this since the 990x is just still too expensive, not worth it in my option.

RobertS I am not sure what you are running for a CPU though I think the i7-920 to W3690 was well worth the ~$130 I paid for it (the 990x is going for more than twice that much right now).

Though to tell you the truth I could never complain about the i7-920 it has worked awesome over the years (and didn't really need to upgrade). Buying this machine in 2009 I could never have expected to get the life out of it that I have.

    ljport78,
I was using the 920 (never tried to OC) with a GTX 960ssc. I went to a 975x which I Oc'd to 4.1~ noticed quite a bit of improvement then decided to go to a GTX 1070 and its running pretty good, Firestrike score: http://www.3dmark.com/fs/10830851 .  I agree this board still has some life left in it so might just try to get a westmere or just keep this as is until a new system build.

Thank you for letting us know that with the Wxxx you still needed the mod done.
That is really good info to know.

Just putting it out there, there are x5660 CPUs on ebay for under 50$ I have had mine at 4.2ghz at 1.32V

Also there E5645 hexcores for 29$ and E5649 hexcores for 39$
I had my E5645 at 3.8ghz and my E5649 at 4ghz under 1.33v and 100% load primegrid,  low to mid 50c with H110 series AIO cooler.

EDIT temp was low to mid 50c not F.

    Re: w3690 xeon 2017/02/03 14:55:16 (permalink)
    I have seen the W3680 for under 100$ and x5675 under 70$
The W3680 and 90 are multiplier and BCLK unlocked. The W3670 has a locked multiplier, unlocked BCLK
The x5660 with give you 23 x and the w5675 will be 25 x multiplier.  Multiplier is locked on L, E and X series xeons.
I have had better luck with odd multipliers. My single socket 1366 are all x5660 and I run them 175 x 23  for 4ghz every day crunching.
Try to keep the CPU to 1.35v or less and the VVT / uncore to 1.35v or less on the X, E and l series. The W series can take a little more CPUv.
Also I have found that the xeons like the uncore speed to be 2 x ram speed or one click under 2x ram. They say can be 1.5x but that never worked for me and you will get much better performance at 2x.

Ram speed is limited to 10x I do believe, so lower timings is something to shoot for.
200 buss speed will be 1600 @ 8x. Some of mine run 14xx 7-8-7-24 1T  So depending on your ram.... YMMV
    Hope this helps some.

    Thank you for the BR.

I had to edit OP. I had keep the CPUv to 3.5   Should of read 1.35.
If you go to 3.5 and it posts with out smoking take a screen shot for me!!!
    Thanks again.

O wow, nice gratz on the Blue Ribbon^.  All this talk convinced me to finally Westmere Mod my X58.  I will be definitely trying either the W3690 or the X5690 shortly.

Save your money and get a x5660 or 75.  Unless you are not going to overclock, then get the xxxx90
They all seem to overclock the same. A x5690 most likely will not overclock any better than a x5675. Same with the wxxx. Get the w...80
200 x 25 is 5ghz, very few CPUs can do that on a safe voltage.
4.2-4.4 is not uncommon I expect 4ghz, most can do 4ghz, not heard of many that can't. Most likely a MB issue not the CPU.
Good luck with what ever CPU you do get.

    Hello quadlatte,
If you see rev 1.1 printed on the edge of the board then no modification would be needed. Though if you are not the original owner it is possible the westmere mod could of been performed on the board. If you are uncertain then we can confirm by some pics which you can post here or even email us at support@evga.com .  Please let us know if you need help.

I do apologize for the delay as I just noticed this was a question you had asked. Here is pretty good forum post that shows exactly whats involved if you decide to verify if the mod was done or if perform the mod yourself:  http://forums.evga.com/132BLE758A1-Rev-10-Westmere-Mod-m2153248.aspx

Since mine is a 760 the layout does not look like the one in the link. I do see the listed numbers printed below and to the right of the cpu socket with alot of other numbers, it looks as it may be under the large heatsink for the x58 chip. Can you confirm the location for 760

Thanks, i have found conflicting info on the net, some say one area needs modded and others say two areas need to be done.
Also does it need to be the resistor moved or can i just connect the two pads with solder? Them things are tiny

Ok i can confirm that the 760 needs just one area modded, the area is next to the x58 chip, i left the existing resistor in place and just connected the open one with solder, dropped in a dual qpi westmere and it booted just fine. You do need to remove the NB heatsink to access the area better but it was pretty easy mod to do. Now happily running a 6 core 3680 that i picked up for $80.00 shipped.

in the link that you posted previously had a pic for a 758, it also applies to the 760, mind you the w36xx is a single qpi chip but I did have dual qpi 5620 I tried also and both worked fine. in the pic the area is next to the x58 chip and you do need to remove the HSF to access it, I left the 538 area as it was and just bridged 539 with solder, bit tricky but doable.

Just put a w3680 in a SLI3. Runs @ 45-47C @3.9GHZ  while gaming with air cooling. (EVGA superclocked cooler)This is temperature precision is reporting in the OSD. Passmark scores it higher than 980x or xeon x5680 in benchmarks at same frequency. What a deal for $80.00.

Definitely, running mine at a mild 3.6 with default auto volts, plan on trying for a nice 4ghz everyday oc. I only wish my board supported faster HD speeds but looking into changing that with a pcie add in card soon.

Please report back on how the pcie card goes. I have been looking at those also but have not tried one yet.
