It's been a very real possibility for years now, but it's finally happening: Australians will be required to pay 10 percent GST on every Steam purchase from July this year. The report comes via Kotaku, following an email reportedly sent to developers by Valve.

"The VAT tax amount will be included in the advertised price of your product, just like VAT is currently treated in the EU," part of the email seen by Kotaku reads. "This means the customer will pay the price displayed on the storefront, and the tax will be separated out afterwards."

Australians already pay more for video games, now they will have to pay VAT.

Your assessment seems plausible, specially considering the tax acronym.  VAT 1. a large tank or tub used to hold liquid bullcrap, especially in industry.

Funny how that tank can be used to conceal it in the same way as well.

No need to blame Steam here, VAT was created by gov'ment people.

Presumably Steam have a physical presence in those countries so are forced to add sales tax by law (sales tax, GST, VAT.. amounts to the same thing), or the government(s) have threatened to block Steam if they don't comply. Regardless, it's not as if Steam get to keep the money themselves, that's a government levy. If you live in one of those countries and don't like having to pay sales tax, blame your government - Steam are not at fault.

Iceland have 24% sales tax??? Wow..
