Hello all- First off right now I am fully set up with EVGA everything except the memory sticks (Dominator Corsair).. I have EVGA Micro2, EVGA Classified 1080 GTX DT in SLI, EVGA 1600 Watts power supply all running in CASELABS S5 Black and white inside.. I'm planning on getting bigger Caselabs Mercury S8 due to EVGA stop making M-ATX mobos with Z170 and up..  I went with this caselabs s5 when I was moving around a lot.

So that being said- which is better out of the three mobos I mentioned.. I researched 2011-3v 6 cores is better as opposed to 1151 4 cores. I will also get another video card to run as PHYS-X.. I may get 1080 FTW DT or Maybe scratch it and put in Classified GTX 980 I have now. Let my daughter have other GTX 980 for her gaming right. (have not decided on this one yet)

I have 4 SSD raid for Win 10 OS x64bit and 2x3TB for storage space.

You may ask what will I use this for? Well basically show off the case and purely for gaming only. Occasionally I may do some video but not much since that will be on the other rig underneath, (caselabs pedestal S8), the Gamer Rig. I already know it's OVERKILL but give me some pointers of which mobo and why... I want something like this to run for as long as it'll run. This also will not be OVERCLOCK..

Thanks...

I no longer own a Killer RIG except 2010 Mac Mini with old 30" Cinema Monitor until I build a new one...

My daughter now owns EVGA Z370 Classified, i7-8700K CPU 3.70GHz,  16GB Dominator Corsair, 1650GTX GPU Black n White Case.

What is it being used for? If it is just for gaming I would go with the Z270. If it is being used for actual work where you need the extra CPU horsepower for rendering, computation, encoding, etc... then I would get the X99 or wait for its successor which is coming this year.

Case - Phanteks Enthoo Evolv X

it will really depend on your budget, the x99 will give you more native pcie lanes off the cpu for your sli setup and it has 10 total sata ports plus one m.2 and with the extra pcie you can use more ports , i take it you will keep all 6 drives, the 270 will give you 8 sata ports and while you can run sli the cards will be at x8 each, which in real world means nothing now. you also get optane support and a u.2 ports. also you will need 4 sticks of ram for the x99 and only two for the 270. while those hexa cores sound nice i dont see a big difference in gaming vs a quad in the real world.

EVGA X99 FTW-KILLER + i7-6850K or i7-5930K.
EVGA X99 FTW-K is high end E-ATX motherboard as Classified.
I would overclocked i7-6850K on 4.4GHz to beat AMD 8 core Zen when show up.
That's right decision.

If someone can pick from store i7-6850K cost 550 in Micro Center.

I would hold off building anything right now unless you really can't wait. See how good AMD new CPU will be, also intel will be releasing coffeelake CPU's 2H of 2017.

Yes that's good proposition.
Intel X99 is almost 3 years old, Z170 and Z270 have only 4 cores and that's very very bad.
I don't expect bigger improvement for Intel before Skylake Xtreme.
Skylake Xtreme could be cheaper but up to 50% stronger than Broadwell-EX.

But I think whole Intel process is in danger if rumors about AMD performance are true.
AMD will have a lot of space for improvements, with R7 1900X later, I expect him very soon, some premium black edition model of R7.
Intel x86 is end. After 10 years of domination. Last 3 years we didn't had a lot of improvements and maybe is good if anyone who need upgrade and think about upgrade wait little.
Even owners of DDR3 platforms, if they have Haswell than Kaby Lake will not give them special CPU performance improvements.
Only USB 3.1 Gen 2, M.2 NVMe and DDR4.... Off course I forgot biggest improvement RGB LED, new Aura headers, LED strip, madness-circus on table.

Some rumors say Intel Skylake Xtreme is biggest change after Nehalem.
That's good, if not maybe they will not be able to change domination of AMD.
Anyway X99 was right decision but now we should wait little, it would be bad if Ryzen 5 destroy Broadwell-EX 6 cores for 250$ and Ryzen 7 destroy Intel Broadwell-EX 8 cores for 500$.
Both for half price... Than investment of almost 400$ in i7-7700K willl look as disaster.  He will not be able to reach Ryzen 5 in multi applications even overclocked.
Same as price of processor and price of motherboards will need to go down for at least 50-200$ depend on model.
Maximus 9 Extreme value will be reduced serious than. Rampage V Exteme Black will stay higher because capability to hold Xeons with many cores and i7-6950X but should drop as well.

If AMD R7 beat Broadwell-EX I will need to find i7-6900K some nice value.
He will estimate life of my platform seriously. Some people would say sell now immediately platform and by R7 + Crosshair 6.
But I would like to stay with Intel I still have hope for X99 platform.

Why to change on AMD when only CPU replacement on same chipset put me on same level with AMD's premium model or even stronger, depend how much I want to pay for CPU.
Because of that X99 was better decision and I never suspect even when Skylake was priority. Maybe price will drop and more used i7-6900K become available on market.
I even think that Intel will produce more i7-6950X and i7-6900K with much lower price. For 400$ and 700$ they could sell 100.000 Processors easy, only 8 and 10 cores.
Improvement after overclocking 40%.

Re: X99 Classified v.s Z170 Classified v.s. Z270 Classified? 2017/02/19 20:59:13 (permalink)
Hello all- Thanks for your feed back. One thing though I WILL NOT be overclocking my rig. I get that some like to and do enjoy reading or see what others do to their rig. However that ain't for me. Anyhow I want mine to last as long it'll last for me. After I get this built then I will go with the 32" LCD when it comes out in 144Hz, 2K and Gsync.. yes 4K is nice but their bottlenecking at 60hz is no good for me.. I don't see the valid point of buying a huge screen to be stuck at 60Hz..

So to the point what will it be used for? Well it'll be used for Gaming only! AS for the pedestal on bottom will have Asus itx which to be used for Video editing, rendering, whatever I throw at it. About the gaming rig on top in Caselabs Mercury S8- I am really considering getting another video card where I can decide whether to run as 3 way SLI or just run for PHYS-X only...  Now about the 6 drives. I may go up to 8 drives.. adding 2 more SSD to raid to run only OS while other 2 hard drives for capturing video games or whatever I decide to store there.

AS one mentioned above about EVGA coming out with another mobo that will be like x99 successor?  FOR REAL? FYI I am no hurry to upgrade so.. One thing that is for sure is I want to keep and stay with EVGA all the way even though the AMD may blow intel out of the water. For me that would be like changing over to different brand  and I really dont' want to deal with that unless EVGA goes kaput or out of business.  I don't like having different brands to put together. I can be very loyal to one company if they have all their stuffs together right. Also I like them coordinated as far as colors and the way it's built and looks. (of course that they work well first).

So I hope that helps you get a better idea and concept of where I'm coming from and where I'd like to go to? Here's a picture I have included what it looks like now down below.

Front CaseLabs
Top CaseLabs
Left CaseLabs
Right CaseLabs

Enjoy the pictures. it's not best ones yet. I know the wiring needs cleaning up or cables needs to be shorten some.

Really bad because E-ATX can't fit in Caselabs S5.
I would bought him from Romania but he is only for mATX and I can't afford S8.
S5 have enough space for E-ATX only they didn't planned well.
But OK Lian-Li PC-011 is nice as well.

I am aware that S5 don't fit and I am planning on getting Mercury S8 so I can expand or get larger mobo.. That is why I asked about which out of the three are good then I learned the X99 successor are coming out later. I am in no hurry so I will save and plan for CASELABS S8 plus bigger mobo plus another video card.. If the Mobo will run 2011 then will keep my current cpu if it does not then that's something I'll have to think about.. Cuz I like the 6 core cpu..

Thanks again for your input folks.. will keep yall updated on what I decide to do.. till then..

Scratch the whole idea of getting Mercury S8 Rig.. I have created another thread "My last Hurrah" Build.. I will do one more build with what I already own and buying other new products.. and it'll be only for Gaming Rig...
