My configuration is in the signature below.  I was playing Tomb Raider 2013 and after finishing the game I noticed the top 1080 reached 89C max and was running at the temp for as far as I could go back in the hardware monitor.  I am using MSI Afterburner since I had some issues with Precision (might be fixed now with an update but I have been too lazy to switch back) and the Power Limit is set to the default 100 and the Temp Limit is linked to it and set to 83.  I am running a mild overclock of +75 (1080 FTW) and 400 on the memory.  Thermal mod was done to both cards.  Why did Afterburner let the top card go past the 83C limit?  The bottom card stayed at around 70C.  This particular game is basically a showcase of how well SLI can work, both GPU's are at 99% the whole time, zero microstutter, it's a sight to behold totally maxed at 100 to 120 fps.  And yes, my fan curve is set very aggressively and both cards were running at 100% fan speed.

Maybe I should go back to Precision X to see if the top card will remain at the set 83C?

Thanks.

If both cards were at 100% fan speed, only thing going to make them run cooler is better case cooling.
Seeing as you have a great case with great fans, not sure there is really much you can do besides set up a very aggressive fan curve that ramps the fans to 100% at 60 degrees.

I just figured Afterburner would clock the cards down some more to keep them at 83C.  It did go as low as 1880 Mhz and as high as 2050 when cards were still cool.  Hm, oh well, I saw no artifacts or other issues.

I'd say, even if you run that card at x8 3.0 that you have a space in between the GPU's if you do not already. The increase in clock speed would more than compensate for any fractional percent decrease (if any) from using a x8 slot. Afterburner prioritizes temp or power depending upon how you set it. At the end of the day, the hardware and BIOS controls the limits.

I thought so too. I use AB due to minor bugs in Precision. +75Hz core on an 1080ftw is NOT a mild OC in my opinion. I have very average silicon, but the highest totally reliable OCs I can manage are + 65MHz core an +475MHz VRAM. I have tweaked all parameters and tested many hours to confirm stability, so I think you OC is on the high side.

Regarding temps, yeah 89c is very high. I wonder why it didn't auto throttle? Still I doubt it's a problem but fan profiles will need to be far more aggressive. FTW have good GPU core cooling so with an appropriate fan curve or fixed speed (say 72% which is fairly high) I think you can bring temp under control. That's assuming there is no strange setup where the card is sucking in warm air from, say CPU cooler or just a hot internal case temp. Good luck.

EDIT
Silly me. I didn't realize you were in SLI, two cards. Since I have never done that before I can't with certainty advise well. Still, 89c for prolonged periods is too high, but probably not "dangerous." It's within technical limitations. All I can guess is that warm exhaust from the bottom card is being sucked into the top one, but that's a guess and may not be the case.

Re: Temp limit set to 83, top card still reached 89 during game play? 2017/01/23 11:00:04 (permalink)
Yeah the bottom card is heating up the top card. I have a very aggressive fan profile since I do use Sli, and after double checking the graphs, the top card ran at 100% and the bottom card at 90%. Because I have a x99 system, and because of the pci express lane configuration for this board, I am able to run both cards at x16 3.0. The only puzzling thing is why did the software not throttle the cards down to maintain 83. Since I am now done with this game, I will just continue to monitor Temps in other games. If I run into this issue more frequently I will try to install Precision again to see if that will help.

Oh and I do have one free slot between the two cards.

Thanks for the replies.

ACX type coolers do as great job removing heat from the GPU, however the do dissipate most of that heat into the PC case.  You need to get that heat out of the case with good airflow

Are your case & CPU fans setup like in picture ?

Case fans at 100% ?

If so maybe upgrade your fans to something like EK Vardar F3-140ER - they move a lot more air than my stock corsair fans did

Yes that is my exact case and yes there is an aggressive fan curve set up in the motherboard bios. The fans installed are all Corsair ML140s and I have 2 in the front, one in the back and I replaced the two on the Corsair h115i with the same fans. I will still remove my hard drive cage that is partially locking the lower front fan and move the drives into the 5.25" slots at the top of the case. I am wondering of I should put two more 120s at the bottom acting as intake fans.

Thanks Sajin, I will try that.  Is that what you are using?

I don't mind the cards downclocking themselves since the only time this heat problem occurs, both cards and SLI are working as they're supposed to, unlike certain other games *cough* Watch Dogs 2 *cough cough*, at which point I have lots of fps to spare and don't mind losing a few.

For the others that commented that haven't seen my setup yet:

Re: Temp limit set to 83, top card still reached 89 during game play? 2017/01/24 19:02:07 (permalink)
hihi... i got the same case...  <3

no SLI ... but i can with confidence say that my case fans (prolimatech 140mm) do enough airflow at 500 rpm that the fan of the PSU (Zero Fan Mode) never turns on while gaming.
my CPU fan is a different topic of course but 1000rpm while gaming is enough there as well.

when i switch all the fans to full speed (1000rpm) it even pushes the temps down while the system is idle.
if the fan of your PSU spins while gaming i'd suggest to turn it upside down like mine, then it would pull air from the GPU area out near the bottom.... that might help a bit.
in the top you got room for a third fan but i don't think that would make a big enough difference but if you got a spare it wont hurt to test.

it might also help to put some high end thermal paste or even liquid metal on the GPU.

Since I have a radiator up there, I don't think I have enough room for another fan, but I am going to double check. The other issue I have is that I don't have any more free fan headers left on the motherboard, not sure if could just use some sort of splitter for that and daisy chain it to the other two fans sitting on the radiator.  I do have room for 2 more fans in the bottom of the case, but again, lack of fan headers is a problem here.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a fan splitter or something like that so I can install 3 more fans?  Also, if I were to put 2 more fans at the bottom of the case, should those be intake or exhaust?

How do you enable that priority function on the slider, I don't see that on mine and I am not using the same skin you posted.

Thanks for all the suggestions gentlemen!

Use a self-powered Fan Hub, or you risk pulling too many Watts through the MB and possibly causing damage to one of the traces -- do not exceed the MB header specification

I like and use this --->SilverStone PWM Fan Hub - LINK

These are OK and a little cheaper - (hard to keep wires tidy -- Does Not fit in tight space behind MB tray)
Swiftech 8W-PWM-SPL-ST 8 Way PWM Splitter - LINK

Most systems like positive pressure - more fans blowing In than Out

You can set Afterburner to prioritize by temperature or by power for dynamic clock adjustments.

On pascal video cards it doesn't show up. Only when using the latest version of precision x 16 does it show up.

Thank you Sir!  I am going to open my computer up this weekend and check how many more fans I can cram into this thing.  The Silverstone hub seems perfect for me, thanks again!

Fans and hub are on their way.  I guess I will install them to blow air into the case, after all, warm air rises so it would be pointless trying to exhaust through the bottom.

For what it is worth, this is what I use:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01DV1Z0WC/
It's just a PWM splitter with power coming from the PSU. I have 7 fans PWM speed controlled connected to 1 motherboard header and no load on the header. It's virtually the same as the other 2 products which were suggested, except cheaper and without including a box around it (allowing you to string out over distances more easily).

Thank you. I learn something new every day. Still tying to figure out all the different memory and BCLK and EIST weirdness between EVGA's X99 models...sheesh...

No problem.

Just an update.

I received the 2 ML120s from Corsair and the Silverstone fan hub thing and installed them last night.  Besides installing those parts I also removed the last remaining hard drive cage and moved the 2 drives up to the 5.25 slots using adapters.  Now the fans have a clear shot into the case and the removal of both drive cages made room for the 2 ML120s to be mounted in the floor of the case drawing air in.  Temps have decreased all around, CPU, motherboard temps and GPU temps all dropped around 5C.  I was also able to finally get the 83C limit working by clicking on the link icon to unlink power from temp and then linking it again, it worked after that.  I ran Tomb Raider 2013 (which is the game that caused the high temps to begin with) with power set to 120% and temp limit to 93 and the top card got to 86 and stayed there (compared to 89).  I then enabled the temp limit and the card stayed at 82.  I also observed less drastic throttling by the cards.  So as of now, all is well.  Thanks again for everyones input and advice!
