Hi everybody, here's my issue.

I'm using a GTX 980Ti with an Acer XB270H.  This monitor and this video card are both 144Hz capable and G-Sync capable.  In my past I had a Asus Max. VI Hero mobo, running Win 10, and had 144Hz enabled using the same monitor and the 980Ti. It showed up as an option in BF4, or I could set it in the NVidia Control Panel.  In September of 2016 I built a new rig.  New Asus mobo.  My issue is that since that time the max I can set is 100Hz in the NVidia Control Panel.  It's strange.

I've tried:
1)  In the Nvidia Control Panel - I try to set up a "custom resolution."  I type in 144Hz and test it.  It says "test successful...etc." but it doesn't save the resolution.  Instead it provides 3 saved resolutions of 60Hz, 85Hz, and 100Hz
2)  I've tried unistalling the driver, wiping all traces of it, and reinstalling the driver.  No difference.
3)  I've tried removing and reinstalling GeForce Experience.  No change.
4)  I've tried using cru-1.3, a custom resolution utility.  Saving a resolution there and restarting the graphics card.  No change other than it resets everything to 60Hz.

The only thing I haven't tried is buying a new display port cable.

Is this a Windows issue?  Is anyone else having this issue.  I've googled and I can't find anything that resembles this that isn't fixed with a monitor setting or a cable or using the Nvidia Control Panel.

    Hello,

When you purchased your new motherboard did you do a clean install of windows?

Also, are you setting the resolution under UHD, HD, SD resolutions or PC resolutions in the Nvidia control panel?

Yes, new SSDs, clean install from scratch.  I mention that it worked before so that people would know it used to work.

Apparently on the Nvidia forums there are all kinds of people having problems w/ Nvidia drivers in Win 10 around custom resolutions.

Try DDU and load Nvidia driver 372.90

Use default settings - safe mode with reboot option

Backup critical info and make a restore point first ---> just in case it goes sideways

My 4K monitor does not support those refresh rates, that is the driver I run in Win 10 Pro 64bit

What does your monitor show up as in Device Manager ? Generic = need driver

Not sure if it's related but why do you have it set to 6 bpc? That's gonna kill your colors, that monitor supports 8 bpc, you should change it (and maybe that will help with the Hz?).

I do this with my similar monitor, and it always detects 144hz, even when I dont want it to (120hz is enough for any game, if it is true 120hz and not doubled 60hz).

Try uninstalling the monitor driver to see if that helps the issue.

    Re: Can't enable 144Hz 2017/01/21 10:16:44 (permalink)
Responding here to all the questions above:

(Q1)  Does this occur in earlier releases of Windows 10?
    (A) I think here was a time earlier when the 144Hz resolution was possible - shortly after my new build - when I could select 144Hz in Battlefield 4.  But that would be under earlier releases of both Win 10 64-bit and NVidia drivers.

    (Q2)  Why 6bpc?
    (A)  Because 8bpc isn't available in the dropdown except for the 60Hz resolution.

    (Q3) Try removing the monitor?
    (A)  I've tried the MS driver (Generic Monitor) and the Acer Driver.  Same result both ways.

(Q3)  Try DDU and using 372.90.
    (A)  I may have to try that.  I've seen elsewhere that older drivers might do the trick.

*** Let me roll back the driver to 372.90 and I'll report my findings.  ***

Well, I tried the above and I got the same results.

    (1) Created restore point
    (2) Used DDU, restarted in Safe Mode, wiped drivers
    (3) Restarted - generic windows display driver was in use.
    (4) Downloaded 372.90.  Installed.  Successful.
    (5) Generic PnP monitor.  Attempted to change resolution - same results.  60, 85, 100Hz for 1920x1080.
    (6) Installed the Asus monitor .inf - same results.

    It's weird.

In your first post you said you haven't tried a new cable. Make sure you get a really good certified cable and try that.

If you notice when using CRU you're trying to set a pixel clock of of 148khz which is out of range with the 145khz max. That is why it wont save and why your bit depth is all wrong. You might have some success using the pixel clock patch... Here's a huge guide...

    Try it this way:

    (1) Uninstall any msi afterburner or evga software, and also the Rivatuner stats, delete the Nvidia folder in C:\, reboot.
    (2) Use DDU restarted in Safe Mode to see if anything is left over that needs to be uninstalled.
    (3) Install the Asus monitor .inf and reboot after a minute or 2.
    (4) Make sure that the correct Asus monitor is detected in Device Manager > Monitors (weird, I had installed my monitor inf, and it just says 'generic monitor' now, and I know it was there when I was using G-Sync, but I recently turned off G-Sync and set it to 120hz instead of 144hz, so maybe stopping G-Sync made it go back to generic monitor, weird).
    (5) 372.90  Install (Install ONLY nvidia driver and phys-x, do NOT install anything else), using custom mode, clean install checked, reboot.
    (6) Go to nvidia control panel, and see if there is 144hz

Just out of curiosity, since my ROG Swift does this, what is the actual monitor set to? Everyone is talking windows settings, but just verify the actual monitor itself is set to 144hz, and not turned down to 100.

With my swift, if it is set to 120 or 60hz, it will not allow windows to go up to 144hz. It may be correct on the monitor, but I would start at the one factor that doesn't allow higher settings to appear first.

Ah, you mean in the OSD monitor settings itself?
I have an Asus and Acer both 144hz, and never had to enable through the monitor itself, but good call, it might have lost power and reset to a state that isnt 144?

Also, how is your cable? Is it old? Did you change it? I believe you need an hdmi 2.0 or above specced cable to do 144hz. Displayport is the same as hdmi in needing 2.0 or above specced cable.
Also, if using dvi, then you need a dvi-d cable to do 144hz.

I'm using the DisplayPort cable that came with the monitor.  I'll try a new cable eventually.  It's either that or some bizarre software issue.

This first generation Acer monitor doesn't have a setting in the OSD to choose refresh rate.

Good point.  I'll try that.  Having said that, I shouldn't even have to set a custom resolution.  It should just work.  It used to prior to mid-2016.
