Hi folks, I'm new here and i have a problem with my SR-2.

For some reason the board refuses to recognize anything in pci slots 1 to 4 while 5 to 7 work fine. I tried clear CMOS, updating the BIOS, replacing the battery, bleeding the power, different ramsticks, 2 different platinum psu's (860W and 1200W) and multiple gpu's but so far no luck. There are no bend cpu pins and no signs of corrosion or short circuits. I also ruled out loose connectors, all of them are plugged in their proper location. I've been breaking my head over this issue for some time but I don't seem to find a solution but I have this feeling it's something stupid. I found out I could get a hold of a new BIOS chip on Ebay to see if this might do something but I'm not sure.. If anyone here has a solution for this problem then that would be great. The board functions normally besides those 'faulty' pci slots.

Thanks in advance :)

And you checked the disable pci-e switches too?

It'd really suck if one of your PLX took a crap (the chip that splits the x16 to dual x16 for 1 and 3)

jup checked those to and all were fitted nicely in the correct way. I checked the chipsets as well by removing the EKWB block that was on it but no signs of damage what so ever. All the red pci led's light up at boot. At boot it goes past AA and then the E2 error code with 2/3 beeps followed by 7-8 short beeps. Then it's stuck at debug 78 with no screen. I get this with every BIOS. Would suck indeed if the chipset is up for scrap..

What if you disable a few slots? Say kill 2-4 so only 1 is on, video on 5? Use a very low power device, like a network card.

Idea 1) the signal traces on one of the slots is messed up, either in the slot or on the PCB.
Idea 2) the PLX tanked.
Idea 3) the power circuit that drives those slots tanked. I've had problems with it being pissy if I mix power rails (I run dual single rail 80a supplies, each within 200mv of each other.)

Do you have a way to check the voltage on the slots, and a quality volt meter (fluke, bk, hp, ect)?

Some times stuff just fries. My first SR2 cooked its audio right off the bat. Windows and Linux would not see it anymore. I sold that board to my brother, and it still runs three years later.

They may be stuck on disable or dirty switch back and forth repeatedly over and over again while its off of course .than switch to the on position
sounds silly but may work

Sounds like a duff board. The first one I bought new had a duff PCIe slot #1. As far as I could tell the 1st PCIe lane connectivity was broken. Some cards (e.g. Nvidias) completely refused to POST in that slot. Others POST-ed but only at half the link width (e.g. AMD cards registered as x8 cards).

Thanks for the replies, I will test some of this stuff out and see how it goes. Is there a way to get the PLX fixed if that would be the case? (probarly not but asking is free right) Or is there a way of looking this up within Windows? About those AMD cards, I still have a HD4870x2 lying around..might as well try that..

Thanks anyway :) Would be great to get it working again

You don't have to use a video card to test it. Try a 1x or 4x network card.

You'd have to find a PLX chip, and then bake it on. Not an easy task. Not impossible, but pretty close.

Hmm..a lot of effort but yeah.. where is that chip on the motherboard somewhere since google did not give me any tips.. i know i wouldn't need a videocard but i have no 1x or 4x pcix cards lying around :p

PS: I got your messege btw but I'm not yet able to send PM's due to EVGA's restrictions (must be at  least a member for 5 days etc.) But to answer it here; I'm from outside the US. Belgium to be exact :) I just got this board used and thought it would be an easy fix. The seller informed me of the problem. I saw a lot of sr-2's on USA's Ebay but I could not get it here since they were either not shipping it or de import taxes were to high. I bought mine from inside the EU.

I'm not sure where the chip is exactly. It should be under the southbridge heatsink, about 2cm by 2cm.

It's gonna take some serious heat gun voodoo to reflow that chip or replace it. This isn't a PS3 :-)

If the plx chip is really burnt out it won't show up when using nvflash --list command.

Well I tried this, and I don't see an indication of the PLX. But in Windows I found something referring to a Pci-to-Pci Bridge and that seems to be active. According to my researh this should come down to the same thing (could be wrong) but I guess nvflash made the verdict somewhat clear.. I guess I can't do nothing now. This sucks.

Well I guess it's settled then, this board is a half working mobo now..tried everything. Sure i can plop something in pci 5 to 7 but that was not the purpose..If anyone is able to help me out with an SR2 in 100% working condition at a nice price and wants to ship it to me (Belgium) then feel free to PM me or something..I'm bumbed out

Quick question though; could it be a faulty Nvidia NF200 chipset or the Intel 5520 chipset? I guess the 5520 since that one provides the lanes..

If you don't see BR04 (05B1h) listed under nvflash --list command then your NF200 isn't working.

interresting, I did not see the PLX one to which you referred but I could detect 2 or 3 adapters (it was late, before bed, can't remember exactly), one being the GTX580 I mounted to test. The card was in slot 5. The 9500GT in slot one did not show up. I will go and look at it again after work but I'm curious; if the BR04 (05B1h) shows up then I guess the chipsets are fine and the problem is something else? Thanks in advance of putting in your time and effort guys. loving the forum already!

You should be aware that there are two NF200 bridges on the SR-2. One drives slots 1-4, the other slots 5-7. Each provides multiplexes 16 lanes into 32. The upstream lanes are provided by the Intel 5520 (36 in total, other 4 are used for the NICs, SATA-3, audio, IIRC). Symptoms you describe (nothing in slots 1-4 working) implies one of the NF200 bridges has indeed failed, rather than just individual lanes. If the 5520 had failed the board wouldn't work at all.

Yeah i tought as much :/ I guess I need to unmount the waterblock and take a closer at the nf200 chips. I guess the top one drives the first 4 lanes? (photo found on the forum, credit goes to tbp7463)

I found this one on Ebay:
wwwdotebaydotcom/itm/1x-New-NF200-P-NF200-P-SL1-A3-NF200PSLIA3-NF200-P-SLI-A3-NF200-P-SLI-A3-BGA-Chip/401130506136?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D39850%26meid%3D7cfce1f77fb943d9a521c0734a173600%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D271103302194 ( I cant post url yet due to restrictions since I'm an early member but this is kinda urgent..I hope the mods forgive me)

The place I work at works together with a company that has a special machine capable of detaching and mounting motherboardchips. I might give them a call and see what they charge if I could get a hold of this chip. I might even buy two just to be sure since the price is superlow and shipping is free. Any thoughts?

Worth a shot if you can get it fixed cheaply. There is of course the risk that it's not the NF200 that failed but something else (e.g. the power feed or another trace to the NF200).

Yes indeed but if they'll do it for free or for a very small amount then I'm willing to take that risk. The price of the chips is to low not to take it. And if the board is indeed doomed, even after the repair, then I guess I'll just save up for another one or buy another board completely. Just a shame since I really really wanted a working SR2 in my possesion.
I will post the nvflash shot just o be sure. Would be stupid to break out the waterblock if both chips would show up.

Took some pictures of the chips (removed the block and thermal paste obviously) Nothing much to see though. I got into contact with the company that has that soldering machine. They're going to let me know if they can handle it. I had to send the boards info in order for the technician to see if it's possible. fingers crossed.
Chip: Nvidia NF200 - SLI - A3
I guess this one should be good then:

Thoughts? If I can get this to work then by science i found out the problem and the solution thanks to you guys! I hope I can get it to work 100% Then I'll be posting the updates!

UPDATE: The company that solders chips got in touch with me and gave the green light. They don't have experience with the board itself (they usely do mac mobo's) but are willing to give it a try (for free) if i come over with the board and chips. So I just ordered 4! And now we wait
