Well here it is, a 1060 3gb GPU

I have to say it's a very nice card in physical appearance, just too bad you can not view it installed on your motherboard. Believe it or not, it's longer than the 970's in length. Yes, I went with a FTW for the cooling fans. I watched several reviews on the single fan version and at full speed fan they sounded very loud. I wanted to avoid a replay of my years ago folding with 460's and 560's along with a few 480's sounding like a tornado warning.

Performance wise so far I would say it's "almost" comparable to the 970's. I have just installed it and this is the first WU it has ran, clicking through the GPU's it has a higher estimated PPD. Granted I would need to have an apples to apples WU to get true performance statistics between the cards.
Quick Screen shot:

Temperatures??  The 970's are top and bottom cards GPU1 and GPU2 , 1060 middle card GPU3. Why Afterburner reports it this way I'm not sure. Possibly since I added the 1060 last and didn't reinstall the program. I have verified slot position with GPUZ.
                                      Temperature                   GPU Usage                 Fan Percentage

Running cool and somewhat quiet and I am pleased with the results so far. I cannot tell if the 1060 fans are any louder than the 970's at this point in time since the top 970 is running full bore. Hopefully I will receive the blocks for the 970's tomorrow and get this ghetto mess in another case and spiffed up and presentable. The 1060 will run on air since there are no full cover water blocks for them, and from what I read there probably never will be either.

Well the card holds it's own against a 970, I would put it at equal at this point in time (at least in my setup with my 970's). If anyone knows of a program to monitor individual output/PPD  in a multi-GPU set up show me a link please. I supposed I could remove the 970's and let it run by itself for a few days and get results.

Set back on water cooling and swapping cases, USPS had my water blocks and the link block. (2 separate orders since I forgot the link in the original order), As usual my luck always prevails, both were "showing" expected delivery for today. The only thing that made it was the link, so with that I will have to wait until next weekend to get the system swapped and the 970's water cooled.

Well your 1060 3GB is putting out more PPD than my 1070 FTW Hybrid.  Only getting about 300K PPD out of it.  Pretty sure it's my 5 year old Asus P8P67 motherboard and the fact that's in an x1 slot.

Didn't have the power connectors in my folding rig, so have a new PSU on order...

The fact is a 970 and 1060 are probably about equal in performance terms. The gains in Pascal gpus are pretty large compared to earlier generations. Your main benefit is going to be power consumption given how the 1060 3gb got its Cuda cores cut. You're also talking about what different class cards and I think it's great how close their performance is.

I agree, but folks were thinking that since it did get the Cuda cores cut on the 3gb version it wouldn't Fold very well compared to the 6gb 1060.  I purchased this for Folding alone, I liked the price point AND the lower power consumption. Curiosity killed the cat and I wanted to see the results that I would get. So far I am pleased with the results!!!

Download and install HFM if you don't already, that will show you PPD for each slot.

I went one step different, I pulled the 970s to run the 1060 by itself. I just did that today so I will run it the rest of the week by itself. I need to put the water blocks on the 970s and swap out the case. Had a set back though on the water blocks.........they came from Performance PC in FL--->IL distribution center about 40 miles away from my house and then were sent to North Austin TX and are hopefully back on their way north to me in IL. No estimate on delivery date.........Meanwhile back in the fold....alone....

You could also run FAHbench separately on each card to compare throughput between the 970 and 1060.

    @species
4 days of sole production for this 1060 3gb:

    376,841+345,369+371,985+349,976= 1,444,171 / 4 = 361,042.75ppd average

NOTE: These results are with the FTW+ and the factory OC, I have NOT OC'd further.

I started this GPU by itself late on the 17th, any results prior to the 17th are with 970s and 980s folding also. I shut those down so I could see the PPD of this 1060 only. Temperatures hold ~50-55*C with fans controlled by Afterburner @ ~50-53% in an open case. This is the only GPU on the MOBO at this time. The CPU (i7 875k on a EVGA P55 FTW MOBO) is WC'd with an external radiator and 3 case fans blowing in to the case. (even though I have the side of the case off) If I can find my kill-a-watt I will pull power numbers too.

Here are my STATS if you are interested in hourly numbers.

Yes in the first screen shot it had one and several more over the days it has ran. It is working on one right now, I assume you mean FahCore 0x21.

Yes FahCore 0x21, Core 21 short name or slang name. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Folding@home_cores

Actually today is the first time I have seen my 1060 3GB hitting 300k PPD. I installed  the 7.4.16 beta client and added the -beta flag on the gpu client. This raised the PPD by around 10%, usually it does 260-275k PPD.

The rig the 1060s (now 3/ ~1.3mil PPD average) are in is only used to Fold or Crunch, nothing else going on at all. I have no 'beta" flags set, except I only fold Parkinsons WUs (well that is what my preferences are set for) which are from what the logs show are only Core x21 WUs. I have seen a Core x18 when no preference is set and those kill pretty much every GPU along with the 1060s. I check it maybe once a day if that to check temps and that is all. I have my main rig for gaming and occasional Folding and Crunching if I feel the need for a boost in WUs done.

Which 1060 card do you have, and which driver???  From what I've read, driver 372.90 gives best PPD output, but haven't kept close enough track of my WU's to see for myself.

    Re: 970 FTW+ VS 1060 FTW+ 3gb 2017/01/11 10:23:49 (permalink)
I have the Gigabyte mini ITXOC with the 373.06 driver. The card stays by default at 1873 MHz on boost all the time while folding, but I got a fresh Win7 install this morning and using the MSI Afterburner I sent it like 144 MHz further it stays at 2012 MHz now, completed one Core 21 WU just fine, so it is stable. So it seems that in between 1873 MHz and 2 GHz there is a threshold for the 1060 3GB that boosts the score significantly, because my production jumped to 375k PPD! I still maintain the -beta flag.
I am happy to report that the 2GHz overclock is stable and no WUs have been dropped, I have not chosen any preference for a specific disease, just maintaining the -beta flag, however with the public 7.4.4 client, the beta one was a bit antsy and the GUI was shaky. If you follow my stats at EOC note that the stats starting this morning, 11th of Jan 2017 are with the core at 2 GHz. http://folding.extremeove...ry.php?s=&u=645426
