Two older versions of Windows are approaching their mandatory retirement date in one month. If you want a new PC running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you'll have fewer options beginning on Nov, 1, 2016. Link

Can use them, but buying them will get harder as months go on and stores run out of stock.

Windows 10 is fine once you turn off all of the privacy junk.

I bet there will be a lot of people who will start buying licenses for Windows 7 in bulk before the deadline.

On November 1st, all sales of 7 must stop. That means OEM disk sales as well must stop and unsold inventory returned to Microsoft for destruction. But 10 is actually very nice not sure why anyone would stay with Windows 7, its archaic.

I see no real issues with this as long as Microsoft does not Block Activation for Windows 7

Win 10 continuous updates & reboot requirements is nuts; though I'm on Pro, you can not differ updates forever. MS Win 10, needs to ask if people want their GPU drivers change for one thing As it has hosed my drivers to the point of needing to manually reinstall for Folding to work. Yes, there is a hack or DDU "fix" but really in Pro, I should have an option of do not update these drivers automatically with a simple check box. Opting out of the Anniversary "update" should not be a battle either. My 2 biggest producing Folding rigs are on Win 10 Pro; nothing like waking up to a reboot killed my PPD at 2 or 3 AM.

be proactive, setup a script to start folding automatically after a system reboot.

One you can disable driver updates for Windows 10, its built in but not enabled by default. 2 if its a critical system it should be running Pro, Home should not be used for anything critical, pro will let you defer updates for up to 6 months, and those features work, business use them all the time, the smaller ones that don't run their own update server. If your running a home edition its meant for regular people, Pro is for enthusiasts and business. You want to keep using 7 though, go ahead no one is stopping you, but there will be a date when drivers for new hardware arn't written for 7. You've got less than 4 years before 7 dies just remember that. You can go to linux sure, but Linux doesn't work with a lot of stuff even with wine. Your call what you do, but maybe check into facts first. As for auto login script, who said it needs to log the entire computer in, if you know what your doing you can script it to start the program under your profile without actually logging you into the desktop at all, aka launch program and in effect lock the computer at the same time.

I am on: Win 10 Pro 64bit on two of my systems, using them as dedicated Folding machines. Third Folder is Win 7 Pro 64bit. I'm aware of the ability to force 10 to almost do what I want; it is much more painful than it needs to be. 4 years is a very long time in the PC world = 20 humane years. Most stuff people own will be past obsolete in 4 years anyways Just my $0.02
