So I have an 8600GTS for Windows XP type games, mainly because my PSU isn't powerful enough to drive my 7900GTX. But I notice when using it on my KVM if i switch away for longer than about 30 minutes the screen goes and stays black. Anyone encountered this and have any advice?

I found on my Old KVM I can only use the 15-Pin VGA Cable.
For some reason my DVI-I to 15-Pin Adaptor would not work.
It would work connected to the Monitor but not the KVM.

Well its a DVI KVM not VGA, so its all connected via DVI cables. It just stops randomly working. I use the same 24in screen for my 10, XP, and 98 computers, i don't get this problem with my FX5900XT on 98SE or my GTX 480 on 10, just the 8600GTS on XP

Have you tested other DVI Cables?

Tested with a 9500GT and the issue doesn't occur. May switch from my 8600GTS to my 9500GT DDR3, not sure I'll notice a difference

I'm sorry candle, that's a weird bug you stumbled on. Wish I had a better answer for ya but the only other thing I can think of is maybe it's a dvi conflict. Maybe ones dvi-d and the other dvi-I and theres a sensing pin conflict.

Well that wouldn't make sense, the DVI on the FX 5900XT is DVI-I the GTX 480 is DVI-D, not sure on the 8600GTS
