Yep, it was a cash grab. I'm glad I waited for the reviews. Lmao.

When No Man’s Sky launched in August, it was already clear that the game would primarily appeal to a niche audience. The title’s lead designer and head of developer Hello Games, Sean Murray, has been blasted for promising the game would include features that didn’t actually ship. Not long after launch, Murray and Hello Games went radio-silent as players began requesting refunds. Now, nearly a month later, the game has transformed into a ghost of its former self.

Some articles have implied that Hello Games has ceased communication altogether, which isn’t quite true. While Murray hasn’t tweeted since August, HG has continued patching the game and releasing patch notes for each update, including a 1.09 update that dropped today and contains a fairly significant list of patch notes. But the facts don’t lie — No Man’s Sky has seen a cataclysmic drop-off in players. While it’s hard to find an exact title to compare against, Subnautica, a similar action-adventure open-world survival game with an emphasis on crafting and exploration, has seen nothing like No Man’s Sky falloff. In the graphs below, we check daily concurrent player totals in Subnautica, Don’t Starve, and No Man’s Sky itself. Note that the y-axis peaks are set differently for each title by Steam Spy — we’ll take that into account below.

You only have one chance to get a launch right. No devs get that anymore.

Took the words right out of my mouth. When a game sucks that bad at launch, I don't think any amount of patching is going to fix it.

Color me not surprised. This is enough to put them out bombing like this. The only thing that saved them was strong sales out of the gate.

You can tell a programmer came up with the seed variations, not an artist or designer. It plays like a programmer designed the whole game. That seems to me to be the largest flaw in enjoyment of the game. The other stuff can be fixed, but it's just a fundamentally boring game.

I gave up on the game after a hard fought 2 hours to enjoy it. Took me almost half an hour just to figure out how to craft something in the menus. Very counter intuitive when compared to something like Minecraft or other survival/inventory management systems.

Reminds me of The Division. I actually have enjoyed the game, but have played it out and am waiting for new content to return. But their launch include so many horrific problems that it too is now a veritable ghost town. That's really too bad.

Oh well, now let's see if Star Citizen is ever actually launched for real.

I actually went and checked the game out on steam earlier today. I have to say the videos make the game really really good, but when you look at the ratings, wow, incredible... overwhelmingly negative. It's only been over a month since it launched, and it's still $60.

    Yep, they did.

After No Man's Sky hit shelves in early August, complaints arose around bugs and oversights made by its small studio Hello Games. But as the weeks wore on, a new uproar struck out at the differences between concept videos and the released game, which some players and press believe lacked many features promised in its early promotional material. Now the UK-based Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is launching an investigation into those disparities.

The inquiry specifically regards material appearing on the No Man's Sky's Steam store page. But the ASA's decision would be applicable to all advertising that similarly doesn't reflect the final game, a spokesman told Reddit user AzzerUK, who posted a list of the main claims being investigated.
By their descriptions, the ASA is assumedly comparing the final game to its E3 2014 demo, which is also the first one that appears front and center on the game's Steam page. Among those are disparities, like UI design, flowing water and aiming systems, that are the kinds of things that change during a game's development. But others are more severe: It's clear that the released version lacks several features displayed in the press video, like animals interacting and crashing through environmental underbrush or large-scale space battles.
If the ASA does declare that the game was falsely advertised, it's unclear what kind of repercussions Hello Games would face: The UK regulator's page indicates that, in most cases, the offending companies simply agree to remove the ad. In that case, they'd just strip the videos and claims on No Man's Sky's Steam page to comply.
Despite all the outrage and supposed flood of refunds at the end of August, the game still sold ridiculously well in its first week. SteamSpy indicates over 750,000 units sold on the platform to date, all presumably at the $60 sticker price. Further bad press from a false advertising declaration won't ruin the game's already controversial reputation, which has a "Mostly Negative" rating (only 34% positive) on Steam. Hello Games would probably just cry all the way to the bank.
Engadget has reached out to Steam and Hello Games, neither of which responded at press time.

There is something just wrong with the idea that you can min-max yourself out on the starter planet.

I honestly feel they should have combined forces with CCP Games, the game developer of Eve. They would have had a better shot, but you can tell they were being greedy by being the single company to develop the game and try to publish the game as well. *Failed*

Eve isn't a space game, it's an economy and political game that happens to be in space.
