I just built a pc and used the NH-U12S. It did not block the first PCIe slot in which I installed a EVGA GeForce GTX 1070. I thought it would block it but it left about 1/2 inch and the gpu fit into the slot easily. If the NH-D15 heatsink is not wider than the U12S, it will be fine.  Fyi, my mobo is the EVGA Classified K.

In fact, the NH-D15 - as using two 14 cm-fans instead of a single 12 cm fan like the NH-U12S - measures 2,5 cm more in width.

The width of the NH-D15  is 15 cm, so from the center of the cpu socket to its outer end there are 7,5 cm = 5,81 inch. Maybe LR Mark can measure out the distance between the center of the cpu socket and the first PCIe-slot. I think it should be just enough place, but if you use a graphics card with a backplate it could be quite tight...

According to Noctua's own FAQ, it fits... gets the green check mark and everything, so there shouldn't be any clearance issues.

Just click the EVGA link for LGA1151 in the list near the top of the page, or scroll down to about the halfway point to find the Z170 FTW.

Yeah I saw that, but I'm wondering if variables like choice of video card and/or RAM would affect that and to what extent Noctua took that into account when giving out those green checkmarks.

I was just wondering if anyone has personally used this cooler with the Z170 FTW and if they encountered any issues with blocked PCI-E or RAM slots.

Here are the cooler measurements for reference:

    http://noctua.at/en/sip_productfaqnew/productfaq/view/id/100

    My specific questions are:

    1. Would the fan on the NH-D15 overhang any of the RAM slots?

    2. If I wanted to use the EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW Gaming ACX 3.0 in the first PCI-E slot, would that be a problem with the NH-D15?

Can't say for sure since I don't have a Z170 FTW. I do have an NH-D15 on a Z97-Pro Gamer, though. The cooler accommodates most RAM, but I'm sure that taller heatsinks would potentially be an issue. For reference, I use low-profile Vengeance sticks, and have no problems whatsoever. My motherboard also has a PCI-E 1x slot in the very first position, so my GPU actually sits in the the second slot on the board. The cooler would cause problems if that first slot was a bonafide x16 for the graphics, but as it is a PCI-E wi-fi card just fits underneath the cooling fins.

There is a newer version of the NH-D15 (an S variant, I think), that is supposed to be offset, and may be a better option for you.

Are these the RAM sticks you used:

Did you have to raise the fan's mount position at all on the NH-D15 to provide clearance for the RAM?

Almost... mine are the DDR3L version, so they're just plain old Vengeance LP.

The fans on mine are set roughly in the center of the heatsinks, so they sit up past the top about the same distance as they hang below. Now that I think about it, I do remember having to set them up just a little higher than I originally planned because of the memory... but not by much. I should also note that the case is an Air 540, so I had the extra room to mount the fans like that without causing any other problems.
