I recommend Norton, Windows Defender, ESET, etc.  It's also great to package it with Malwarebytes Antimalware Premium.

I used to recommend AVG but it has gotten a bit bloated these days.

None of them will block everything - it's just the nature of how things work these days.  I run Webroot at home and really like it because it's not bloated, it really doesn't slow down the computer like I have seen some of the other ones do, and can be had on sale pretty cheap.  Yes I know there are free versions out there but I would rather not deal with all the ads, nags, etc that seem to be a part of them now.  I also will agree with NazcaC2 that MalwareBytes is an excellent program to use in addition to your antivirus program.

I used to recommend to Avast to people but it's become rather bloated these past few years. It's still a good option though, just literally disable all of the components except for Virus and Web shield during installation as that's all anyone really needs. I personally just use Windows Defender in combination with Malwarebytes Pro on my current rig as the Avast ad popups have gotten too annoying for me.

I use windows defender full time and Malwarebytes to do the occasional scan for the sake of being doubly sure..........Oh, and never both at once. Have yet to have any problems. My motto- why pay for stuff you really don't need, or have to?

Norton Security Suite - because Comcast includes it. - it has gotten good reviews last few years - unlike before

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium -- good job blocking malware sites (free is also good - just no live feature)

    Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit (free)

SUPERantipsyware -- good secondary, catch any missed by above

I no longer use an AV

I run my browsers inside a sandbox (Sandboxie)

And I have the free home version of Rollback RX

And I check every downloaded program effortlessly with the VTzilla extension.

Chrome also has the VTzilla extension fyi

Sandboxie traps any malicious programs/cookies etc...which are deleted whenever I close the browser.
Sandboxie does not prevent malicious programs from running/installing, but they are trapped inside the sandbox...which is why you never do anything like banking in a sandbox that has been open all day.
When I need to do any shopping or banking I start a new clean sandbox.
Check out YouTube for info on SB.

VTzilla is incorporated right into the download pop-up window...you can either click "save" or "scan"...if you click scan, the file is instantly sent over to VirusTotal and is scanned by 68 AV's.

Rollback RX takes a "snapshot" of my OS everyday at startup. If something goes horribly wrong (like if I install a program that I hate) it's easy to just re-boot and "rollback" the system. It starts before Windows, so even if Windows is messed up, you can still rollback to a working version of Windows...unlike Windows Restore.

I haven't run an AV for about 2 years...I do occasionally scan with Malware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware.

Of course you can also run an AV while using Sandboxie if you are super paranoid.

Look at it this way...no AV will catch every virus/malware. When it fails, you can just delete your sandbox and go on with your day.
The VTzilla extension is priceless in my opinion because instead of scanning a file with just your "native" AV...you can scan it with 60+ AV's

It's all a matter of preference in my opinion. I know people who say that McAfee is the worst AV out there but yet there are people who will swear they have not gotten a single virus since they've had it. I personally don't like Norton and never have, but there are a lot of people who love and swear by it.

Good surfing habits, knowing what the heck ur installing on ur systems!

Malwarebytes and Ad/Script Blocking on ur browser "I use FF myself", because at one time Chrome wouldnt allow you to run a ad/script block.  And only hit a few regular sites a week, and keep ur blacklist/no script updated .

Just comes down to know what ur looking for and healthier internet habits.  I I wont use mobile for surfing or downloading, and its scary what adults install and allow said apps full access to their phones personal data!

I always recommended AVG but no more! You get spammed with ads for their 'PC Tune up' junk. Even with the Premium paid version of AVG Anti-Virus you can't eliminate the ads but you can set a time limit on how often you will get these popup notifications on your screen. The least amount of spam you can see on your screen is 'once per week'. Another thing I noticed is the 43 to 45 'Restart Manager' warnings in my Event Viewer each and every time AVG updates their software which is more and more frequent. IDK what I will be using next year but I have been letting my licenses expire at which time AVG will automatically install the 'Free' version.

Since AVG has begun their 'advertise untill they leave' mentality I've switched totally from using them to installing Immunet. It's fairly lightweight and I'm enjoying the ability to just not be spammed by continual popup advertising from AVG. Couple that with Spybot and (every so often) malwarebytes and I'm fairly set. I generally don't have any issues with this setup and I've recommended that my clients use it as well and they are having great success with this.

Anyone ever try "PC Medic" That program that's always advertised on TV?

I don't recommend using 'PC Medic' which is being advertised heavily. What you are currently using is more than adequate. From what I understand about it the product causes more trouble than it's worth purchasing and it places spyware on the system which will bog things down mostly.

+1. Norton + Malwarebytes is a really great defense.

I use BitDefender Free edition. They consistently rank among the highest in detection rates and it uses very little resources compared to some others. Never been nagged or even gotten a marketing email from them.

I use Avast, Malwarebytes, and a handful of other one scan type programs. (spybot, Hijack This, TDSKiller)

Every few months Ill go through and mega scan with every program I can find in safemode or boot disc.

Never find anything ever. It almost bothers me it doesn't find at least 1 malicious program or cookie.

Chrome and Adblock prevent you from getting a lot of bad stuff because they block ads that redirect you to malicious websites. Adblock is the best. Although more recently, some websites will open another brower/tab then it will close immediately when its blocked. Makes me think something is on my PC - BUT I CANT FIND IT.

I was just going to do a fresh install but then I remembered that I didn't buy Windows 10 and upgraded from Windows 8. So Im not sure if I even can do a clean install of windows 10...

If you are reinstalling on the same hardware a clean install should work just fine.
