Wasn't exactly going to use a 10", but an X (yeaaaahh) has a subwoofer of mine that hasn't been taken out of the box (brand new) from Infinity. It's a really nice subwoofer with a lot of punch. I would have to make the right measurements to get the frequencies I need, but it's definitely doable. That is if the X will give me my sub back . Otherwise I will think about a 15" subwoofer. my fronts are decent. I also don't have that big of a room, and my fronts/center are fairly close, at max 6 feet away. thoughts?

The other factors to consider are this...  You'll need a separate amp to power the sub since it would be a pretty bad idea to attempt to power it from the receiver.  If you notice most home theater subs have a built in plate amp.  Also you'll need to pay attention to the impedance (ohms) of the subwoofer you have and wiring methods if its DVC.  Generally speaking car audio runs 4 ohm and home audio is 8 ohm (some 6ohm) so as long as you get something compatible it would work.

You can hijack away now. My issue is fixed. I just need to upload pics.

When it comes to audio the "issue" is never "fixed" - just like with PCs - you'll get the upgrade bug at some time, but at least audio stuff doesn't go obsolete nearly as fast!   So are you happy that you ended up putting together your own system as compared to an all in one box and are you happy with the system (so far) in general?  Because that is what matters!

So far I'm very happy. It was never an issue, but picking out my system is "resolved" now.

I realize I bought way too much system for my apartment though. And I love that. The bookshelf speakers aren't hooked up yet but the rest is. Will get pics uploaded tonight.

The center speaker and each bookshelf speaker individually is larger than my receiver! I thought those would be smaller. lol. But Im happy with it. I am just going to wire the bookshelf speakers upstairs as a Zone 2 setup for now.

Thanks again everyone for the suggestions! I will upload pics soon. I promise.

No such thing as "way too much system" - as long as you can remember that the volume knob also decreases volume.   Much better to just think of it as an investment - since if/when you move somewhere with more space you will have a system still relevant!

Well, the one thing I like about that Infinity sub is that it has a Impedance switch. If I want to use 4ohm, I just hit the switch back. If I want to use 2ohm, I hit the switch the other way. Now, I don't want to throw the idea that "the heavier the sub, the better it is", but it has a huge magnet, and the weaving of the sub is top notch, plus it has a built in clip detection. It wasn't a $30 subwoofer you can get from Walmart, hell no. So, with that, if I can get a really good box that meets the prerequisite air pressure for that subwoofer, then it would be mind blowing, Yeah, I will have to get an amp for sure. My receiver has 2 pre-out sub channels. I just have to go get it, lol.

Looks good man - plus having the receiver on top there gives it plenty of ventilation which is important if you want it to last!  If it's not hard to pull your TV down (which it doesn't look like it is) you could easily add one of these shelves to it and position it above the TV with the center speaker on it.  It holds 22 LBS and I think your center only weights about 15 or so.  Basically you pull the TV down and take out the 4x bolts from the VESA bracket, and slip this mount in-between - and put the mount back on.

I thought about getting a mount for above. Think I might just leave it off center where its at though for ease of use and configuration. It sounds good. The bass is great. I dont feel good though about turning it up past like...25%. Even at low volumes, high bass just makes the entire apartment shake. Feel bad for the neighbors in that respect so Ill keep the sub down until Battlefield 1 comes out. Then...the national guard might get called for my place sounding like a warzone.

This is my current set up which is a 100" automatic Elite screen, Denon 7.2 Receiver, Infinity Alpha mains and center with some in ceiling 6" speakers with aimable tweeters in the ceiling for overheads.

Infinity Alpha rear surrounds and in the background behind the recliner is my full marty with a 1200 watt rms 18" woofer and in the front between the 2 couches is a Marty micro cube with a 15" woofer at 800 watts Rms with an Inuke 6000dsp on the other side of the couch powering them both along with a smaller plate amp with bass shakers installed inside the frame of the couches.

And this is the 1080P Optoma projector.

It's no home theater but we love it.

I'd bet that projector works pretty well during the day with it's 2800 lumens of sunlight LOL.

OMG... I want to scream at God(s) right now, because the "X" lady says she "threw the subwoofer away" because she "had a leak in her home, and had to throw a lot of stuff out".

The Box was never opened! it was in the original plastic wrapping, with the Styrofoam around the subwoofer for shipping, with the box still sealed. I think she sold it.

She never bothered to ask me because she didn't find the need to ask me since it was a "gift", yet she never used it, and she knows nothing about subwoofers... Grrr

 That totally SUCKS!!!!
And the projector does rather well in the daytime. It is rated at 3200 lumens but I am sure that spec is bloated. The windows behind the seating have a full black out on them along with mirror tint on the glass itself. The light coming through the glass block wall is from our french doors and they have coverings I made that stick with magnets if it is really bright. I actually have it in eco mode and calibrated the brightness down a to -3 I believe so the projector is plenty bright in my house. The 3-d is awesome and this is coming from a 65" Panny plasma. I wouldn't go back to anything smaller. Some day if they make a 4K led/laser projector with half way decent specs under $5000, I may upgrade.

Are there any good speaker stands that lock or something? All the ones Ive been seeing, the speakers just sit on top. Im afraid to knock them over because my speakers are behind the couch, which also is where you'd walk to get to the deck. So people could be walking by them.

Also, just as a side note these speakers are huge. The "bookshelf" speakers Monitor40s or whatever are huge.

I know what you mean, my rear surrounds are on stands and one is right next to my front door. They have been bumped before but they have the channel in the back that hide the wires and that usually keeps them in place. The idea is to have your surrounds isolated. I am sure a "lock" would somewhat defeat that purpose. My stands have tiny sharp spikes to isolate even further like these...

What do you mean by isolated?

Would a tightening mechanism affect the sound? Like a rubber vice grip?

I'm less worried about the actual stand falling over, and someone just knocking the speaker. They weigh like 20lbs each and my floors are wood. If they drop, even from 2 feet up I feel like if they land on a corner it will either hurt the floor or break the speaker.

Edit: Id love to mount them on the wall but A: They are huge and B: there are no good places in my apartment to wall mount them. Either on the side or behind me.

Re: Surround Sound Home Theater Suggestions? 2016/09/26 08:39:01 (permalink)
If you put a speaker on top of an empty 50 gallon drum, that drum essentially becomes part of the speaker and it is going to sound very different. The idea of isolating a speaker is so that it is not inducing it's energy on to something else and thus preserving the sound the manufacturer intended. A stand is probably not going to really matter all that much and unless you are doing some critical audio work, you probably won't notice that much. I have never seen a locking mechanism but if they did have one or if you made one, you should be fine.
I think I had a friend that screwed their speakers onto the stand but they were junk speakers and were outside.

Seems kind of like a design flaw to not at least have raised edges on the stand. They wouldn't even have to touch the speaker. Just keep the base from sliding off if someone hit it.

I wish I could see the stands in person before buying one on Amazon. BestBuy doesn't have stands that fit the larger bookshelf speakers.

My couch is 35 inches tall. All the speaker stands I see though are like 24 inches. Do they make taller stands?

Almost leaning towards something like this, and just figuring out how where to put them. So I don't have to get stands.

Sanus makes pretty good speaker stands - here are some 31" ers here. https://www.amazon.com/BF31-B1-Speaker-Stands-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B00006JQ5O .  If you look in the description it says "Energy-absorbing MDF construction increases sound quality by providing acoustic isolation" - basically to echo what agent was saying about isolation.

That said - they do make stands like this that would probably accomplish what you're looking for: https://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-Adjustable-Satellite-Speaker-MS07B/dp/B000VRREPG/ .  Because they are rears and because of the type of sound that will be coming from them I would say the "isolation" issue would be less pronounced than say the fronts / center.

When all else fails - at least Amazon has a great return policy...
