It's been a while since I've built a PC but something seems off with my new Z170 Stinger. I've used ASUS motherboards in the past and just fired them up then loaded Windows. Thought I would try an EVGA beings I've had such great results with the GPU's. I plan on installing Win7 so in the Boot Menu I have the Win 7 Installation Enabled, Boot Mode set to UEFI and Boot Option #1 set to CD/DVD:UEFI: ATAPI and I have a 4TB drive set to that I just wiped clean MBR. When I try to load Windows From my DVD drive I get "windows failed to start a recent hardware change might be the cause" Status: 0xc0000185, Info: The boot selection failed required device is inaccessible. Can ya help me out?

Also, these tips may help you 1) Update your BIOS to the latest version 2) Load default Bios settings Save Reboot Load your edits and Turn Fast Boot OFF Set RAM to Auto with manual Voltage set to Mfg specs -- Or set RAM full manual ---- Do NOT use XMP at first 3) Are you using SSD ? set IDE to ACHI - In BIOS before you load the OS 4) Only install 1 HD when loading the OS. MS Windows will span files onto every drive it can find - if you ever remove one of these extra drives - Windows will fail to load (edit typo)

Thanks Cool GTX, I may have to run through the steps you showed me but UEFI isn't all that important, I just didn't realize that couldn't use it by default to install Win 7 so I swapped it to legacy and installed Windows. So my answer was "Install in legacy" Thanks for that! Now I want to install Win 10 on the second half of my 4TB drive. Can I shrink the 100MB System Reserve to a minimum to increase the 1678.02GB unallocated portion of the drive and format it for a second boot with reasonable ease?

I would leave the System or Recovery partitions alone as they don't take up much space anyway.

What is your end goal ? Dual Boot to either OS or upgrade to Win 10 ?

Dual boot, I want the other SATA ports available for a storage drive, an SSD for caching and another drive that will be set up the same as this drive with a dual boot of Win7 and 10 (basically clones that have all of my software installed the same because this is my travel machine as I am a CAD-smith who needs a redundantly dependable machine when I'm on the road)

Based on your need: Buy several SSDs 512 GB Samsung Pro - they are cheap - could use 256 GB Pro and save some $$ or even the 128GB for OS and software, using mechanical for "library files" & general storage I'd recommend one drive per OS, switch the drive On in BIOS when needed. SSD near indestructible and Fast As I've not yet built a dual boot Win 7 & 10 - I'd just google it
