Hai all

It has been a long time since I posted something new here, well not much has changed as the systems I build don't need much of any upgrades, but here some new pics of my setups and what hangs above them 21 StarWars Starfighters + 4 G.I.Joes all 25 units ranging from 1977 to 2007 And yeps this is also my bedroom, made it my ultimate man cave

Here some new pics of my current network at home

Thanks for sharing Gold Leader!  Pretty cool lab/mancave setup.  I'm hoping to finally set up a space like that in my home.  Being in the military keeps me from really investing in a space to set up in that fashion since I am always moving.  As soon as everything comes out of the box it's time again to pack it up it seems. I really like how you have kept all of your rigs over the years as well.  It's pretty cool to see them still running.

    Aww thanks man
Yeah well maintenance is just very important that keeps any computer alive and working
And trust me. keeping things clean and well cared of will really triple the lifespan of any system, Dust is a real killer and a heat collector, works like an incubator and that is really a not wanted thing with any type of computer even if it's from 1999 or from 2014 to this very day and beyond.

Well since yesterday I have been working with that Dual P3/EB 1Ghz and it's Legendary Matrox Parhelia AGP 268MB 256Bit DDR, and I got Reef Demo working and even today it looks awesome
The Parhelia 512 GPU uses HDM, which is short for High Displacement Mapping, this technology is the predecessor of Tessellation, which is widely used on today's GPU's from  AMD & NVIDIA

This card added Surround Gaming over 3 Monitors and 6 Monitors if a Parhelia PCI-X 256MB was added
This feature was named Surround Gaming
Kind of funny that NVIDIA calls it the same xD Yet Matrox had this back in 2002 with their Parhelia AGP 128MB to begin with
The Parhelia AGP 256MB, Parhelia PCI-X 256MB and Parhelia PCI-E 128MB were all released later in 2003.

    The following setups were possible:

    Parhelia AGP/PCI-E 128MB + Parhelia AGP/PCI-X 256MB does
    3x 1280x 1024 or 2x 1920 x 1200 in 2D & 3D with 16.8 Million & 1Billion Colors.

    Parhelia AGP 256MB + Parhelia PCI-X 256MB does:
    6x 1280x 1024 or 4x 1920 x 1200 in 2D & 3D with 16.8 Million & 1Billion Colors.
The Parhelia PCI-X 256 MB allowed the system to add the extra Monitors, this made the setup as fast as one card using 3 x 1280 x1024 & 2x 1920 x1200, only with double the monitors

The Parhelia PCI-X 256MB was connected to the Parhelia AGP 256MB via that white 9 pin connector top left:

Here some more pics of this Parhelia  AGP 256MB:

    Rear:

    Headshot:

    Top Angled:

    Rear Angled:

Here the system with the Parhelia in place after I exchanged the PSU as well, an Enermax EG365 VE

Here a closeup of the Matrox Parhelia AGP 256MB and the Voodoo5 5500 PCI 64MB:

Parhelia's also added Displacement Mapping which is a vital part of Tessellation, Parhelia's were also hybrid GPU's, Half DX 9.0a & Half DX 8.1
They have Vertex Shader 2.0 and Pixel Shader 1.3.

The Matrox Reef Demo showed this very well to it's true functions as the fish and Sharks went.

And there you go, the Fish look lifelike even today, the Parhelia 512 was released in 2002

    This is my first 2CPU system, I built it on January 28, 2000, back then it had a 3dfx Voodoo3 3500 TV AGP 16MB Rev.A 4999
It's 16 years and 8 months old and still going on strong, the Parhelia AGP 256MB replaced the 128MB Model that I bought in 2005, the Parhelia AGP 256MB DDR I bought in 2008 together with the 4x 512MB PC-133 ECC Reg which my dad got me :) Just to give this system a longer lifespan, as being my best retro system ever
The thing is, is that we need a 3rd player for gaming GPU's to give even more market competition & GPU competition, here by I still hope for Matrox making a comeback, only downside they don't make their own GPU's anymore they use AMD GCN GPU's instead, but this can always change once they would ever make this move, it is never too late to take part on such things, Matrox has been around since 1976, they are the oldest VGA card company still alive so GG for them there.

Later on this week I will test some more games with this unique VGA card, just to see what it can do, other just than it's own Reef Tech Demo, Stay Tuned for more

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Those old systems you build bring back a lot of great memories.

Many thanks for your kind comment rjohnson11

And yeaps they do indeed, it's the idea behind it renovate and preserve and keep them running that is my main goal anyways I mostly play retro games so a system like this Dual P3 does just fine.

Re: Here an Update of my systems and what hangs above them :) 2016/09/12 00:15:57 (permalink)
Here something interesting I also found, when it comes to GigaBit Color mode goes:

Parhelia's can do 1 Billion Colors display mode  alongside 16.8Million to which conventional cards can only do 16.7 Million colors  when it comes to all High True Color display modes 24 and 32 Bit.
Well that is what I got from it, Parhelia's can do GigaColor in2D and 3D, a feature other GPU's just can only dream of doing well at the time anyways all this does is boost image quality by a large margin, something Matrox was infamous for.

As Monitors go SVGA CRT's have better image quality than TN flat Panels although HS-IPS & S-PVA Panels  beat SVGA CRT's by a small margin when it comes to displaying true colors. I use two HP ZR24w HS-IPS 24" Flat Panels and a Compaq S710 17" SVGA CRT

The Parhelia can display 16.8 Million colors by default in 16, 24 and 32Bt Desktop and 3D modes  but it also can do that with 1 Billion colors mode aka GigaColor.
This all has nothing to do with 16 / 24 / 32 Bit Color desktop/game color modes.  GigaColor is a tech only the Parhelia has which Improves Image quality my a large margin yet little loss of performance.

"Display controller component supports 10-bit color frame buffer (called "Gigacolor") with 10-bit 400M Hz RAMDACs on 2 RGB ports and 230 MHz RAMDAC on TV encoder port, which was an improvement over its competitors. The frame buffer is in RGBA (10:10:10:2) format, and supports full gamma correction. Dual link TMDS is supported via external controller connected to the digital interface.
To further improve analog image quality, 5th order low-pass filters are used."

Normal graphics cards only support 8Bit color frame buffers. and they lack 5th order low pass filters.

This page also describes GigaColor at it's best:

With regard to 24-bit True Color display, the latest graphics cards limit themselves to 16,777,216 simultaneously displayed colors (256³). For each value of red, green and blue in the VGA signal, there are 8 bits per value available. A green tone can therefore be displayed in 256 different intensities. By comparison, Parhelia is capable of displaying each channel in 10-bit, which means that 1,073,741,824 colors can be displayed simultaneously - this is 64 times more than the standard cards. Matrox calls this mode "GigaColor".
Those who think that their own graphics card can do the same, merely because the Desktop menu shows that you can set the color depth to 32-bit as well as 24-bit, are gravely mistaken. The additional 8 bits are not used for color display, but can contain alpha information instead.

This feature is particularly useful for graphic designers. Thanks to a special Matrox plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, images with more than 8-bit per channel color information (for instance, from high-quality scanners or digital cameras) can be read with 10-bit per channel. Some games can also be displayed with better color depth already, and without loss in performance. In the future, the GigaGolor option should also be included directly in games. For this purpose, Parhelia allows 10-bit source textures to be processed.

    http://www.tomshardw...lia,465-10.html
I can't explain it better as I know myself but I know the difference and it's quite large to be honest

Here some test results I got so far btw of a game that was actually never properly tested witha Matrox Parhelia of any kind :)

After Testing Far Cry 1.33, the inside locations rendered fine but the outside locations were Light blue pre-rendered base textures, patch 1.4 only made things worse.
Here some screenshots I took when Iran the game @ 1024 x 768 x32 in High Details:

Inside locations look like this with patch 1.4:

Outside locations it's graphical rendering errors galore, only the skybox rendered fine:

    Underwater tends to be better:

Well sometimes this tends to happen, as the player's gun goes:

With FC 1.33 the inside locations rendered fine , but the outside locations were still messed up just as with 1.4.

The Drivers I am using are :

Matrox Power Desk 1.6.0.99, Which you can see here:

If there is a new driver, I am will to give that a go, any time.

    After reading this:
    https://support.ubi....o-Desktop-PC-FC

"If you have a Matrox Parhelia video card, make sure you have the latest drivers installed. You can get these drivers from http://www.matrox.com.

Set all the graphic options in the game to 'LOW'

Try editing the system.cfg file in the game directory (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Crytek\Far Cry) and change a few settings:

    e_overlay_geometry = "0"
    r_WaterReflections = "0"
    r_WaterRefractions = "0"

Try launching the game directly from the executable file (.exe) within the game folder instead of using the auto-run menu or game shortcut."

After installing the Parhelia 2006 drivers which is this version:

    Matrox Power Desk 1.12.0.110

Here the results with this driver with Far Cry 1.0, a fresh re-installation of the game was of need, because the Blue crap happened again lel

Inside the textures did seem fine, yet the water did look too blue for my doings.
    The resolution I used was 1024 x 768 x32 @ Very High Game settings.
This worked fine and gave the same exact effect as on the lowest settings, gameplay was decent and doable:

    **Update**

Currently testing the xp2k_113_00_158_hf_whql | March - 05 - 2007 Driver so far Far Cry 1.0 renders fine inside only outside it's like Marioland on Drugs
I will update as I progress, I am updating FC 1.0 to 1.3 see how that does.

Patch 1.3 gave the blue crap outside, but inside all was fine, after I left FC 1.3 the system auto rebooted. gg there lel
Hmm gonna see what Patch 1.33 & 1.4 does then.

1.4 is a dead on failure, everything is Blue again, the same with 1.33 btw.

    ***Update***

All drivers for Parhelia have been archived on my dropbox page, I have linked each and every driver version in the post just below this post with the correct and accurate namings.
This should prevent us Parhelia users looking for that one driver we need, we have a choice too now, always nice to have these hyper linked.
If I do find other drivers I will add them to my archive, if any of you have any other drivers that are not listed, feel free to post them so I can archive those as well  8)

    And there you go

This post from Tweakstone was also helpful:
Neues Matrox Parhelia System / IDE Probleme / Asus A7V333 Rev 2.0
Yet he has used drivers I have not found as of yet, so I will keep looking for those as well.

The Parhelia AGP x8 256MB is from 2003, as where the 128MB AGP x4 Universal is from 2002.
Between the two is about one year in difference, main differences is the AGP x8 support of the 128MB Model and the double sized VRAM buffer and a new Revision of the P512 GPU.

It should not really matter what Parhelia you have driver wise, so yeah I am really willing to try that Driver out you two tested and used
If either of you have this driver would it be possible for me to give them a go?
Just upload them to dropbox or any other service you guys have, if that is okay hehe

As Parhelia AGP 256MB's go they do pop up on ebay every now and then, they are not cheap but then again, they are worth having, well imo anyways
My new goal is to collect all the different Parhelia VGA cards They deserve more luv'n imo

Here are the other Parhelia PCI-X card models and also more about that 9 pinned white Connector to connect to a AMG x8 model to a PCI-X version of the card to allows 4x 1920x 1200 & 6x 1280x 1024

So here is where I found out:

Joined graphics card mode enables an additional Matrox DualHead** or TripleHead† graphics solution to work in tandem in one system to drive up to four displays
    http://www.matrox.co...lia/parhelia256

And I think this has to do with it:
    Optional upgrades

    * Matrox ASM (Advanced Synchronization Module) for synchronization with video input or other Matrox graphics cards

These are the cards you can use the ASM method to connect with:

Matrox QID Pro [A Parhelia PCI-X 256MB variant]
    http://www.matrox.co..._series/qidpro/

    Matrox Parhelia DL256
    http://www.matrox.co...rheliadl256pci/

    Matrox Parhelia HR256
    http://www.matrox.co.../parheliahr256/

    Matrox Parhelia Precision SDT
    http://www.matrox.co...iaprecisionsdt/

And last but not least, these two

    Matrox Parhelia PCI 256MB
    http://www.matrox.co.../?productTabs=1

    Matrox Parhelia Precision SGT
    http://www.matrox.co...iaprecisionsgt/

These cards do have this as hintful info as well

As extra info this does explain the multi card support:

    Supported multi-card configurations

    * Parhelia Precision SDT
    * Parhelia Precision SDT + Parhelia PCI 256MB
    * Parhelia Precision SDT + Parhelia DL256 PCI
    * Parhelia Precision SDT + Parhelia 256MB (AGP)

    Optional upgrades

    * Matrox ASM (Advanced Synchronization Module) for synchronization with video input or other Matrox graphics cards

    Stay tuned for more

This is a lot of fun though, it's like exploring the lesser known things of what this card can actually do, as I did with many of my 3dfx Voodoo5 Engineering Samples back in the day I had those.
I kind of missed doing this and now doing this again brings me back to that place I actually miss a lot, so expect a lot more coming from me
Plenty of games to test still, I'll also update that archive if anything else comes by

Hey nice, well I hope it was a nice read as well, I don't really measure the FPS it's more to see what the Parhelia can do render wise, still trying to figure out why Far Cry doesn't render normally since it does work fine with a Geforce4 Ti-4600 also a DX 8.1 GPU it uses the infamous NV25 GPU, the Parhelia is Fully DX 8.1 Pixel Shader 1.4 & Vertex Shader 1.4 support and half DX 9.0a as Vertex Shader 2.0 goes.
So Yeah I would of expected the water to be rendered just fine, but it seems Matrox never made full support for Cry Engine with their driver packages for the Parhelia, so I guess that kind of caused my little setback there.

Finding out such things is fun, it's just very time consuming, as for driver issues had tons of those, it's all part of the package really

Yaaaas, just doing them oldies a bit more though
Still got all my Dual Opterons, but no real new stuff yet,  just been more in to renovating my retro builds a bit more and seeing what they are capable of doing etc :)
This Matrox Parhelia AGP 256MB DDR was a lot of fun testing it out, it still can do a lot of games, hence being the final Matrox gaming card, these are a rare appearance these days.

Good to see ya around bud   Sorry for no new upgrades yet, just not ready for that yet, the GTX 480's are doing a fine job for todays things, that for 7 year old relics, Iam pretty impressed on how the GTX 480 handles things

    Hey thanks man!

Well I have something new coming my way and finally I can replace my 7 year old EVGA GeForce GTX 480 PCI-E 1.5GB 385Bit GDDR5 Rev.A3 2010 with one of these:

    EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 Elite Red Edition iCX PCI-E 11GB 352Bit GDDR5X Rev.A1 xx17
    https://eu.evga.com/produ...aspx?pn=11G-P4-6796-KR
    More detailed tech specs here:
    https://www.techpowerup.c...tw3-elite-w-icx-cooler

I choose the Red Edition,as tribute to my EVGA GeForce GTX 295 Red Editions from 2009

More pics will be coming and a new topic since this is something new from my end, just a little preview here so you guys know something new is finally coming from my end as well

Still gotta find out what it's PCB Date is, I am sure it was made somewhere around Week 12 a 20 of 2017, as being EVGA's brand new iCX model.
Also it has the NVIDIA GP102-300-K1-A1 GPGPU sporting 3584 Pascal CUDA Cores a whopping 1024 more than the GTX 1080.
So life span wise this is just the smarter move and the real deal for my situation.

So yeah finally a new GeForce from my end I really look forward to testing this GP102-350-K1-A1 GPGPU and see how well it does with my 24 core Server/Workstation.
especially with Vulkan API & BarsWF CUDA x64, I really want to get the max out of my system, also why I choose GP102-350-K1-A1 over GP104-400-A1.

And by having the ability to do that with EVGA's best GTX 1080 Ti makes me super excited, so I can't wait to try this monster thing out.

Also I will make a Maintenance Guide topic on how to clean these cards.
It seems it has a lot of screws so I will put extra detail in that to avoid mix ups etc.
