So i just installed my GTX 1080 FTW, deleted all previous version of Precision X and all folders.  Then installed Precision XOC for the GTX 1080 FTW. When i loaded up World of Warcraft, i noticed while the game was at full screen, there was a buzzing coming from my case. When i minimize the game, the buzzing goes away. So i looked at my temps and they were up around 63c, but noticed that the GPU clock speed went up to 2025Mhz and the memory clock speed went up to 5005Mhz. Correct me if i am wrong here, but these seem to be way past the specs of this card. I did NOT fiddle with any overclocking or voltages. I just installed the card and started playing. I have attached a screen shot. Do not mind the temps being so low, it is because i just rebooted and let it sit before running World of Warcraft.

    Dear Fearsyn,

Hi, and welcome back to the forums.

Yes, I can confirm that this is normal as the card can boost higher than the lowest advertised boost level to give you the best performance possible without adjustment.  The memory clock is only 10 Mhz over stock so that is also completely normal.

The buzzing is likely a little bit of coil whine and you maybe able to change this by enabling the Vsync option in your game.  It will not cause any stability issues or damage, as it is just a component vibrating when under load.

I have GTX 980's and they do not make this noise. This is unacceptable if this is what EVGA considers normal. I will RMA this because i shouldn't have to enable V-sync in order for a noise to go away.

You certainly can RMA the card, but be aware that a power supply that doesn't have good DC ripple suppression could be inducing coil whine in the GPU.

I love it. Most people complain that their cards don't run fast enough. This guy's FTW is running too fast!

As for the coil whine, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe my 47-year old ears just aren't sensitive enough, or maybe my computer cases have all just covered it up this whole time, but I've never actually heard coil whine except on some Youtube videos of guys putting microphones right up to it. Good luck with it, though.

Unfortunately coil whine/buzzing has become a much bigger problem since the 900 series. A lot of cards have it. And yes, it is considered as "normal"... :(

I really think it has to do with the size of the die being smaller and all, and being more sensitive to the electric current from the PSU, and that is why people have said that it might require a newer PSU (as in brand new) in order to get rid of the coil whine.

Coil whine/buzzing comes from the coils changing the load/frequency often and fast. Since the 900 series the cards have crazy power management and can change the power state multiple times within seconds.
Power supplies can influence that, but even with excelletn PSUs you still have a high risk to have CW.

Well... My GTX 1070 is the quietest card since GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128MB AGP8x. In terms of fan noise and coil whine. I had to return my first GTX 970 because it had so much coil whine, though, Gigabyte GTX 780 GHz Edition that I had had the worst coil whine I've ever heard.

That is why I said "most cards".
There are still cards that have no or just little CW.
I had 5 different GTX 970 cards from 3 different brands. All had coil whine.
    GTX 1080 FE, CW...

I have had the opportunity to listen to several NVIDIA cards from different NVIDIA partners like Gigabyte and ASUS as well as EVGA. All of them to some degree have coil whine. The amount of coil whine can be slightly reduced if you have a well regulated power supply and you also have stable voltage with low ripple from your household power outlet.

When current is passed through these components they vibrate, this vibration is what causes the whine or buzzing sounds.

As mentioned above, without a clean power source this can definitely be effected. You will see by the picture below how these components smooth out the signal and prevent power irregularity. This causes a vibration frequency. I also recommend testing without a UPS (battery backup) if you are using one.

Your hitting 2025 boost at stock?
Whoa, I would seriously consider holding on to that card for a bit and see if the whine does not get better.
You have a very good chip on that card.

My question is, if it's so universal now, why don't the manufacturers just put some sort of dampener on the vibrating components?

It could probably be something as simple as a dab of something like a silicone caulking. Has anyone tried this?

They already do.  They have for a long time.  There are some that actually have concrete in them.  The problem is that they still vibrate loose on occasion even with the high end components.

So what you're saying is that because i am getting the stock boost clock to hit 2025 without tampering with any clock speeds that this is a well built chip and is outperforming other cards of the same chipset? By the way, i have 2 of these now in SLi. The one card gets to about 72c while playing the witcher 3 maxed out settings at 4K resolution.

Yes, that is how GPU Boost 3.0 works. In a nutshell, it detects what the GPU is capable of according to load, clockspeed, power and temperature. It then adjust accordingly. Higher native clockspeed indicates a great chip. 72C isn't bad at all at full load. If I were you; I'd wait for the Hybrid cooler to be released and slap those on there. Nice and quiet with great temps. You may even see 2200mhz on the one hitting 2025mhz. YMMV

What boost clocks are you seeing on the other one?

Yes indeed you got some good silicon on that chip, certainly I would consider it the upper end of the spectrum.

Wow. If you dialed in no extra clocks and you're getting that, I know a lot of folks who would love to catch you carrying them through a dark alley. Most of us have to dial in some OC to hit 2025. My SC runs nicely at 2025 with something like +100 dialed in.

Consider the game he's playing too......with higher frame rates comes more coil whine.  Just the way it is....

I guess I didn't realize that those clocks were that rare.  The one I currently have boosts to 2031 right out of the box.

My 1080 SC started at 1987mhz at 45 C (not running a game, just idling with the K button pushed to keep it running 100%). As the temperature reached 50 C it dropped to 1974, and at 54 C it dropped again to 1961. I don't recall what the FTW is guaranteed to hit compared to the SC, but yes, those numbers are quite nice.

edit: running Heaven for a while, the temperature peaked around 71/72 C and the gpu ran at 1923 Mhz, with occasional dips to 1898. If the OP is keeping 2025Mhz unOCed while running something, that's pretty darn awesome

Consider the game he's playing too......with higher frame rates comes more coil whine.  Just the way it is....

I guess I didn't realize that those clocks were that rare.  The one I currently have boosts to 2031 right out of the box.

Actually, i reseated the Video card and then added the 2nd GTX 1080 FTW and no more coil whine. But yea i guess these are damn good numbers for stock. I will be keeping them now lol. I was very ignorant to the concept and thought something was wrong

Wow. If you dialed in no extra clocks and you're getting that, I know a lot of folks who would love to catch you carrying them through a dark alley. Most of us have to dial in some OC to hit 2025. My SC runs nicely at 2025 with something like +100 dialed in.

You can see in the screen shots that no offset parameters have been used. These are running at complete stock.
