OK, I expected that. It's only theoretical side project. Trying to utilize hateful Asus Rampage 3 Formula for this. Unfortunately with everything nearly completed - ready to install system on brand new SSDs, my 71605 decided to take a dump and it crapped out (worked perfectly last week when removed old data). Sometimes I really want to hurt myself... Waiting now for new card (8805), and just was toying with idea of using new X99 board instead really old spiteful rubbish. One of the most hateful features of mentioned R3F is that if you just unplug power (no system so you can't shutdown anything in controlled fashion) it always resets the BIOS to defaults - how retarded is that? Second "feature" is that OC won't work if you have any power saving options activated - to quote Sheila Broflovski - What! What! WHAT! It's dumbest board I ever came across. But I got it brand new and very cheap to replace EVGA SLI3 when no other X58 boards were available.
There was one guy on eBay who was selling X58 Classy 3 but he added so much useless junk to it that I decided against purchase. I still have half-dead (I/O ports are shot by thunderstorm, but all slots working) X58 SLI3. It was without a question most stable board I ever owned.
Most stable board and best for overclocking for me was Z77 FTW, I would sign always before shopping and upgrade if someone could give me warranty that board and CPU will work like that. Nothing more, I don't care for memory, USB, SATA... Only CPU Core and CPU Core Voltage, nothing else. And processor was nice and she survived such torture Prime95, LinX and OCCT stress test before stability. 4.5GHz for 3770K was like stock stock clock, he didn't felt nothing with 1200V. 3.5 years I didn't drop processor on adaptive voltage or lower clock, 3.5 Years 100% power. But because he worked stable on 4.8GHz and on that clock pass all stress test and I kept him on 4.5GHz I didn't allow degradation and now need same voltage as first day.
On such speed he worked as i7-4790K on stock speed. It's bad because EVGA didn't launched X99 FTW-K on start, because price and everything what offer I would think about that board. I could love some ultra expensive boards, but it's different when you need to pay 600$, in my country most expensive boards cost 640-650 euro for X99. Godlike, RVE USB 3.1 cost 120 euro more than normal. When you pay so much you can't enjoy even if everything work perfectly when you payed two high end boards for one. For me is 400 euro top for board and only for extreme.
For normal platform 250-350 euro. And 99% premium expensive boards have terrible customer experience on Newegg.
Today with motherboards is really risk. Nothing is any more warranty for quality special not price and class.
With Z77 platform I felt literary if I change board that I will not reach that speed any more. That's probably not true because stress was really intensive but I had such experience. OK my CPU was not Golden Sample but he was among 20-30% better models with 70-80% samples with lower quality but I had such experience that if I change something he will not reach that speed even if I could bet that no one tested Haswell or later processors with such strong intensive tests.
Best feeling is when you find board for 250-300e for new platform,
as I found CPU for 270-280 not 420 euro and she work as double more expensive boards.
But I think soon motherboards will be more and more expensive, Z170 platform prove that and I think that will continue, special if Intel launch 6 Core CPU for mainstream, Coffee Lake... With Z170 premium boards price jump for 100$, lower class not so much but for 30-40$.
