Can both of you try it in the top slot and see if you have the same speed issues, also make sure the PCIE is set to Gen3 manually in BIOS as well?
That is the only Gen3 slot that is not run by a PLX chip, I am thinking this might be a issue form that.  Either way that will be more information I can send to the engineers.

OK The Good news is I took your advice and put it in the top slot and so far it looks like the speeds have increased.  Not all are at spec but it is MUCH better.  The Bad side is Although I have the very same data on this drive as the 850 pro that was demoted to a Games drive to make room for it.. my BOOT times are as slow as a Standard HDD Often taking a full minute...  I know my board is not the right one to get MAX out of this drive but I spent the cash for even more impressive boots and this is a huge step backwards...

SO now I have M.2 in slot  1 @ 4X  and I didn't have to force 3.0 , it is set up in the bios already

GPU in Slot 2 and it tests at pcie 3.0  x 16 at load.

This build is only a year old... not excited about having to buy new CPU , 32 gigs of NEW Ram and a new MOBO so soon to get to use this M.2 to its max.  I should have done more research before I bought it...  Was WAY more impressed with the 850 pro as my OS Drive.

4Hi,
Today I received a 4xPCI-e adapter for Samsung 950Pro 256MB NVMe. After 3 tests, I cannot go over 2k GB.
Z97 Classified (1.08 BIOS), Intel 4330+HD Graphics 4600, 2x4GB DDR3 Viper 1866MHz, Win7/64bit on Kingston V300/128GB SSD, Intel 7650AC wifi on M.2/m-SATA port, Corsair VX450PSU, EVGA Supercooler.
Can be a cpu or memory issue? Or wifi adapter?
I think BIOS cannot affect the performance, the SSD is not installed for booting.
1- PE1 - 950Pro; PE2 - empty; PE3 - empty ; PE4 - empty ; PE5 - empty ; PE6 - empty (after optimisation)
2- PE1 - empty; PE2 - empty; PE3 - empty ; PE4 - empty ; PE5 - empty ; PE6 - 950Pro (after optimisation)
3- PE1 - empty; PE2 - empty; PE3 - empty ; PE4 - empty ; PE5 - empty ; PE6 - 950Pro (before optimisation)
Solutions?

LE: When I changed the SSD to the first slot, the PCI-e settings was on Auto, so I manually set Gen.3 PCI-e. Now I have an improved result.

The secret update is secret, can't tell ya

It is an updated firmware for the lane replication chip (PLX).  As far as more specific details, I am not sure, most likely to address throughput issues for non video devices.

@bschimp
Please contact me so I can send you the fix to see if it resolves the issue for you.

Hello fellow EVGA Fans!

cdc - yes, there was a (transparent to me) install of the driver by Windows 10.  In my trouble shooting, I had tried to update the Driver through the Device Manager which informed me I already had the up to date driver.  I also installed Samsung's NVM Express Driver 1.1 which did not change anything nor reflect a updated driver was installed.  I believe that that driver may be for Windows 7/8.  For me, I did not have any install problems but rather performance problems.

Dave - I sent you an email this past Saturday but alternatively, you can reach me at: abn1sgret@gmail.com

Thank you.

Dave,

Ok, I did get the firmware file, thanks.

When I attempted to run the batch file, I received the error message attached.  I then ran it as Administrator and a DOS box flashed for about 1/4 second.  I then installed the M.2 back in PE3 and I am getting the same Link Speed 2.5 Gbps out of 10 Gbps and only 836 Mbps Read speeds so I am unsure if the firmware was updated.  Before I pull video cards again, I wanted to send you this update.  Perhaps the M.2 needs to be in a specific PCIe slot?  Please advise.

Has anyone installed this firmware update and if so, what are your results?

Thank you.

It does not sound like the change applied.  So far I have gotten favorable results.
Please be logged in with an account that has administrative rights, and run update.bat from the zip file I sent you.  It should work in a 64bit environment just fine.

Dave,

No joy here.  I am getting the same exact results as in post #40.  I am logged into my own computer - 1 user and not connected to a network.

The dates of the files in the PLX zip are 2013, 14 and 15.  This is the correct PLX zip?

Perhaps Nick was able to install the update.

At any rate, this is where I am currently at.

Thank you.

Hmmmm.  Did the update appear to work this time?  Or did it just hang for a couple seconds again?
Can you let me know that, and I will pass it onto the engineers, as from your first reply on the update, it didn't sound like the update applied.  Let me know and I will pass it onto engineering either way.

Does it involve m.2 issues Dave? As I plan to get an m.2 driver soon such as the Samsung 950 or Intel 750 Pcie nvme ssd

If so wouldn't it be great for you guys to release it publicly ?

@bschimp
question, did you have slot 2 or below populated when you did the firmware update?  If you do not have a card in PCIE2/3/4/6 the PLX will not initialize and as such will not flash.
If you did, do you have a thumb drive you could make a DOS boot off of and flash in DOS mode, per the engineer it should work in Windows but they tested there on DOS.

If you are still getting an error, can you email me the pic if it is different than the one above as the engineer I am working with would like to see any additional errors.

@cdc951
It is a an update to the PLX firmware, to help it run at the correct speed when a SSD is plugged in.  Due to this fix taking a little bit of know how, and obviously there is some potential issues when done in the OS, I am talking with the engineering team about the possibility of integrating this into a different update, such as BIOS if possible.  First thing is getting the people who are having issues up and running correctly.  Also, we need to see if this issue persists on the Z170 Classified also, and if it is fixing that as well, which we are working on too.

Ok, Mr. DaveB, the firmware improves some functions, the drivers helps to be used.
Please, have you a horizon to solve the issues with the firmware and a friendly solution to install?
Is it the right of all users to upgrade the firmware in the terms of compatibility or performance.
I have need this firmware and/or the new drivers for a new windows clean installation.
Thank you.

I am currently trying to come up with a way to install this that is more user friendly.  As it is obvious by the replies so far that Windows can really cause problems with the update.

Are you trying to install a M.2 drive through PCIE?  And you are doing this on a Classified board, if so, it will work, but not at full speed without the update.  If you run the SSD in the top slot, you will see much better speed than the lower slots.

also what did you mean by much better speeds? Is it not going to be running full speeds?

Re: Z97 Classified and Samsung 950 Pro M.2 2016/04/29 10:38:06 (permalink)
The slots running on the PLX are not delivering the M.2 speed they should.  Video cards run great, which was the focus when these boards were released, I was not aware of any mainstream M.2 drives then, so PCI-E to M.2 adapters were never tested.  Something in the PLX Firmware is not transferring data at the speeds it should be for on these adapters, so we got a firmware update for them which fixes it.  However sometimes Windows can cause issues with applying the patch.  Currently the DOS prompt is the only way to apply it, but we are looking into some other means of getting this to work.  Unfortunately, the BIOS team has more boards on their plate than this atm, but I am staying on top of it with them, no ETA, but I am hoping for a fix that applies across the board.

Hi all - I know I'm a little late to the game here, but I just spent all weekend twiddling with a 512GB Samsung 950 Pro with a PCIe x4 adapter in my EVGA Z97 Classified.

Long story short - I *finally* got spec speeds from the 950.  The trick for me was forcing the PCIe slot (I used slot 6) to Gen3 in the BIOS.  That was the only way I could get the speeds up.  Like everyone else, I was seeing ~800MB/s prior to that.  Once I forced the slot to Gen3, everything was perfect.

The only thing I don't love is that adding the 950 (via the M.2 adapter card) brought my GTX 1070 down to 8 lanes... I'm filing this under "oh well" for now as x8 vs x16 benchmark differences seem to be negligible.
