Not sure if you made your decision or purchase yet but these popped up for the shellshocker today on Newegg.

I haven't heard them personally but for that size of tower speaker and those specs and with all the great reviews, I would jump on it. I almost want to buy them just to hear them.

I saw these pop up too and would love to get a set myself...  But I'm sure the wife would not be too happy!

Also those Omnimount stands should be fine.  They look similar to my Sanus BF31 stands except the Omni's have 2 height options.

I have these, they are great and any amp from 45w to 200w will power them just the same.
Loads of sound.
Best entry level speaker in my book.

I have these for rears, they would do just fine as fronts too.

Not really but they come and go all the time. Newegg used to be super cool with price matching and even gave me a refund a few times when the price went back up or when I found it cheaper after I ordered but I don't think they do anything like that anymore.

They re-started their price matching policy to 14 days (http://promotions.newegg.com/nepro/16-2624/index.html) but ONLY on items that say price match guarantee.  Guess they were missing too much business from people going to BB and price matching Amazon...  Looks like the monitor 60 fronts are still on sale for $120 which is good.  Unfortunately the Klipsch sub went back up in price though.

EDIT: This sub is is on sale, made by Klipsch, and has plenty of power.  JAMOs are pretty highly talked about on AVS as a budget sub. http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?item=N82E16886427002

If shipping wasn't so much, I would build you a subwoofer for the cost of materials, labor free that would make those Klipsh/polk/sony/ bestbuy shoe boxes look and sound like a joke.

For me best speakers... and I like them and think about them last several months are Pioneer 5.1 system from their site.
They have much more expensive option to customers buy separate, than cost around 2500$, but 5.1 system worth 550$ is for me great for Plasma TV, movies, music and gaming. Off course speakers are for living room and for people who don't want to spend fortune on system.
OK, they are not cheap, with receiver VSX-1131 7x160W with all newest features for 550$ is together around 1100$.
For me no better option than that for 1000-1500$ range, I mean and speakers and receivers.
Most of receivers are 5x100, 7x80, 7x100W and go up to 700-800$. This is new series 2016, 3-4 models are launched and VSX-1131 is strongest,
7.2 x160W give you option for different systems later if you change something.
Even with 2000$ in pocket for sound I would bought them, I would not even look further, because they are very strong and really no need more special for people who live in apartments. Technics and Pioneer are my favorite marks of Hi-Fi. I liked Technics even more before 15-20 years.

Lol I don't think he wants to get kicked out of his apartment - which his current anticipated build could easily do anyway!!   I 110% agree - it's no different than car audio...  If you have the means to build your own enclosure to the specs of your chosen driver the SPL and SQ are exponentially better than anything pre-fab.  I can't count the number of enclosures I have built over the years.  I considered building my own for the house but don't have the time or space for it right now.  Plus by the time I bought something to power it the cost wasn't worth it.  Now if I ever buy a house where I can have a more dedicated theater room it will be higher up on the priority list.    At this point the OP is probably like - how the hell did I let them talk me out of that HTIB??? LMAO

The wife and I actually demoed those AJ Pioneer speakers next to my current Polks and there was no comparison.  Problem here in my opinion is that you're comparing completely different classes of speakers.  The Pioneer speakers at $550 (MSRP) do beat out other comparatively priced speakers - I will give you that.  Problem here is that they don't often go on a big sale.  The SP-FS52 list for $130/ea and the Polk monitor series 60 towers list for $300/ea.  So basically you're going up a tier or two for the exact same price - it's like getting a Chevy Malibu for the same price of a Sonic.  Once that AJ set hits $300 then it's a deal.  And as far as their receivers go - I have never been impressed with any of their non "Elite" receivers.  Besides now Onkyo owns Pioneer's home division anyway...

Re: Surround Sound Home Theater Suggestions? 2016/07/27 07:19:55 (permalink)
The only receivers I have ever returned were a JVC and a Pioneer. Heck, I would even take a Sony over the ones I have heard but, each person is different and sometimes you get a lemon. In all honesty, if you are not a picky audio nut, any semi-name brand 5.1 system even going with a HTIB is going to sound alright. A lot of people get used to what they hear and what they see and there are quite a few tricks audio and video companies can use to make things seem better than they actually are. Heck, Bose made a grip of money doing just that and most consumers have no idea. At the end of the day, if it sounds and looks good to you, be happy.

I would love to get a new set up without spending half the time wondering if I see pixel problems or feeling the urge to test the manufactures claims of wattage in a speaker or having my wife scowl while I have tripods/microphones on the couch doing test tones trying to find problem areas. My wife has had to remind me multiple times that "this is a living room, not a home theater"

When living in a small space, whats the difference?

My speaker set up will shake the entire place Im sure. But I rent a condo. The units around me are other apartments/condos. I might get kicked out, but I doubt it. lol.

Again, I just want the sale to last until Friday. Otherwise I would have to wait for another sale and I already have my heart set on those speakers.

Between the two, the Polk, by far. I always Lul when I see the name "Jamo" I think of a plain brown box with the name "Beerz" with some generic Pabst Blue ribbon knock off beers inside. Or one of those cheap plastic Bluetooth speakers with a Toonez" or "tunez" sticker on the side. The specs and the rep of the Polk is better.

Compared to this Klipsch...
http://www.frys.com/product/8231666?site=204premail071716

I would still go with the Polk. Better specs. Not always the case but when you are talking subs in the same ball park, the bigger the speaker "generally" the better. The Polk has a lower frequency response, can handle more power and they are usually pretty efficient subs for the price.

I agree especially at the price point that Polk 505 is your best bet.  As agent said - more power, better frequency response, and will more than likely be louder because it's ported.  The PSW505 is also much better than the other Polk subs available and pretty highly rated.  It's also available on Amazon for the same price w/ Prime.

Ordered everything from newegg. It will arrive sometime next week when Ill be able to update with some pictures. Thanks for all of the suggestions! I think I got a pretty nice introductory system. Especially with everything nearing 50-60% off.

My current TV stand shelves are too small for the Receiver so I put the receiver on top where the center speaker was going to go. Im thinking about mounting the center speaker above the TV instead. Will it sound any different above or below the TV?

It shouldn't make a huge difference.  I have mine mounted above the TV and have it angled down just slightly...  Used some shelving pieces to make a shelf that mounts to the VESA wall mounts on the back since my TV is on a stand.  Just make sure to run the speaker calibration / mic in the receiver when you get everything.  It will attempt to help compensate for any mis-placements.  Use that as a starting point and then use your own ears to tweak it to YOUR liking - as that is the most important factor!   http://www.crutchfield.com/S-Jd71widxQ4k/learn/learningcenter/home/speaker_placement.html

General rule of thumb is have your center at hear height (when seated) or at least aimed at ear height. You should be fine.

Floorstanding speakers came in today. They have 4 connectors on the back of them. What is that for? Do I connect all 4 or are the bottom two just for like..daisy chaining other speakers?

Set them up. Kept the little connector plugged in. The one that connects the 4. Speakers feel a little quiet. I can turn the volume up, but its like 50-70 is normal and anything below is useless.

Is it 2 sets of Black and red posts/terminals? Usually the other set is for Bi-amping. I never bother because most of the time, the channels power from the receiver is more than adequate for what the speaker needs.

I don't think the connectors will matter if they are the ones I am thinking. Each receiver is a little different as far as volume goes. Just adjust it to what sounds good to you.

Don't remove the metal connectors.  Bi-amping allows you to power the woofers and tweeters separately.  If you remove the metal connectors they won't work properly.

Did you go through and make any custom labels or adjustments to inputs?  I'd maybe suggest doing a factory reset on the receiver now that you've connected speakers to it if you don't have a bunch of custom settings.

Also what listening mode are you in?  If you've only got fronts connected you need to be in "Stereo" mode.  And in the "Advanced" menu the speaker config needs to be at 2.1ch (it defaults to 7.1).  You can also set the tower speakers (fronts) to "Full Band" in the crossover settings. http://www.onkyo.com/manual/txnr545/adv/en/028.html

Lastly on most of the Onkyo's I have used - the starting area for sound on the volume control is 30-35.  As agent8 said each MFR does their volume control differently - biggest thing to realize is that number isn't a percentage.  My Denon starts out making sound around 15 or so - just for comparison.

That should get you some more sound - and keep in mind as a fellow Onkyo owner that the volume numbers won't seem "normal".  I run in the 50s under normal TV viewing conditions and often higher on movies.  Completely normal man!
