Hi,

I'm building a new rig and I wanted your opinion.  My budget is around $4,000.  The rig is for gaming/video creation and music creation.  If there's anything I can replace to save money let me know.  Thus far, this is priced around $3,500.  I can push for another video card for SLI.

Current system:

  • i7 4770k

  • 16gb memory Vengeance LP

  • GeForce GTX 780

New system:

  • Intel Core i7-5960X 3.0GHz 8-Core Processor

  • Asus X99-DELUXE ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard

  • EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti HYBRID GAMING<----------Maybe 2x SLI

  • Corsair Air 540 ATX Mid Tower Case

  • Corsair SP140 LED Fans

  • Corsair 1000W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

  • LED Lighting

  • Corsair H100i GTX 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler

  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB RAM Kit

I didn't look at the EVGA 1000W PSU.  What would be the difference?  I love EVGA, never ever had problems with the motherboards.  If I decided to go with a motherboard from EVGA I'll go with the x99 classified.

If it was me, i would stick with the GTX 780 until Nvidia releases it's new GPU later this year. The lastest High Bandwidth Memory will be on the new flagship graphics cards.

The GTX 780 have been good to me.  I have a feeling the new GPU will run well over $1,000 out the gate.  Computer parts keep getting more expensive as technology evolves.  So much to get with this system.  Investing in Oculus Rift as well for VR.  That's another $600.  SMH!

I need to change my signature it's wrong.  This current system ran really well for me.  Lately I've been getting black screen and games locking up my computer.  I think I narrowed it down to a faulty memory chip.  Other than that, great system.  It's time for a massive upgrade.

How do I not piss money against a wall?  What should I replace to lower the money?  It seems the good tech is always expensive.  All my life I've always purchased products that were old because of money.  Went from a 295 card when there was better.  Chose the 780 because it was cheaper than the high end.  Everything I always get seems to not last long because it's outdated and cheap.  In the world of technology, if it's not high end, don't expect your rig to last long.  Thus far this system is running well for me and it's been about two years.  Maybe another year it will go down the crap hole.  I want to enjoy games at high end.  Tired of dubbing down my settings because of my tech.

I'd never go over a $1,500 budget now days for a computer, but that's just me. The returns in performance for price paid are just too insignificant. You could just use the massive savings to upgrade as needed to hardware that performs vastly better for cheaper down the road.

    It's your money though.

Just a heads up on the asus board. Think carefully about how much you value support. I have been trying for 2 weeks just to post on their forum. Cant seem to get permission. Emailed webmaster and admin and still no reply. My board is working OK but I had a few questions about it and cant even post a thread to ask. I tried to save a few bucks but good support is priceless. Buying the EVGA Dark x99 if it comes out.

Looking at what you have, if you OC your CPU, you should still be okay in that department. I would upgrade the GPU to 980ti (SLI if you want), PSU, and RMA the RAM. 64GB of RAM is a waste unless you run about 10 programs and 50 tabs on your browser at all times. A word on SLI - personally I will not do SLI as it appears to be games are buggier than ever with SLI support.

Yep, id NEVER upgrade to that setup from your current setup.

I personally would get the best single card GPU for gaming, get some faster ram and a really fast SSD. 8 core cpu is not ideal for gaming and would be a waste, SLI has been a complete and utter joke for the past few years and W10 was suppose to bring DX12 with pooling, doesnt work as intended. Its really not a good time to upgrade.

I'd drop down to 32gb of memory, which should save you quite few coins.  I see where folks go with a 4x XX set of memory, so that if they want to upgrade, say in your case to 64gb in the future, you can add a second set of 4x 8gb. sticks.  I will never do anything less than 16gb as I like having tons of apps and up to 20 or more tabs and 2 different web browser opened at the same time, all this while gaming.  Currently I have 32gb.

I'd also caution you about Asus' MB, too, as posted above.  Customer service rules in my book and I'd pay few more coins if necessary for it.

With that budget, I would of just recommended a pair of GTX 980Ti's and maybe a faster set of RAM.
